The purpose of this document is to provide instructions for re-imaging VisionMaster FT workstations
in the field from a VisionMaster bootable USB drive. If you do not have a bootable USB drive, but do
have the .ISO file containing the image, please refer to section 2 for instructions on how to create
one. If you already have a bootable USB drive you can move straight to section 3.
The bootable USB drive contains a Windows image based installer, similar to regular retail Windows
versions. It contains everything required to install VMFT, including all required third party
components and drivers for all supported platforms. The process is mostly automated and usually
takes no longer than 30 minutes.
The upgrade process is by re-imaging only, and upgrades from version 9 and above have the option
to preserve customer data via a separate partition to the VMFT software. If this option is not
selected, or, if upgrading from Windows XP all data will be wiped from the target machine. It is
important that any customer data required after the upgrade is backed up before beginning the
process. See section 3 for details about how to do this for each upgrade path.
The recommended tool for creating the USB drive is ‘Rufus’. A copy of this application can be found
with part number VMC287.
1 With the USB drive inserted, open the Rufus tool and ensure the drive is selected in the top
dropdown box as highlighted.
2 Select the .ISO file by clicking the disk icon also highlighted in the image below.
3 Leave the other options at their default setting and click ‘Start’ to write to the USB drive.
Rufus dialog
After the process is complete the drive is now ready to be used. Note this can take up to 30 minutes
or longer depending upon the USB device (a USB 3 drive is recommended).
Note: This process cannot be run on an NGSM company PC when encryption of USB drives is
enforced. If you are using a PC with encryption enabled the ISO file and Rufus will need to be copied
to another PC.
When upgrading an existing system, a certain amount of existing user data must be backed-up. Turn
the system on, let it boot up and back up the data as follows. Note: The file locations mentioned
here have changed in version 9, so they need to be replaced in a different location. See section 5.8
Restoring User Data for details on how to restore them after the system has been upgraded.
Depending on whether the existing partition is being kept or not (as described in section 4.2) a
different amount of backup data is required.
If the upgrade is being applied to a version earlier than VMFT v9 (i.e. Windows XP) then the existing
partitions cannot be retained, must be overwritten, and all user data must be backed up. Similarly,
this upgrade path may also be used when upgrading from VMFT v9 to a later version and the option
to keep the existing partition is not selected, as discussed in section 4.2. Note: If it is required to
note the COM port used by Root Mouse, do this by opening the Device Manager and checking the
name as shown below.
A. Fill out the following sections of the Upgrade Record Sheet (Appendix A):
Note the time in transmit for each transceiver may be reset to zero during the
installation. The recorded values should be added to the ship’s transceiver log.
B. Backup the following data to a USB memory stick (and copy it to the customer’s memory stick
if possible) to prevent it being accidentally deleted:
Routes (Routes | Route Import / Export)
Parallel index lines (Nav Tools | Parallel Index Lines | I/O)
Radar maps (Nav Tools | Mapping | I/O)
Clearing Lines (Nav Tools | Clearing Lines | I/O)
Manual Update (Charts | Manual Update | I/O)
This backed up data should be reinstated after the installation is complete if the
original data is lost for some reason.
C. Back-up the current Config.cfg file to a USB memory stick. If the version being upgraded is
earlier than VMFT v9 then this is located in:
C:\Program Files\Sperry Marine\VisionMaster\Output\bin\Release\Config.cfg
If the version being upgraded is VMFT v9 or later then it is located in:
D:\VMFTDATA\Config\Config.cfg
D. Back-up the current EcdisColors.dat colour calibration file to a USB memory stick. If the
version being upgraded is earlier than VMFT v9 then this this is located in:
C:\Program Files\Sperry Marine\VisionMaster\Output\ColorFiles\Ecdis\EcdisColors.dat
If the version being upgraded is VMFT v9 or later then it is located in:
D:\VMFTDATA\ColorFiles\Ecdis\EcdisColors.dat
E. Save the current CID files, which if the version being upgaraded is earlier than VMFT v9 are in:
C:\Program Files\Sperry Marine\Vision Master\Output\CID
If the version being upgraded is VMFT v9 or later then they are in:
D:\VMFTDATA\CID
F. If purchasable feature Third Party Application is purchased (updating from 5.x, 6.x, 7.x and 8.x
versions), save the configuration settings :
NOTE: USER PROFILES WILL HAVE TO BE RECREATED WHEN OVERWRITING THE EXISTING PARTITIONS, AS VM
DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY EXPORT AND IMPORT FUNCTIONALITY FOR THESE . USER PROFILES WILL BE RETAINED
FOLLOWING AN UPGRADE FROM VERSION 9 OR LATER TO 10 OR LATER WHEN KEEPING THE EXISTING
PARTITIONS ( SEE 3.2KEEP EXISTING P ARTITIONS).
If the upgrade being applied to VMFT v9 or later there is an option to retain the data stored on the
D: as described in section 4.2. If this upgrade path is used then the amount of customer data that is
required to be backed up is significantly less.
A. Fill out the following sections of the Upgrade Record Sheet (Appendix B):
Make a note of the machine name, IP address and Subnet Mask.
Make a note of the display resolution of the monitor (right click on the desktop and
select Properties | Settings)
If the upgrade is being applied to a version earlier than VMFT v10.0 (for example a
v9 to v10 upgrade) note the state of the ‘Alarms On Cautions’ checkbox found in
Charts | Chart Dangers
If Root Mouse is installed make a note of the COM Port it uses as described above.
VMFT v12 includes an improvement to danger point manual chart updates. When the system is
being upgraded and existing partitions are kept, any existing danger point manual chart updates will
be automatically converted.
If any manual chart updates required conversion, this will be reported in an alert on VisionMaster
startup. The alert can be acknowledged; however it will remain and reoccur on any subsequent
startups until the conversions themselves have been reviewed and acknowledged. More details on
this are given in section 5.10 Confirm Manual Chart Update Conversions.
The method of entering the BIOS or BOOT menu in order to boot from the USB drive varies
depending upon the platform that is in use. The following gives details of how to do this for each.
Note:
Q87
Key to press to enter BIOS Menu: ‘Delete’
Once in the BIOS menu navigate to ‘Save & Exit’ then select the USB drive to boot from, under ‘Boot
Override’.
H77
Key to press to enter BOOT Menu: ‘F10’
When in the BIOS navigate to the ‘Boot’ menu and select ‘Hard Disk Drive BBS Priorities’.
In the Hard Disk Priorities menu select the USB drive as the ‘1st Boot’ device.
Note: It is important to reconfigure the BIOS to boot from the Hard Drive when installation is
finished to prevent the system attempting to boot from a USB drive inserted by the user on
subsequent reboots.
To enable booting from USB select ‘USB Configuration’ under the ‘Advanced’ tab and enable ‘Boot
from USB’.
On the “Boot” menu item for “USB Boot” change <Disabled> to <Enabled> to allow USB boot.
On restart of the Panel PC press immediately press “F12” to enter the Boot Manager
Select the USB Flash Drive to boot from it under the “Legacy USB” section
When the USB drive is detected as the first boot device the message ‘Press any key to boot from USB
…..‘ is displayed. Only press any key to boot from the USB drive on the first boot, after restarts
during the installation process this prompt should be ignored or the installation will begin from the
beginning.
Note: Sometimes the PC may not automatically boot into the VMFT installation, if you see the screen
below select the ‘Deploy an Answer File or WIM’ option.
In the select file dialogue, navigate to the USB drive and select the ‘AutoUnattend’ file. The
installation should then continue as normal.
After Windows installer has booted the following screen will be displayed. Click ‘Yes’ to continue.
After accepting the Licence Agreement one of the following two messages will be displayed. If this is
the first Windows 7 installation performed on the processor the message ‘Create new partitions?’
will be displayed, if this is the case select ‘OK’ to continue.
If the Windows 7 installation has already been run on the processor and an upgrade or reinstall is
required the message ‘Keep existing partitions?’ will be displayed. Selecting ‘Yes’ for this dialogue
will result in the data partition containing Charts, Config file, CID pages, Persisted data etc. being
maintained. This will be the usual preference for the majority of upgrades. Selecting this option will
mean all the installed data will be maintained and no reinstallation of Charts or re-commissioning of
settings will be required. If, however, it is required that this data is removed from the system in
order to completely remove any data present, select ‘No’ when this dialogue is displayed.
After this, the Installation will begin. Note that after Windows has finished the ‘Installing Features
and Updates’ phase of the installation it is safe to remove the USB drive from the machine. It may be
useful to do this if there are a number of other processors that require installation.
When the installation is complete you will be prompted to enter a suitable name for the processor. If
this is an upgrade and you have recorded a name during Section 3 using Annex A or B, enter this
now.
After this, the user account selection screen will appear. Refer to Section 5.1 Windows Account
Logon for Service for details.
On an ECDIS-E the following dialogue will be displayed. Select ‘Always trust software….” and click
‘Install’.
If you see the following message “Reboot is required for the desired changes to take effect!” it is
very important to select ‘No’, as selecting Yes will prevent the some installation steps from running.
After the first login to the Service mode desktop the following Service Shutdown dialogue will be
displayed. Click ‘OK’ to shut down and once the machine has powered of, power it back on.
At this point, if installing on an ECDIS-E, the Boot disk priority will need to be reset. During the
reboot enter the BIOS and ensure that the local hard drive is set as the 1st boot device. Refer to
Section 4 ECDIS-E and repeat the same process, but instead select the SATA hard drive instead of the
USB drive.
As of v11 onwards the username for logging into Windows as Field Service must be explicitly
provided at the Logon Prompt.
On starting a PC which requires logging into Service Mode Manually enter the username
“ServiceMode” and the service password (This password is the same as provided for commissioning
of the VMFT software. Refer to service support if you have not been given the password for the
commissioning of VMFT software).
The following situations are known to require specific steps to be taken for correction of the screen
resolution, but in addition to this all installations should be checked and adjusted if necessary to
ensure the screen is properly filled.
When installing on a Desktop 250 BTAG or a Hatteland 23.1-inch monitor the screen resolution does
not get set correctly. To correct this right click on the desktop, select ‘Screen Resolution’ and then
select ‘1280 x 1024’ as show in the screenshots below.
When installing on a Hatteland monitor of any size, if a correct fit for the screen size cannot be
found by selecting a new resolution as described above, click the ‘Advanced Settings’ link on the
Screen Resolution window as described earlier, then select the monitor tab and alter the monitor
frequency to be 60Hz as shown below.
Select 60 Hertz
When fitted with the 2GB variant of the GT710 graphics card, the video driver installation must be
run manually after installation. VisionMaster will not run if this step is not completed. In order to run
the installer follow these steps:
Select OK
If this is a clean installation and/or there is no previous Config file backed-up a default Config file can
be selected using the ‘Config Picker’ tool short-cut on the desktop. This will bring up the window
shown below. An appropriate Config file should then be selected and ‘Copy’ pressed to copy the file
to the correct location. This Config can then be opened using the ‘Config Tool’ short-cut on the
desktop, so appropriate modifications can be made.
Note: The Config tool no longer automatically opens the Config file. This needs to be selected as
shown below.
Depending on what scenario we are coming from, the installation of C-Map charts requires different
actions to be carried out:
Note: The following steps apply to all nodes which are licensed for C-Map in the system.

The Com ports associated with the PCIO and Control Panel are misaligned after installation if the
PCIO was not connected during installation. This needs correcting by running the ‘Run Com Port
Assigner’ shortcut on the desktop. Ensure that the PCIO and control panel is connected before doing
this. Note: Although it should not be necessary to do this if the PCIO was connected during the
installation, it is still recommended to ensure the COM ports are correct.
If two network adapters are available then the one that is not in use should be disabled to avoid
issues occurring such as Nodes not being able to see each other. To do this first right click the
Network icon on the desktop and select ‘Properties’.
.
Network Properties
Next, on the resulting window click the ‘Change Adapter Settings’ link.
Finally, Right click the unused adapter and click ‘Disable’ and the icon will become greyed out to
indicate it is no longer in use.
Apply the Windows Embedded Licence sticker to the front of the machine. This should be near the
DVD drive for ISIC and Desktop 250 nodes and at the bottom left hand corner for Panel PC nodes.
The user data backed up in Section 3 should now be restored, and depending on which upgrade path
was used a different amount of data restoration is required. Note: Sections ‘a’, ‘b’, and ‘c’ are not
required if the existing partitions were kept during section 4, and the location for these user files
was changed in VMFT v9. These are now located on the D: drive, as noted below.
D:\VMFTDATA\Config\Config.cfg
D:\VMFTDATA\ColorFiles\Ecdis\EcdisColors.dat
D:\VMFTDATA\CID\
Entering IP address
When the Config file and CID pages have been copied and every node in the system is in Service
Mode, open the Config tool and select ‘File’ -> ‘Synchronize Files’. There should be a green
‘Synchronized’ indication for each node in the system, as shown below. Note: When opening a
Config file from an earlier version of the system make sure to open and save it using the latest Config
tool to update any default values for newly added features.
Start VisionMaster and re-apply the settings recorded during Section 3 using the tables provided in
either Appendix A if the existing partitions were overwritten, or Appendix B if they were kept. Note:

If TotalTide is configured refer to step h) Installing TotalTide to install it before starting
VisionMaster. Also, if it was noted in section 3 that the ‘Alarms On Cautions’ checkbox was
previously checked, then both the ‘Navigational Hazards’ and ‘Special Condition Areas’ checkboxes
in Charts | Chart Dangers | Settings should be checked after the upgrade, as this functionality was
altered between VMFT v9 and v10 and setting these two new checkboxes is the closest way to
approximate the previous behaviour.
In addition, regardless of whether the existing partitions were kept or not, after reapplying the
recorded settings it should be confirmed as a final check that the Radar is tuned as expected, and
that the Video Level is set.
If installing on a H77 platform, there is a device in the device manager that is shown as not having
been properly installed. This is to be expected. No further action is required to correct this.
In addition, other platforms may show that the Microsoft Teredo Tunneling Adapter is shown as not
having been properly installed. This is also to be expected. No further action is required to correct
this.
h) Installing TotalTide
If TotalTide is required a short-cut to the installer can be found on the desktop. First run the
installer.
TotalTide Installer
When the installation is complete run the Service Shutdown application and once the processor has
shutdown, power it back on.
When back in Service Mode click ‘Start’ and then enter ‘services.msc’ in the search box, as shown
below.
Services.msc
In the Services menu scroll down to find the ‘TTService’ service. Right click it and select ‘Properties’.
In the TTService dialogue box set the ‘Startup Type’ to ‘Automatic’ as shown in the screenshot
below.
If installing a Client-Server System that requires setting up a Dual Homed LAN follow the instructions
found in the file ‘C:\Drivers\DualHomed\How to install a Teaming Network Adapter.pdf’ that is part
of the image as seen below.
If the field service fix and instructions for v9 (VMC293) have been followed for the previous
installation then PC NavTex may have been installed to D:\VMFTDATA. If this is the case, and the
existing partitions have also been kept then this installation location will still be present after a re-
image to v10, and therefore as part of the current re-imaging the PC NavTex installation folder
should be deleted from this directory, and PC NavTex should be re-installed as per Ship’s Manual.
This step is only applicable if this system has been upgraded using the Keep Existing Partitions
option.
VMFT version 12 introduce a change to manual chart updates (also known an mariner objects).
Some existing updates may need to be converted to new types.
A tool for automatically converting existing manual chart updates should run during the image
installation, but in rare cases it doesn’t.
Therefore following an upgrade installation of VisionMaster, the Mariner objects upgrade tool
should be run manually, and the output checked.
Sperry.MarinerObjects.ConversionTool.exe
The key item to check is that the overview page shows “No objects require conversion”.
If some objects do require conversion then the Convert button should be clicked.
If there were any manual chart updates which required automatic conversion, an alert is raised on
starting VisionMaster. This alert occurs on each node, and will reoccur on any subsequent startups
until the conversions have been reviewed and acknowledged.
MO Converted Alert
To review and acknowledge the conversions, open the menu item System / Commissioning, and
select the Charting tab.
Click on the “Review / Confirm” button within the Manual Updates Conversion panel.
There are normally three buttons on this dialog; Export Report, Confirm Conversion and Close. If any
manual updates required conversion, the ship’s crew should be informed so that they can review the
conversion results. The Export Report button allows the results to be saved to a USB stick.
Once the crew have been informed, the “Confirm Conversion” result can be clicked to avoid the “MO
Converted” alert appearing on subsequent start ups. On clicking the “Confirm Conversion” the
button then becomes disabled.
In the rare scenario where there was a failure to convert, an additional tab will be shown called
“Objects Failing Conversion”, along with a button called “Export objects which failed conversion”.
NB: The above steps should be performed on each node which is upgraded. Following this, the entire
system should be restarted to ensure there are no residual MO Conversion alerts on startup. If there
are, then repeat the above steps and restart.
Care should be taken when performing a split node upgrade; i.e. upgrades where one set of nodes is
upgraded independently of another set of nodes.
Nodes which have been split from the main network should be reconnected back one node at a
time. When reconnecting them, the following prompt may be seen:
A. If a secondary monitor is to be used and is not already connected, use the service shutdown
application on the desktop to shutdown and power off the system. Attach the secondary
monitor and power the system back on.
B. Load the Control Panel – Display – Screen Resolution dialog.
C. Click on the ‘Identify’ button to confirm the number assigned to each monitor. Note that this
depends on the physical graphics connector to which a monitor is attached. Make a note of the
monitor ID that is to be used as the primary display. Note: By default, VisionMaster will use the
monitor with ID 1 as the primary display, this can be changed in using the Config tool if
required, see step ‘I’.
D. Left click on the primary monitor and confirm that it is the ‘Main Display’. If not, select the
‘Make this my main display’ checkbox.
NORTHROP GRUMMAN Page 44 of 53

E. If the secondary monitor is physically located to the left of the primary, click and drag the
secondary monitor to the left-hand side.
F. Select the primary monitor (indicated by a blue border). Confirm that the resolution is correct
for the type of monitor and the orientation is ‘Landscape’.
G. Select the secondary monitor and set the ‘Multiple displays’ option to ‘Extend these displays.
Confirm that the resolution is correct for the type of monitor and the orientation is ‘Landscape’.
Note: standard resolutions for monitors include 1280x1024 (5:4), 1920x1200 (16:10) and
1920x1080 (16:9).
Monitor ID Configuration
J. Ensure that the ‘Display Secondary Monitor CID Pages’ configurable option is enabled, as shown
in the image below.
K. Start VisionMaster and verify that the monitors are displaying their intended screen (E.g. ECDIS
or Radar for the primary display, CID for the secondary).
If a serial mouse connected via a KVM is to be used, Root Mouse needs to be installed on all nodes
that use the serial mouse. Note: This is the replacement to the SerialScan driver used in version 9 of
VisionMaster. To install Root Mouse follow the Instructions for Installing RootMouse Driver PDF
found in C:\Drivers\RootMouse as shown below.
It is intended that on a newly imaged node there are two user accounts, ‘OperatorMode’ and
‘ServiceMode’. Occasionally a spurious third account is automatically generated. If this is seen the
account should be deleted. This can be done through Computer Management, as shown in the
image below.
