Cse 209 Mid

This document is a midterm exam for a data communications course. It contains 3 questions with multiple parts each. Question 1 asks students to calculate the number of wires needed for mesh and star network topologies, and discuss the consequences of device failure in each. Question 2 involves line coding techniques and generating digital signals from binary data. Question 3 addresses bit rate, signal level, and signal power for a communication channel based on its bandwidth and SNR.

Bangladesh University of Business & Technology (BUBT)

Department of Computer Science and Engineering

Mid-Term Examination: Summer 2021
Course Code: CSE 209 │Course Title: Data Communication
Intake: 43th, Program: BSc in CSE

Marks – 30
[Answer all the questions]

CO1 1. (a) Consider the following two networks: [5]

I. n+3 devices arranged in a mesh topology.
II. n+4 devices arranged in a star topology.
[where, n indicates the last digit of your ID]
Now, calculate the number of wires needed for each topology and describe the
consequences if a device fails in these two networks.

(b) Identify the following MAC address with brief explanation and also find out if [5]
there are any errors in the given addresses:
067: 04: 0G: 01: 8F: 4H
CO2 2. (a) Convert the following digital data into digital signal using [5]
i. NRZ-L and NRZ-I line coding technique.
ii. Manchester and Differential Manchester line coding Technique

Digital data: (45X1X2)10

Here, X1X2 denotes last two digits of your ID
[ Hints: Convert Decimal value into Binary to generate the digital data]

(b) A non-periodic composite signal contains frequencies from 100X1X2 Hz to 50kHz. [5]
The peak amplitude is 5 V for the lowest and the highest signals and is (15+ X1*X2)
Voltage for the middle frequency of signal. Assuming that the amplitudes change
gradually from the minimum to the maximum, Draw the frequency domain spectrum.
X1X2 means last two digits of your ID.

CO3 3. (a) Suppose, we have a channel with a bandwidth of ‘X’- MHz [where X is the last [5]
two digits of your student ID+1]. The SNR value for this channel is 255.
i) What are the appropriate bit rate and signal level?
ii) If we consider this channel as noiseless, then what will be the bit rate and
signal level?

(b) Determine the reasons behind the usage of -3dB for decreasing the signal power [5]
from max to one-half at the receiving end.
