HW110 Viewpoints on Holistic Healing

Course Information
Course Title: Viewpoints on Holistic Healing
Credit Hours: 3
Prerequisites: None

Course Description
Over this three week course, students will explore the ideas of holistic healing through the
use of vitamins, herbs, and nutrition, contemporary and alternative medication, and stress
management. This course is aimed to allow students to access the benefits and
disadvantages that holistic healing can bring to an individual. Throughout the course
students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge through various
projects each week.

Course Outcomes
• Develop a basic understanding of how proper nutrients can lead to health
and well-being.
• Accurately be able to create a meal plan using standardized program such
as MyPlate.
• Exploration of the ideas behind contemporary and alternative medication.
• Describe at least three contemporary medical practices.
• Accurately describe mindful meditation and use at least one mediation.
• Relate the ideas of contemporary and alternative practices and proper
nutrition relates to managing stress and promoting health and wellness.

Course Policies
This course will be subject to follow all current Purdue Global policies. Please refer to the
Policy Information in the Purdue University Catalog to learn more. As a student in this
course, one is expected to uphold the highest level of integrity by completing course work
on time, refraining from any level of plagiarism, completing their own course work, and
avoiding posting course materials on third-party websites. Failure to follow course policies
can result in violation of the Code of Student Conduct.

Late Policy
All assignments are expected to be completed by the end of the unit and turned in before
11:59pm EST. As this course is limited on time, all work is subject to be turned in on time.
Discussions and seminar will only by accepted on time. Assignments may be turned in 2
days after the due date with a penalty of 10% for each day late equally a total of 20%
deduction total if turned in 2 days after the due date. Any discussion or seminars turned in
after the due date will result in a grade of 0%. Any assignments turned in past the second
day after the due date will result in a grade of 0%. For example, assignments are due on
Tuesday nights by 11:59pm EST, if the assignment is turned in on Thursday night by
11:59pm EST, the maximum grade that can be obtained would be 80%. If the assignment
was turned in on the Friday or later after the unit ends, this would result in a 0% grade.
Extenuating circumstances may happen during the time of this course. Professor(s) has the
discretion to evaluate extenuating circumstances and make exceptions to the late policy.
Be sure to communicate with your professor(s) if a circumstance comes up during the time
of this course. However, this course is limited to three weeks in duration and students
need to be mindful of the short time frame to complete coursework.

Tutoring
For students needing assistance such as one on one time or other resources, they may use
the allotted office hours. Office hours for the class will be held on Monday nights at 8pm
EST and Saturday mornings at 10am EST. Students may also request support at different
times by directly emailing their professor. This does not guarantee support at requested
time depending on professor(s) schedule. The professor however may propose a different
time.

Assignments
Throughout this course, students will be required to complete three assignments. There
will be an assignment every week. The assignments are expected to be turned in to the
appropriate Dropbox by the end of the unit. The assignment such be saved in such format,
StudentName_Unit#_Assignment. Assignments will be graded utilizing the grading rubrics
provided in the course materials tab of the digital course. It is highly recommended that
students review the grading rubrics prior to beginning work on any assignments.
For Unit 1, students will be completing a dietary meal plan using the MyPlate guidelines
from in the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
For Unit 2, students will be completing a PowerPoint presentation on their contemporary
and alternative medicine or practice of their choice. Students are expected to accurately
explain how their chosen medicine or practice relates to holistic ideas and how an
individual can use this knowledge to support their own health and wellness.
For Unit 3, students will compose an essay outlining how nutrition and contemporary
practices can be used in daily life for stress management and supporting health and
wellness.

Seminars
It is highly recommended that students attend the live seminar sessions via the Zoom link
provided in the course resources. Each week at the beginning of the week, Wednesday
nights, there will be a live seminar at 8pm EST. Students are expected to be logged in
punctually to the virtual classroom. Students are expected to come into the classroom with
muted mics to avoid distractions. Students are welcome to be on camera and use their mic
throughout the seminar as permitted by the professor(s). The seminars will last 90 minutes
and students are encouraged to stay throughout the whole duration.
Throughout the seminar there will be poles and questions given that students are
expected to participate in. Failure to participate could result in loss of seminar points.
Students who can not attend the live seminar or will be later then 15 minutes upon joining
will be required to complete the Option 2 for the seminar. Student who leaves seminar
earlier then 15 minutes of completion will be required to complete Option 2 as well.
Option 2 for the seminar is to view the live recording of the seminar and type at minimum
a one-page summary of the seminar material covered.

Discussion Boards
Each week, students are to complete the discussion board post and post an original post
to the board by Saturday of the unit at 12am. The post should be at least 250 words in
the original post. Subsequentially, students will need to reply to two fellow students or
professor by close of unit Tuesday at 11:59pm EST. The replies should be a minimum of
100 words will the expectation of furthering the conversation. Students are encourage to
be engaged in the discussion board throughout multiple days of the unit. Completing
initial post and replies in one day will result in deduction of points per the grading rubrics.

Rubrics
Students are highly encouraged to review the rubrics for each assignment, discussion
board, and seminar, prior to engaging in the material. The rubrics works as a student’s
guideline to success in this course. The rubrics will outline the objectives the professor(s)
will be grading on. The rubrics may be accessed at any time through the course recourses
in the virtual classroom.

Netiquette
Netiquette is internet etiquette. Students are highly encouraged to use netiquette in all
coursework. There are many rules that should be considered for netiquette. Although this
is a digital class, students are expected to participate and attend like they would an in-
person classroom. Some common but not limited to rules of netiquette are:

• Wait for appropriate timing to respond in seminars.


• Raise hand feature in Zoom when you would like to come off mute.
• Do not use rude or inappropriate language.
• ALL CAPS can be considered shouting and should be refrained from use.
• Be respectful of other students in the course by addressing them appropriately and
using positive feedback.
• Students should never criticize another student’s work negatively.
• We are using the intranet and should be aware once we post something, it will
remain there.
