ASSIGNMENT 6
WHAT DO CHEMICAL ENGINEERS DO?

Main Idea
Paragraph 1 : Many chemical engineers work in the chemical process industries.
Paragraph 2 : Chemical process plants starting from ide idea for a completely new product,
for improvement of an existing product, or for a way of producing an existing product at a
lower cost.
Paragraph 3 : Once the executives of company have become interested in the idea of
building a plant, their first step is usually to call for feasibility study.
Paragraph 4 : If it appears that the plant will make a reasonable profit, the next step is to
develop the engineering data that will be needed in designing it.
Paragraph 5 : The R and D engineer will often build and operate a model of the proposed
plant in order to find out what kinds of problems may develop and how to solve them.
Paragraph 6 : If the company decides to go ahead, the next step is process design.
Paragraph 7 : After the process design has been completed, the design engineer often
supervises the building of the plant. When the plant is finished, chemical engineers are
placed in charge of it to ensure its proper operation.

Re-tell Paragraph
Many chemical engineers work in chemical process industries such as food
products, plastics, paper, fertilizers, petroleum products, and basic chemicals used by many
industries, for example, acids, alkalis, and dyes.
The creation of a chemical process plant begins with an idea to create an entirely
new product, usually from a company's research laboratory. Then to improve existing
products or produce existing products at lower costs, while improving existing products
can happen to everyone.
The first step usually taken by executives of a company when they are interested in
the idea of building a factory is to request a feasibility study which includes an estimate of
the manufacturing costs of making the product and its market potential.
The next step is the job of the research and development engineer, namely
developing the engineering data that will be needed to design it. Research and development
engineers in large companies can be mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and civil
engineers. But generally, in the chemical process industry for research and development
engineers are from chemical engineers.
Research and development engineers will often build and operate a model of a
proposed plant to find out what kinds of problems might develop and how to fix them. This
is because commercial production can be different from laboratory processes. So, the
company's management had to decide between continuing the factory or canceling the
project.
If the company decides to continue, the next step is processing the design. The
chemical engineer needs to decide on the type of equipment required for each unit
operation and the material of the equipment, usually metal, plastic, or glass. Chemical
engineers also need to calculate the size of each item and contact various equipment
manufacturers to inquire about prices.
When the plant is completed, chemical engineers are assigned to ensure proper
operation. They are known as plant population engineers and are usually executives who
spend most of their time at a desk. Many people work under them, such as the operators
who run the factory on a daily basis as well as the maintenance personnel who look after
the equipment.

Discuss and answer the following questions.

1. Why is a plant that makes dynamite one of the chemical process industries?
Because dynamite is an explosive made of nitroglycerin using diatomaceous
earth (kieselguhr) as an absorbent that is directly related to chemical processes in
industry.
2. Petroleum is the raw material for a large industry. List some products made from
petroleum!
- Butane
- Diesel fuel
- Fuel oil
- Gasoline
- Kerosene
- Propane
3. What stages might the chemical engineers of a chemical process company go
through if they wanted to build a plant to make a new kind of fertilizer?
Their first step is usually to ask for a feasibility study of building factory.
the next step is to develop the engineering data that will be needed in designing it.
the next step is process design. In this stage, the chemical engineer decides what
kinds of equipment will be needed for each unit operation and calculates the size of
each item After the process design has been completed, the design engineer often
supervises the building of the plant. And then looks at what is needed to make the
new fertilizer.
4. Most homes contain various kinds of equipment, particularly in the kitchen. How
might an engineer use preventive maintenance to keep such equipment in working
order?
Preventive maintenance can be carried out routinely and scheduled, but
preventative maintenance of kitchen equipment is better done by the owner of the
kitchen equipment, and it is possible that an engineer can also perform preventative
maintenance on the kitchen equipment.
5. What are some of the things done by the engineer in charge of plant operation?
By knowing that problems might develop and how to solve them
6. Most chemical engineers work in R and D, process design, plant operation. What
are some of the other jobs chemical engineers may do?
Chemical engineers can also work in quality control, environmental health
and safety engineers, teaching staff, mining ang petroleum.
7. Why is consultant likely to be highly paid?
Because chemical engineering consultants act as outside contractors to
provide businesses and government agencies with specialized knowledge on a wide
range of chemical engineering applications and also a chemical consultant working
covering offices and laboratories.
8. In your country, is the government passing laws for improved health and safety?
Why might chemical engineers be hired to help enforce such laws?
Yes, because chemical engineers are taught to be thorough, precise and
careful in carrying out by system operations so that chemical engineers are hired to
assist in matters of health and safety.
9. Why do the executives of a company need to call for feasibility study?
Because engineering information is usually lacking, these estimates may
contain major uncertainties.
10. What is feasibility study?
Such a study involves estimating production cost for the product as well its
potential market.
