Document 3

The document discusses an innovative humanities MOOC. It describes how students can study and submit projects for a MOOC online at any time. The "Visualizing Cultures" course originally had 3,000 enrolled students when offered traditionally, with 1,172 completing it. The professors changed it to a MOOC format to improve the course, which increased student enrollment numbers over time. It took multiple professors to manage the increased student numbers in the MOOC version of the course. The document argues that the Philippines should implement MOOCs in the future, as it would allow continued learning and knowledge sharing while limiting in-person interactions during the pandemic.

“Innovative Humanities MOOC”

1. When and where can a student who has enrolled in an MOOC study and submit projects
or answers?
MOOC is a convenient alternative for a face–to-face discussion, as it also shares
the same amount of knowledge that we are able to get from the traditional one. A MOOC
usually consist of features that can help us in navigating it and options that we can use. The
students would not have a hard time submitting their projects and task because it can easily be
seen directly from the website. As it was internet based, the website has been programmed to
have a feature to where the students can submit their certain task and activities. It would also
have an indicator to until when you are able to make submissions and if it is on time or
overdue.

2. Describe “Visualizing Cultures” as a traditional subject. How many students first enrolled
in the course? Why did the professors change the course “Visualizing Japan” into an
MOOC platform? What are its effects? Did it improve its number of students? How many
professors worked on the MOOC subject?
Visualizing Culture as a tradition subject is consisted of social and cultural history,
it was made for students to develop innovative kind of learning. When the course first started it
has 3,000 enrollees and 1,172 are able to complete the course and based on professor
Miyagawa it is actually a high completion rate. They change the course into a MOOC platform
as to innovate it and make better improvements that is why they also did collaborations with
many institutions. By making this step, students become more interested to try MOOC, that is
why the number of enrollees also increased by the year of using it. As the number of students
increases, the professors also need to increase in that way they could properly manage and
teach the students accordingly.

3. Do you think the Philippines should have an MOOC in the future? Explain your answer.
In my own perception, I think that Philippines should have an MOOC in the near
future because this could be a great help, not just for us students but also to the other people
that would like to interact and share ideas with one another. As it does not limit people of any
ages to use it, this is also the most convenient way to have a discussion with other people
especially if we relate it to the current situation that the world is facing right now. In the middle
of a pandemic, we must limit the face-to-face interaction to also lessen the virus from
spreading. Having MOOC in the Philippines is a way for us to still be able to learn, get
knowledge, and it can also accommodate a lot of people because it is online based. That is why
I would say that having it in our country could be beneficial for all of us.
