UNIT 2 Multi-Grade Classes: Teaching Ready!

Lesson 1
Crucial Elements of a Multi-Grade Classroom

A. MODIFIED CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

INTRODUCTION
Handling a multigrade class takes the usual rigor of managing any other kind of
classroom. Though some teachers are apprehensive about handling one, there are
ways on how to properly and effectively manage a class with multiple grade levels. In
time you will discover that having such a class can be beneficial not just to your
students, but to you as well.
This lesson will discuss about ways on how to modify your curriculum and
instruction to cater to the needs of your multi grade class. Let the module guide you
into getting familiar with the ways on how you can modify your instruction for a
successful multigrade teaching and learning.

OBJECTIVES/COMPETENCIES
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
1. Enumerate and discuss the different ways to modify curriculum and instruction in a
multi grade classroom;
2. Plan your own lesson incorporating an option suitable to you and your students’
needs; and
3. Determine a modification needed to a given set of lessons.

ANALYSIS
Handling a multi-grade class is not an easy feat. In the earlier lessons,
reasons behind employing multi-grade classes were discussed. As
challenging and daunting as this may appear, there are several ways to
modify instruction and make teaching AND learning easier for us.

A. Subject Staggering Option

Subjects requiring more teacher pupil interaction are grouped with those

In this arrangement, the Teacher goes through an English 3 Lesson with the
Grade 3 pupils while a Pupil Leader helps her monitor the Grade 2 class
answer a self-learning kit. At the same time, the Grade 1 pupils get busy with
an individual art activity.

Your Multi-grade class does not have to choose and stick to one modification. You
may change your tactic based on your lessons, your students, or the classroom
environment. Feel free as well to experiment and try other options to build a stronger
repertoire of modification list you just might be using in the future.
