UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma

Unit 13: Unit 13: Extended project in creative media production

The Final Major Project (Year Two)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

FMP unit is the summative unit in the final year of the two-year qualification. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed over the entire course, to complete a creative media production project. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
further clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth.

Name
Jack Hopton-butler

Disciplines Video ,Editing and sound.

(primary/secondary
)
(e.g. video,
animation, sound,
photography, 3D,
etc)
Project (e.g. short
film, music video, Documentary
animation,
documentary, advert,
branding, etc.)
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)
I did have a background of creative media before I started this course, however
the past two years have opened my eyes to different software’s such as the adobe
suit, as well as different workflows and working to deadlines constantly. This
course has also narrowed my career choice from before college where I didn’t
know If I wanted to be freelance or employed as well as I didn’t know which niche
to go into, whereas now after two years I know I defiantly want to go into
advertising and especially content creation within that. This career choice has
influenced me to choose to create this idea of making a documentary for the
Dorset wildlife trust for their social media pages, as well as for the college to use
for their promotional needs.
MY strengths are working with video/DSLR cameras, using three point lighting,
adjusting the white balance, getting smooth handheld shots, making sure the
exposure is correct, editing to a beat, adding foley sound effects, colour grading
etc. Therefore, many of these skills will be applied to this project to make it the
best it can be for the clients.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

The overall concept of this project is two documentaries (one for the college, and
one for the Dorset wildlife trust) showcasing the behind the scenes of the filming
project called the creature of Gillman Lake. The first documentary will be the
overall day by day behind the scenes of the film including multiple locations
interviewing the cast and crew each day on their thoughts and progress of the
main film. The college would be the client for this video, to allow them to show
future students of the creative media course. Research I will need would be the
college branding and research into existing behind the scenes, as well as certain
effects and techniques I will want to apply.

The second documentary would be structured a lot shorter and will be a montage
style edit featuring separate shots of the surrounding wildlife that the film is being
set at, and various interviews talking about the trust and its partners for this
project. This idea will allow me to research into the trust, the nature within the
surrounding area, techniques I will use in the video and weather for the shoot
days. The main video should be around ten minutes and the second one should be
around 5 mins. To complete this I will need a video camera, boom mic, shotgun
mic, timelapse camera, drone etc. The style of filming will be handheld to
symbolise realism.
I have experience in creating shorter promotional videos so this will be a good
project to play to my skills and interests.

Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
These projects will allow me to evaluate my own work constantly through the use
of a dairy log, where I can reflect after everything I have done practically. This will
help me see my progress and find If I am on track to finish the videos. Another way
which I can evaluate/ reflect on my project is through questionaries and surveys,
finding information through people watching and commenting on my work will help
me understand what to include/ cut out. Another thing I will do is whilst editing I
can watch and take some time at the start of every editing session to reflect on
previous things I have edited to see where I can start off.

Section 4: Proposed Research Sources

One research proposal is the Dorset wildlife trusts website

https://www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk as this has most of the material I need to
create a video for them that is on brand including their logos and to make sure that
my project conveys their brand message through it.

Not only this but I can research into existing film behind the scenes documentaries
including this Avengers documentary https://youtu.be/lnHX3eg2oxI , this will help
me format and build a story within the edit to immerse the viewer completely to
make them watch the film.

Section 5: Equipment Required

The main on set recourses I will need includes a camera with a shotgun mic
attached so I can be able to interview people on the fly. As well as this I will need a
boom mic to do more formal interview setups. Other equipment include tripod,
monopod, DSLR (for timelapses), headphones and Drone.

In studio equipment will include a computer, premiere pro, after effects and a hard
drive.

Section 6: Resources Required

The main resource I will need is people to interview as I need information about
how the film is going and if they are on track. Finding people to interview will also
help me create a story within the documentary.
Another resource I will need to find out is location dates and times so I can be
there when they are filming important shots such as the creature coming out of the
lake.

Section 7: Skills to develop/learn

I will need to develop my questions that I will ask cast and crew as I want to get as
much information out of the interview as possible to tell a story. To do this I will
need to spend time planning questions and be able to think of detailed open
questions on the go or when I think is appropriate.

Another skill I haven’t spent much time learning is editing timelapses so they aren’t
just a boring static shot and make them entertain the viewer.

Section 8: Personnel and responsibilities

I will need to interview people so all of the main crew of the Gillman lake film will
be involved, as well as this I will need a small team including a photographer
(Owen) and a second shooter (Ben Newman) they will help me capture everything
that happens so that no moment is missed.

Section 9: Intended audience and context

My two main audiences/ clients are the Dorset wildlife trust and their customers
(people who are interested in wildlife in Dorset) as well as The College and their
future students looking to join the creative media course.
Not only this but my video will be premiered within a theatre showing most
students who were involved with the making of the main film and to people
involved in the behind the scenes video.

Section 10: Creative Mindsets

Ownership
These two projects are completely edited by myself therefore if I make a mistake its
my responsibility to fix it.
Critical Thinking
Throughout I will be asking different people on their thoughts and self-reflecting

Problem Solving
I am dedicated to creating a piece of work that reflects my work ethic therefore for
this project I will work around and spend time perfecting certain things.

Creativity
This project requires me to create a story therefore I will need to be creative doing
so.

Risk Taking
I am willing to implement different styles of editing and to take risks in cutting
things out to help the story flow.

Collaboration

I will not be afraid to ask for peoples opinion and to get people to help me with
certain things.

How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick a
theme or themes which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – Just think how fast this year has gone so far. Plan
ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.

4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you
undertake, the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just
describe but analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work, we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against SEVEN Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP
