CHAPTER – 2 MORE ON WINDOWS 10

WINDOWS 10 IS THE LATEST AND THE MOST SECURE VERSION OF WINDOWS.


IT IS INTRODUCED BY MICROSOFT WITH ADVANCED AND MUCH-IMPROVING FEATURES.
IT IS EASY TO USE AND PROVIDES A USER-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT.

New Features of Windows 10

More Personal
Windows 10 is a personal digital assistant. It is the best gaming window and provides your device’s
synchronization features.

Continuum
It helps the operating system work better with devices that support a mouse, a keyboard, and a
touch input.

There are two modes for convertible devices –

1. Desktop mode
2. Tablet mode

To access the tablet mode –


 Click on the notification icon present in the notification area of the taskbar.
 This will open the ‘Action Center ‘ pane on the right side.
 Click on the tablet mode button placed in the quick tiles.

In tablet mode, the start menu opens in the full screen along with the currently active window. It
also maximizes all the apps, removes all taskbar icons, and leaves only important tray items. The
taskbar only displays the start menu, back button, search icon, and task view button.

Task View

The task view button enables you to organize the applications running on your computer. You can
create multiple desktops and view them by clicking on the Task view button.

Cortana

Cortana is a powerful search tool that answers all the questions. It can do several numbers tasks like
making a list, playing games, setting alarms and reminders, locating files and places, taking notes,
sending emails, and can browse the net to respond to your query.

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is the default Windows 10 browser. It enables you to conduct a safe and quick search
on the Internet.

It provides the features of –

Providing a reading mode

Saving your articles.

Annotating the web pages directly.

Action Center

Action center is the Notification center of Windows 10

It displays the alerts for your device.

The pane is divided into two parts –

1. Upper part – It shows the Tips and app notifications


2. Lower part – It displays a series of Quick Action buttons.
Quick Action Buttons –
Quick Actions are a set of
tiles that give access to
frequently used settings
and tasks, like, adjusting
screen brightness, turning
Bluetooth on and off,
switching to tablet mode,
etc.

Windows Hello

Windows Hello is a new


built-in biometric security
system for Windows 10. It
allows you to sign in to
your system using data,
like fingerprint, face, or
iris recognition. Biometric
logins are safe, secure,
and easy to create.

Creating a new desktop

To create a new desktop –

Click on the Task view


button located on the
taskbar.

The Task view pane opens.

Click on the New desktop


button present on the
bottom right corner of the
Task view pane.

A thumbnail of the name ‘


DESKTOP 2 ‘appears.

Utilities of Windows 10
Utilities are the additional programs on Windows. Windows 10 provides many utility programs for
the day–to–day applications and entertainment.

For Example – Windows Media player, VLC Media player, Steps Recorder, Disk Cleanup, etc.

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER


Windows media player is a utility program of Windows 10. It runs and organizes the digital media
files (Both audio and video ) available in the computer memory. This software allows you to play,
copy and create CDs / DVDs, and copy music and video to portable devices.

Ripping (Copying a CD to a computer )

Ripping is the process of copying songs from a CD to a computer with a Windows Media player. After
the process, we can play and organize the songs into playlists.

To rip or copy songs –

 Open Windows Media Player


 Insert an audio CD into the CD drive. You will see the list of songs stored on the CD on the
computer.
 You can select or deselect the songs of your choice.
 When the selection process is over, click on the Rip CD button.
 The ripping process will start and you can see the status of individual songs.
 After the process, the songs are ripped to the Music folder in This PC folder.
 Afterwards, you call to play the songs.

Burning ( Copying Data from a Computer to a CD )

Burning is the process of copying songs from a computer to a blank CD.

To burn a CD –

 Insert a blank CD in the CD drive.


 The Burn A Disc dialog box appears.
 Mention the CD name in the Disc title : text box, select the With a CD / DVD player button,
and click on Next.
 An empty disc folder will open. Drage the files that you want to get burned.
 Click the Finish Burning option present in the Manage tab.
 Again, a Burn to disc dialog box appears. Click on next.
 Windows Media player will open. Click on the Start Burn button under the Burn tab.
 The songs will get burned to the CD.

VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player is an easy-to-usee application that is used to run almost all types of audio and
video files.

To play a movie using VLC Media Player, follow the given steps –

 Open the VLC Media Player.


 Select the Media tab and click on the Open File button.
 The Select one or more files to open dialog box appears. Select the files that you want to
play and click on the Open button.

To create a playlist –
 Click on Tools > Playlist.
 The Playlist dialog box appears.
 Click on the Add to playlist button followed by Add file option.
 The open dialog box shows up. Select the files and click on the Enqueue button.
 The desired files will be added to the playlist.

Steps Recorder

Steps Recorder is a troubleshooting program. It creates a file that contains the screenshot of every
action performed by the user, it’s description in plain English, and the exact date and time of actions
that help in solving the problem.

Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup is a feature that allows you to remove unnessacary files from your hard disk to free up
space and help your computer run faster. It empties the recycle bin,and removes temporary
Internet files ,cache, downloaded program files and other items that are not been used for a long
time.

CONTROL PANEL

Control Panel is a system folder, using which we can make changes in the appearance and current
settings of the windows.

Some of these settings are –



Changing the Date and Time


Click on the Date and Time option in the Control Panel. The Date and Time dialog box appears.

By default Date and Time tab is selected.

Changing Date

 Click on the Change date and time button. The Date and Time settings dialog box opens.
 Select the current day in the displayed calendar.You can change the month using forward /
backward arrow buttons present on the calendar.

Changing time

 To change the hour, select the hour in the text box located below the clock.
 Click on the spin arrows to change the hour. Similarly, you can also change the minutes and
the seconds. Click Ok. The Date and Time settings will change accordingly.

Fonts
The different styles of writing characters in a specific size are known as Fonts.

Some of the popular fonts are Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, etc.

To view fonts, add new fonts or delete existing fonts click on Control Panel > Fonts. The Fonts
window opens. You can double click any font to view its sample.

Changing Mouse Settings


You can change the appearance of the mouse pointer, change the functions of mouse buttons or
alter the scroll speed of the mouse wheel.

Select the Control Panel > Mouse.

The Mouse properties dialog box opens.

The Button tab -


It provides the option of swapping the functions of left and right click, adjusting the double
click speed,etc.
- Under button configuration select the checkbox to make use of right click for primary
functions such as dragging and selecting.
- Under the Double click speed section, drag the slider towards right or left to make the
speed fast or slow, repectively.

The Pointers tab –


It provides the settings to change the size, color and shape of your mouse pointer.
- To change the pointer image, click the drop down menu under the scheme section and
choose any pointer scheme.
- To change the pointer image for particular functions, click the pointer function in the
Customize section and then click the Browse button for test.

The Pointer Options tab –

It provides the option for adjusting the speed of your mouse pointer.
- To adjust the speed, drag the slider as per your choice under the Motion section.

POWER SAVING MODES


Sleep Mode

Sleep is power – saving state wherein a computer doesnot turn off completely. The monitor and the
hard disk are turned off, all the open documents and applications are put in RAM and the system
draws a small amount of power.

It is useful when you want to stop working for a short period of time.

To put your computer to sleep –

Click on the Power Options in Control Panel.

Click on the change plan settings next to the Pwer saver radio button.

Select the duration of 2 minutes or as per your choice from thedrop-downn list of the put the
computer to sleep.

Click on Save changes button.

Hibernate Mode

Hibernation is a state wherein a computer shuts down to save power but first saves all the open
documents and running applications in the memory on hard disk. When you restart your computer,
the desktop is restored exactly as you left it.

To turn on Hibernate mode –

Right-click on the Start menu button or press Windows Key + X. A ‘Power User’ Menu appears.

Select Command Prompt (Admin) and click on the Yes button in the User Account Control dialog box.

In the Command prompt, type the command: powercfg/h on and press Enter key.

Now, type Exit and press enter to close this window.

Now, open Control Panel and open the power options.

Select the option Choose what the power buttons do present on the left side of the window and
then click on the Change settings that are currently unavailable.

Now under the Shutdown settings, select the checkbox of Hibernate and click on the Save changes
tab.

Hibernate mode will be a part of your shutdown options.
