Sheet 1 - Solutions

Problem 1. Determine the magnitude and inclination of the resultant of the two force acting at the point
O in Figure 1 (a) by graphical method and (b) by calculation

(a) Vectors representing the 10 and 15 kN forces are drawn to a suitable scale as shown. Parallel
vectors AC and BC are then drawn to intersect at C. The resultant is the vector OC which is
21.8 kN at an angle of 23.4 to the 15 kN force.

(b)

𝑅! = 15! + 10! + 2 × 15 × 10 cos 60

which gives

𝑅 = 21.8 𝑘𝑁

Also

10 sin 60
tan 𝜃 =
15 + 10 cos 60

𝜃 = 23.4°

Problem 2. Determine the magnitude and inclination of the resultant of the system of concurrent forces
shown in Figure 2 (a) by graphical method and (b) by calculation.

Initially the forces are resolved into vertical and horizontal components as shown

Then
Now taking moments about the x axis
𝑅" 𝑦̄ = 35.4 × 0.5 − 20.0 × 1.25 + 69.3 × 1.6
which gives
𝑦̄ = 1.22 𝑚
Also, from Figure
𝑅" = 69.3 + 35.4 − 20.0 = 84.7𝑘𝑁
𝑅# = 60 + 40 + 34.6 − 35.4 = 99.2𝑘𝑁

Sheet 1 - Solutions

Now taking moments about the y axis

𝑅# 𝑥̄ = 40.0 × 1.0 + 60.0 × 1.25 − 34.6 × 1.0
so that
𝑥̄ = 0.81 𝑚
The resultant R is then given by
𝑅! = 99.2! + 84.7!
from which
𝑅 = 130.4 𝑘𝑁
Finally
99.2
𝜃 = tan$% = 49.5°
84.7

Problem 3. Calculate the magnitude, inclination, and point of action of the resultant of the system of
non-concurrent forces shown. The coordinates of the points of action are given in meters.

(a) The vectors do not have to be drawn in any particular order. The following figure shows the
vector diagram with the vector representing the 10 kN force drawn first.

The resultant R is then equal to 8.6 kN and makes an angle of 23.9◦ to the negative direction
of the 10 kN force.

(b) Resolving forces in the positive x direction

𝐹" = 10 + 8 cos 60 − 12 cos 30 − 20 cos 55 = −7.9𝑘𝑁
Then, resolving forces in the positive y direction
𝐹# = 8 cos 30 + 12 cos 60 − 20 cos 35 = −3.5𝑘𝑁
The resultant R is given by
𝑅! = (−7.9)! + (−3.5)!
𝑅 = 8.6 𝑘𝑁
Also
3.5
tan 𝜃 =
7.9
𝜃 = 23.9

Problem 4. Calculate the support reactions in the beams in Figure 4 (a)-(d).

(a)
∑𝑀& = 0
𝑅',) × 20 − 3 × 16 − 6.1 × 10
− 5.7 × 5 = 0
𝑅',) = 6.9 𝑘𝑁
∑𝐹# = 0
𝑅&,) + 𝑅',) − 3 − 6.1 − 5.7 = 0
𝑅&,) = 7.9 𝑘𝑁
∑𝐹" = 0
𝑅',* − 3.5 − 5.7 = 0
so that
𝑅',* = 9.2 𝑘𝑁
