Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of English grammar competence and
intensive speaking fluency. The correlation approach is used in this study to demonstrate
the influence between grammar competence and the independent variables. The
population of this study consisted of fifth semester students, English education study
program and the sample was 25 students. The findings of this study reveal that there is no
relationship between the independent variable and the dependent variable. From the data,
the significance value of both is > 0.05 (more than 0.05) which is .599. Meanwhile, as we
must be < 0.05 (less than 0.05). When viewed from the Pearson Correlation, which is
-.110. The guideline for the degree of relationship is in the range of 0.00 to 0.20 which
means there is no correlation and have negative relationship. By comparing the
contribution of the independent variable to the dependent variable, variable X and
variable Y have no correlation with each other.know, one of the condition for the
occurrence of a correlation is that the significance value
INTRODUCTION
Speaking has many different aspects including in two major categories: accuracy,
involving the correct use of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation practiced through
controlled and guided activities; and fluency, considered to be ‘the ability to keep going
when speaking spontaneously’ (Harmer, 2001) in (Mart, 2012).
Grammar
Grammar is grammatical rules that studies in compiling correct sentences. Simply put,
grammar is a sentence structure. With the correct sentence structure, a sentence becomes
perfect and easy to understand. The grammar that we often encounter is English
grammar. While in the preparation of Indonesian sentences, we adhere to the rules of
SPOK (Subject, Predicate, Object, Description).
Based on the explanations and definitions above, the researcher assumed that grammar is
important because it is the key in communication between the speaker that tell ideas and
the listener who catch the meaning from the speaker.
Grammatical Competence
Speaking
Speaking is the capability to speak fluently by using their knowledge, information and
say it by on the spot (Harmer, The Practise of English Language Teaching, 2001). It
consists of producing systematic verbal utterances to convey meaning. So we can
conclude to convey meaning, it can be determined by aural or oral skill.
Aspects of Speaking
There are several traits in speaking such as pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, grammar,
and comprehensible (Brown, 2003). Below, the description of some the relevant
components of speaking by expert.
1. Pronunciation
Pronunciation is considered a sub-discourse skill. (Fraser, 2002) explained that his fluent
English knowledge includes a number of sub-qualifications in which pronunciation is
paramount (other sub-skills of speaking include vocabulary, grammar, and pragmatics).
2. Fluency
Fluency is speaking slowly at normal speed without hesitation, repetition and the use of
harmonious compound statements speech. It deals with the way students to speak
fluently. (Spratt Matthews, 1991).
3. Vocabulary
Vocabulary can be defined as ''words we must know to communicate effectively; words
in speaking (expressive vocabulary) and words in listening (receptive vocabulary)''
(Susan B Neuman, 2009).
4. Grammar
Grammar is a set of rules that explores the forms and structures of sentences that can be
used in a language (N Ratner, 2009)
5. Comprehension
Comprehension is defined as the ability to understand something by a reasonable
comprehension of the subject or as the knowledge of what a situation is really like.
Intensive Speaking
As it has been already conveyed by expert about grammar and intensive speaking
fluency, both of them are so closely related, they are inseparable. Because, grammar is
branch of accuracy. Accuracy and fluency is aspect of speaking. As we can see if people
who understand about grammar they will speak more fluently than the others who do not
understand about grammar. According to (Richards & Renandya, W., 2002) in
(Abbaspour, 2016:146) grammatical competence helps speakers to use and understand
English language structures accurately and immediately, which facilitates their fluency.
In addition, they stated that accuracy is the basis of fluency, while fluency is a further
improvement of a person's linguistic competence and a better revelation of his/her
communicative competence. It means that we should to keep a balance between accuracy
and fluency in an English classroom teaching.
Research Question
Research Method
This research uses a descriptive quantitative research which applies correlation research
design, it was chosen because the research will present a correlation between grammar
and intensive speaking fluency, and at the end build the conclusion based on the data
gained. The researcher uses instrument such as: first, collecting the score of intensive
speaking course. Second, multiple choice of grammar test. Test for grammar to gather
information from students, grammar test consisting of 10 multiple choices. The last are
population and sample, the researcher take students from class A of English Education
2022. In this research the researcher took 25 subjects as sample from population. The
researcher collected the data from grammar test by numbers of student’s correct answer
then multiplied 10, the researcher use SPSS Program to see the correlation.
Result
This quantitative finding reveal the correlation between English grammar competence
and intensive speaking fluency. Based on the research question, it is stated that there is
any significant correlation between English grammar competence and intensive speaking
fluency. This current research addresses a research question as follows:
As it has been already conveyed by expert about grammar and intensive speaking

Table 1.1 shows that there is no correlation between English grammar competence and
intensive speaking fluency. If seen from the table, the significance value both is > 0.05
(more than 0.05) which is .599. while what we know, one of the conditions for
correlation is that the significance value must be < 0.05 (less than 0.05). When viewed
from the Pearson Correlation, which is -110, then the guideline for the degree of
relationship is in the range of 0.00 to 0.20 which means there is no correlation. By
comparing the contribution of the independent variable to the dependent variable, the
variable X and Y have no correlation with each other and have a negative relation. In
other words, there is no correlation between English grammar competence and intensive
speaking fluency.
Discussion
This research aims to see the correlation between English grammar competence and
intensive speaking fluency. Grammatical Competence is the unconscious knowledge of
grammar that enables a speaker to use and comprehend language. It includes the ability to
learn lexis, morphology, syntax, semantics, and so on. It contributes to communicative
competence. In short, it is an ability to speak with correct structure of sentences. While
Intensive speaking is drills or repetitions focusing on specific phonological or
grammatical points, such as minimal pairs or repetition of a series of imperative
sentences, where learners are going over to practice some phonological or grammatical
aspect of language (Nurfia, 2020).
In this research, the researcher wants to find out the correlation between English grammar
competence and intensive speaking fluency but it is necessary to test whether the variable
X affects the variable Y in accordance with the research question that has been
formulated, is there any significant correlation between English grammar competence
and intensive speaking fluency?
The answer to the research question above is there is no correlation between the two
variables because the significance value is > 0.05 and those variables have negative
relation between each other. This research proves that English grammar competence has
nothing to do with intensive speaking fluency. Those two variables can be correlated if
the scores hey get are balanced. However, in this research there are many factors that
cause those two variables uncorrelated. One of them is because their intensive speaking
score is too constant and did not related with their grammar scores. In short, there is no
correlation between English grammar competence and intensive speaking fluency and
those two variables have negative relation to each other in the findings of this results.
