1 NewSET Info
The NewSET tool is a software developed to easily communicate and interact with most of the new and
old ABB UPS models.

1.1 Functions
Different are the features added to the program over time including:

NewSET Rev. Implemented Features/Modification

NewSET 5.0
– NewSET software upgrade and download of all related files (New FW revision, parameter
and calibration files) possible directly via FTP server from NewSET revision 5.0 (Feature
removed starting from NewSET revision ≥9.2)

NewSET 6.0
– New FW download procedure implemented from NewSET revision 6.0 enable to upgrade
almost all Main Control board series 2xxxx directly via RS232 or USB connection (FW up-
grade procedure previously possible only with FlashPro2000 adapter). This feature, to-
gether with the automatic board identification (Main Control or Interface board), has
been made possible thanks to a new BootLoader Generation 2 previously installed on the
selected board

NewSET 7.0
– Introduction of a “Personal License” starting from NewSET revision 7.0 (NewSET activa-
tion license based on user’s hardware)

NewSET 8.0
– A new “Calibrate Measures” menu can be enabled during the license generation process
starting from NewSET revision 8.0

NewSET 8.1
– New and more reliable “NewSET to UPS” connection procedure (See chapter 9)

– New module “Calibrate Measures” now enable with standard “KeyCode” license (See
chapter 11.6)

– The set of “Parameters” locally saved can be now loaded on NewSET and sent to the Inter-
face or Main Control board (See chapter 11.5.5)

– Minor corrections implemented on different NewSET menu (Removed unused menu)

The list only includes some features currently in the NewSET program. Functions added to those already
present in the program since the beginning of its development and which make it essential for a correct
diagnosis of the problems that can occur on the different ABB UPS.

1.2 NewSET 9.2 Modifications

1.2.1 New Implemented improvements & Fixes
Here the list of the most important improvements implemented on NewSET 9.2 revision.

The following improvements have been implemented with this firmware:

– Implemented new licenses management (See chapters 5 and 6)

– Added new “Activated advanced feature” on “Key Code” menu (See chapter 10.2.1)

– Added warning messages for the users before triggering critical operations (e.g. “Save
Params on Flash”). (See examples on chapter 11.5.1 point ❿, 11.5.2 point ⓭ or 11.5.3
point ⓰)

– Added a new “export to file” feature on “Parameters” menu.

This function enables the “Parameters” data downloaded and displayed in NewSET 9.2 to
be saved in a file in ".csv" format that can be edited with Excel program (See chapter
11.5.6).

– Extended customer interfaces connection address (From Id. 72 to 76). (See chapter 9.1)

– Added Parallel Firmware Update (PFU) feature that enables to upgrade more than one
modules inside the same parallel system in the same time (See chapter 11.3)
The new feature, to be enabled on all customer interface board mounted in the frame/s
where the involved modules are inserted (CI Software Feature Addr.92), requires a mini-
mum modules and frames Hardware and Firmware revisions (See table)

UPS Type MCB type MCB FW rev. CIB type CIB FW rev.

NW22085A ≥3.3
DPA 250 S4 NW40011B ≥1.7
NW40085A ≥3.4

NW41085A ≥1.0
MEGAFLEX DPA1 NW41010B ≤1.0 ≥2.0 (ARM)
NW41085B ≥1.0 (DSP)

1
The PFU feature can be performed only with all modules in the same parallel system loaded OFF on
MEGAFLEX DPA Pilot series (any FW revision) and up to FW revision 1.4 on MEGAFLEX DPA Mass Pro-
duction. No limitation is present with Mass Production modules starting with FW revision ≥1.5.

The following fixes have been implemented with this firmware:

– Generally improved program stability

– Improved the read parameters procedure and added warning message in case of error

– Fixed NewSET windows sizing error with particular display resolution or zoom configura-
tion

1.2.2 Removed Features

Here the list of the removed features on the NewSET 9.2 revision.

• The feature “NewSET software upgrade and download of all related files” (New FW revisions,
parameter and calibration files) possible directly via FTP server and introduced with NewSET re-
vision 5.0 has been removed to improve Cyber Security.
The new NewSET 9.2 revision and all related files must be now therefore manually updated (See
chapter 7)!

All files, including the new NewSET program revision, the corresponding parameters/calibration
files (MMDL/PMDL) and all FW versions will be made available from now on directly on the "UPS
Service Support" SharePoint (See chapter 3)

1.3 NewSET License Note

Because “Password” protected, a first personal NewSET license (license with limited time validity) that
give access to all modules present on the software, is provided to the field service engineers who at-
tends an official ABB UPS service training (Internal or external).

A new NewSET license with one-year validity must therefore be purchased before its expiring date to
continue support the UPS installed base (See Service News “SN 21-27_GN_NEWSET 9.2_INF” for com-
plete details).

Please Note:
Password provided for NewSET revision ≤8.1 are not anymore valid for NewSET 9.2!

It is therefore important to request the new password from ABB Quartino before deleting the current
NewSET program version installed on your personal computer.

Without valid license, the NewSET functionality are limited to the “UPS Events” download module.

1.4 NewSET Development Environment

NewSET FW has been developed with two different programming tools:

NewSET revision <8.0 Borland Delphi “6” (Borland)

(Embarcadero Technologies
NewSET revision ≥8.0 Embarcadero Delphi “Rad Studio”
from 2008)

1.5 Recommended Computer Environment

7 NewSET Upgrade & Files Management

NewSET Manual Upgrade

❶ Please Note:
The direct connection via FTP to ABB server has
been removed from NewSET revision 9.2.
The relative connection status to the ABB server
(ONL, OFFL ❸) has been also suppressed.

Therefore, also the related features to directly up-

grade NewSET program and all related files ❶,
present up to NewSET revision 8.1 under the “File”
❷ menu, are not anymore present in the new
NewSET 9.2 version.

All new NewSET upgrade, NewSET program, firm-

ware (*.nw) parameters (*.pmdl) and measure-
ments model (*.mmdl) files will be periodically pro-
vided via SharePoint as an installation file
compressed into a “.zip” archive.

To upgrade the program or any related files, just

download the new “.zip” archive and install it on the
same directory where the NewSET 9.2 program has
been originally installed!

New individual files that may be released by ABB

between updates or files for specific special pro-
jects will be also published to SharePoint in a dedi-
cated folder within the NewSET directory. These
files can be manually copied directly into the
NewSET installation folder on the personal com-
puter.

We suggest always checking the availability of new

files or update in SharePoint before visiting the cus-
tomer!

9 NewSET to UPS Connection

When the “License KeyCode” has been successfully entered the program can be executed.
Always verify the following points before proceeding:
• The cable (Serial or USB adapter) between Personal Computer on which NewSET is running and
the UPS is actually and well connected to the Customer Interface board or the RS232 present on
the module/UPS (Main Control board).
• The power supply to the Customer Interface and/or Main Control board is present.

9.1 NewSET revision 9.2 setting

NewSET 9.2 requires two separate parameters to be entered to correctly connect to the UPS.

COM The COM port used by Windows operating system to communicate with the UPS.
(Only COM port from 1 to 9 are currently supported by NewSET!)

Dev ID The address number of the UPS board where the serial/USB cable is physically connected.
• Dev ID. Nr. from 71 to 76 to connect to a Customer Interface board.
• Dev ID. Nr. from 01 to 30 to connect directly to a module.

Please Note:
With the exception of the MEGAFLEX DPA (Where the ID. Nr. of the Customer Interface board is differ-
ent for each frame present in the parallel system), always select ID 71 to connect directly to the UPS
Customer Interface board.
The selection to the modules, P01 to P30, is typically used only in case of direct connection to the COM
port of the latter, where the same is obviously present (Example: D1M, D2M).

Once the two mentioned parameters have been entered, NewSET will immediately try to connect to the
UPS (Customer Interface or Main Control board) automatically selecting one after the other all possible
communication speeds (Baudrate from 2400 up to 115200).

11.2 Firmware Download

This module enables to proceed with the Firmware and BootLoader Upgrade/Downgrade on all compat-

Two are the procedures present on this module:

• BootLoader generation “1”
This procedure, valid for old BootLoader revisions enable to download on the connected boards
(Main Control or Interface board) both the “BootLoader” and the “Firmware”
• BootLoader generation “2”
This procedure, valid for new BootLoader revisions enable to download on the connected boards
(Main Control or Interface board) only the “Firmware”.

The BootLoader generation “1” procedure usually requires a manual selection of the board to be updated
while the BootLoader generation “2”, implemented on NewSET program starting from revision ≥6.0, au-
tomatically identifies and selects the same.

This enables not only to facilitate the downloading procedure but also to minimize the possibility of mis-
takes by the operator!

In both cases, NewSET will always automatically select for downloading the last available Firm-
ware/BootLoader revision for the Main Control or Interface board to be updated.

The "Select arbitrary file" function, implemented on both the above-mentioned procedures, also allows
to load on the Main Control or Interface board any Firmware or BootLoader revision even if the same is
not present inside the NewSET folder.
(Particularly useful function in case or “Special Project” firmware revision download).

Complete compatibility information concerning the two BootLoader generation can be found on the
document “FW Revision & Compatibility” present on the service manual (“UPS FW” > “FW Revision &
Compatibility” folder).

Please Note:

11.3 PFU – Parallel Firmware Upgrade

The parallel firmware update (PFU) feature, introduced in the NewSET program starting from revision
≥9.2, allows to download (Upgrade or Downgrade) the Firmware on the Main Control board of one or
more UPS in a parallel system at the same time.

Please Note:
This function requires a minimum Hardware and Firmware revisions installed in the UPSs Main Control
and Customer Interface boards! (See table on chapter 1.2.1 for UPSs/Boards/FW compatibility).

The two parameters “92” (Software features activation) and “96” (PFU Baudrate) of the Customer In-
terface board from where the procedure is performed, must be also correctly set.

• Parameter “92” See relative “CIB_Software Version Code Settings” documentation on

service manual.

• Parameter “96” Set to “115200” for both DPA250 S4 and MEGAFLEX DPA

All UPSs involved on the parallel FW download procedure must be Loaded-OFF!

It is therefore important that the remaining UPSs still active on the same parallel system can support the
load. Otherwise transfer first the load to internal or external maintenance bypass before proceeding.

11.3.1 Parallel Firmware Upgrade Procedure

The data of all different parameters are here separated by commas in an easily understandable format.

Please Note:
The parameters present in this file are those accessible by NewSET according to the “license level”
used to download them from the Customer Interface or Main Control board.

Do not provide this file to ABB support for further analysis unless specifically requested. Instead, pre-

11.6.1 Measurement Types and Calibration

11.6.1.1 Calibration Procedures Types

Two are basically the measurement calibration types that can be performed via NewSET program.

“O” (OFFSET):
A. It is usually used individually ❶ to set in a curve with predefined slope the “0” level of the
selected measurement (Levels of Voltages, Currents etc.).
B. Or a reference point for a predefined characteristic curve (E.g.: Temperature probe resistive
characteristic curve).
C. Or together with the “GAIN” procedure ❸ to define the slope (Minimum value) of the spe-
cific measurement curve used to calculate all intermediate values (E.g.: Inverter Voltage, Bat-
tery Voltage).
“G” (GAIN):
D. It is usually used individually ❷ to define a specific measurement point in a curve with pre-
defined slope (E.g.: Input and output voltages).
E. Or together with the “OFFSET” procedure ❸ to define the slope (Maximum value) of the
specific measurement curve used to calculate all intermediate values (E.g.: Inverter Voltage,
Battery Voltage).

11.7 Test Procedures

This module includes two distinct procedures:
• Check the serial communication between the Personal Computer where NewSET is running and
the different UPS present on the parallel installation.
• Set the UPS date and time (Send the Personal Computer date and time where NewSET is running
to the connected UPS).

Test Procedures

Start first by selecting the “Test Procedures” but-

ton ❶.

11.7.1 UPS Serial Communication Check

UPS Serial Communication Check

Select “START Ups Test” button ❶ to perform the

❶ communication check with the connected UPS.

Please Note:
To speed up the test, NewSET checks by default,
the communication only with the UPS with Id. No.
from 01 (Single “S” or “P01”) to 06 (“P06”).

To add more UPS to the testing procedure just

move from left to right the appropriate cursor ❷
before staring it.
❷ Move from UPS Id. 07 (P07) to max. Id. 30 (P30).

UPS Serial Communication Check

NewSET starts immediately the test checking first

the communication with the UPS Identity Number =
“01” (Single “S” or “P01”).
❸ ❹
1. A string of data is sent to the UPS Id. No. 01
❸.
(The first two digit of the string represent
❺ the UPS Id. number)
2. If the communication is OK, the UPS with
Id. No. 01 replays to NewSET ❹.
3. The UPS Id. 01 is in this case correctly iden-
tified and the respective field become
“Green” ❺.
(The power of the UPS is also displayed –
“60kVA” in this case.).

4. The same string is sent to all other UPS ❻

❻ (Up only to P06 if the cursor ❷ is on the
original position).
5. Because in this example no other UPS are
❼ present on the installation and cannot obvi-
ously reply, the respective fields become
“Grey” ❼.

6. The test is indefinitely repeated until it is

interrupted by selecting again the “START
❶ Ups Test” button ❶.
7. “4” ❽ is in this case the time the UPS Id.
No. 01 has been positively replayed NewSET
during the same test (Information available
❽ only up to UPS Id. No. 06).

Please Note:
Do not forget to stop the test (Select the “START
Ups Test” ❶ button) before closing this page to
“free” the serial communication between PC and
UPS/s!

In this example the UPS selection cursor ❷ has

❶ been set to “15” and the procedure is automatically
querying all UPS within these limits; from Id. No. 01
(P01) to Id. No. 15 (P15).

Because only the UPS with Id. No. 10 (P10) is pre-

sent, only the respective field is “Green” ❾.

Please Note:

Set UPS Date and Time

In case the only UPS inside the series is the one

with Id. No. “03” ❽, the lowest number to be set on

the windows is of course “3” ❾.

NewSET tries first unsuccessfully to send the Date

and Time to UPS “01” (P01) and then to UPS “02”
(P02) ❿ because no UPS with these Id. No. are pre-
sent on the installation.

Date and time are then sent to the UPS with Id. No.
❿ “03” (P03).

The operation succeeded, and the information cor-

⓫ rectly sent to the selected UPS.

The procedure is completed with some “ERRORS”

⓫ (Normal situation in this case).
