Learning Competency: A.3 Identify canonical Filipino writers and their


contribution to the Philippine Literature. (Remembering)
ACTIVITY 1: Using your search engines, do a mini-research about local writers
from Nueva Ecija or from region 3. Identify at least two writers and include several
pertinent details of the such name, birthplace, career, occupation, and their
contribution in literature. Write your answers in the diagram provided below.

Writer’s Name: Tomas F. Agulto

What about him/her?:On December 21, 1953, in Hagonoy,


Bulacan, he was born. He began writing poetry at an early age
and had them critiqued by his family and neighbors. As a
member of Galian as Arte at Tula, he developed his poetry talents
more, and he moved on to work on different occupations,
particularly in the non-government sector, in search of his own
maturity. Lagi Na'y Kailangan Kong Gumising Nang Maaga at Iba
Pang Pagdidilidili (Always I Have To Wake Up Early and Other
Redlections, 1981), Bakasyunista (Summer Folk, 1984), and
Batanes at Iba Pang Pulo (Batanes and Other Lands, 1989) all
earned awards at the Carlos Palanca Awards for Literature. His
Palanca Award-winning work "Ang Mga Badjaw sa Tungkalang"
(The Bajao of Tungkalang, 1988) was also recognized. In 1987, he
won a medal in the CCP Literary Contest for his short tale "Ang
Walang Lubay na Istasyon ng Pag-asa" (The Unending Stations of
Hope and Search). The following poems have won the Komisyon
sa Wikang Filipino (or KWF, previously the Surian ng Wikang
Pambansa and subsequently Linangan ng mga Wika sa Pilipinas)
annual poetry contest: “Kalatas kay Pinang” (Letter to Pinang)
and “Umulan Man at Umaraw” (Rain or Shine); and “Malayo Na
Ang Narating Ng Pru (The Procession Has Covered a Lot of
Ground). The KWF has awarded him Poet of the Year three times,
the first time in 1988 for his poetry "Polusyon" (Pollution), and the
second time in 2009 for a poem about the famous plebeian
Andres Bonifacio. Ang Magandang Babae sa Sta. Elena is a
collection of poetry, tales, and essays, and SA.BA.TRISa
Masaganang Milenyo (2001) is a novel. Kuntra Krusada, a
collection of poems and essays, is due out soon.

Writer’s Name: Rogelio Mangahas

What about him/her?:He was born in Palasinan, Cabiao, Nueva


Ecija, Philippines, and attended the University of the East, where he
studied AB Filipino. Even back then, he was looking for people who
shared his passion in language, spending much of his time at the
University of the East with poet-friends like Virgilio S. Almario and Teo
Antonio. They were the driving force behind the second successful
modernist trend in Filipino poetry. Rogelio Mangahas received the
Palanca first prize for his collection of poems, "Mga Duguang
Plakard," as well as for his critical essay on Edgardo M. Reyes' novel,
"Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag." Manlilikha was co-written and edited by
him. , a poem anthology regarded by certain scholars as a seminal
achievement in modern Filipino poetry in the 1960s. Winner of the
1986 Palanca Awards in the category of essay. He was the editor-in-
chief of Phoenix Publishing House and SIBS Publishing House, as well
as a professor of Filipino language and literature at De La Salle
University, University of the East, University of the Philippines Manila,
and St. Scholastica's College. He worked as a literary consultant at
the Cultural Center of the Philippines and as the national editor of
Tenggara, a Southeast Asian literary journal published in Malaysia.
He received the SWP's 'Poet of the Year' award, as well as the
UMPIL's Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas. (Writers Union of
the Philippines).
