SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 10
CONTENT STANDARD: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of measures of position.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD: The learner is able to conduct systematically a mini-research applying the
different statistical method.
LEARNING COMPETENCY: The learner illustrates the following measures of position: quartiles, deciles, and
percentiles. M10SP-IVa-1
I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a. Illustrate the quartiles for ungrouped data;
b. Calculate the lower quartile, middle quartile and upper quartile of a set of data; and

D. Presentation of the new lesson
Let the students create a sentence or phrase using all the words they have formed.
This morning we will discuss on the Measures of Position which has two types of data the
Ungrouped Data and Grouped Data. In this topic you are expected: illustrate the quartiles for
ungrouped data, calculate the lower quartile, middle quartile and upper quartile of a set of data,
and solve problems on quartiles for ungrouped data using Mendehall and Sincich Method.
E. Lesson Proper
1. Activity
Group Activity: Watch This!
a. You are the fourth tallest student in a group of 10.
If you are the 4th tallest student, therefore 6 students are shorter than you.
It also means that 60% of the students are shorter than you. If you are the 8 th tallest
student in a group of 10, how many percent of the students are shorter than you?

b. A group of students obtained the following scores in their statistics quiz:
8, 2, 5, 4, 8, 5, 7, 1, 3, 6, 9
First, arrange the scores in ascending order.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 9

Observe how the lower quartile (Q 1), middle quartile (Q2), and upper quartile (Q3) of the
scores are obtained. Complete the statements below:
Observe the position of 3 from 1 to 5
The first quartile 3 is obtained by ________________________________________________.
Observe the position of 5 from 1 to 9
The second quartile 5 is obtained by ______________________________________________.
Observe the position of 8 from 6 to 9
The third quartile 8 is obtained by ________________________________________________.
c. The scores of 10 students in a Mathematics seatwork are:
7, 4, 8, 9, 3, 6, 7, 4, 5, 8
First, arrange the scores in ascending order.
3 , 4 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 7 , 8 , 8 , 9

Discuss with your groupmates:
a. We observe that quartile ____________________________________________________.
b. To obtain each value, we have to _____________________________________________.
c. Regarding our observations, we can say that ____________________________________.
B. Analysis
The quartiles are the score points which divide a distribution into four equal parts. Twenty-five
percent (25%) of the distribution are below the first quartile, fifty (50%) are below the second
quartile, and seventy-five percent (75%) are below the third quartile.
Q1 Q2 Q3
a. 25% of the data has a value ≤ Q1
b. 50% of the data has a value ≤ X or Q2
c. 75% of the data has a value ≤ Q3
C. Abstraction
Mendenhall and Sincich Method.
1
Lower Quartile (L) = Position of Q1 = (n+1)
4
If L falls halfway between two integers, round up.
3
Upper Quartile (U) = Position of Q3 = (n+1)
4
If U falls halfway between two integers, round down.
For example, we have the data {7, 21, 7, 16, 27, 1, 30, 3, 31}. Find the first quartile (Q1), second
quartile (Q2), and the third quartile (Q3).
D. Application
Group Activity: Read and understand the situation below.
1. The owner of a coffee shop recorded the number of customers who came into his café each
hour a day. The results were 14, 10, 12, 9, 17, 5, 8, 9, 14, 10, and 11. Find the lower quartile
and upper quartile of the data.
2. Find the first quartile (Q1), second quartile (Q2), and the third quartile (Q3), given the scores
10 students in their Mathematics activity using Mendenhall and Sincich Method; 4, 9, 7, 14,
10, 8, 12, 15, 6, 11.
3. Given the scores of 11 students in their Science project determine the first quartile (Q1),
second quartile (Q2), and the third quartile (Q3).
{25, 18, 30, 8, 15, 5, 10, 35, 40, 43, 45}
4. Albert has an assignment to ask at random 10 students in their school about their ages. The
data are given in the table below.
Name Age Name Age
Ana 10 Tony 11
Ira 13 Lito 14
Susan 14 Christian 13
Antonette 13 Michael 15
Gladys 15 Dennis 12
5. Aqua running has been promoted as method for cardiovascular conditioning for the injured
athlete. A study reported in the Journal of Sports Medicine investigated the relationship
between exercise cadence and heart rate by measuring the heart rates of 12 healthy
volunteers. The data are listed below:
87 79 80 96 95 90 92 96 98 91 94 98
Find the lower and upper quartiles of the data.
IV. EVALUATION

The table shows the confirmed cases of 2019-nCoV cases and deaths by countries, territories, or
areas as of February 3, 2020. Find the first quartile (Q1), second quartile (Q2), and the third quartile
(Q3).
