What is Consumer Health?

•Consumer health is not just about


buying health products and
services. It is also about making
decisions and having a clear and
deeper understanding to make
wise decisions.
Vitamins and Minerals
Vitamin A
Also known as retinol. Helps maintain healthy skin.
Strengthen immunity from infections, and helps in vision.
Example: Cheese, oily fish, milk, margarine, yoghurt.
Vitamin D
It is needed to support bone and muscle health. Our
main source is sunlight, it is only naturally found in small
number of foods. Good source of it is oily fish and eggs.
Vitamin B1 (Thiamin)
Enables the body to use carbohydrates as
energy. It is essential for glucose metabolism.
Plays a key role in nerve, muscle, and heart
function. Good sources include pork,
vegetables, milk, cheese, peas, fresh and dried
fruits, eggs, wholegrain bread
Calcium
Helps build strong bones and teeth,
regulates muscle contraction, makes sure
blood clots normally
Iron
Helps make red blood cells (Oxygen
circulation), this mineral is found in liver, meat,
beans, buts, dark and green leafy vegetables.
Vitamin C
Helps protect cells and keep them healthy.
This is found in a variety of fruit and
vegetables, Citrus, bell peppers, tomatoes,
broccoli, potatoes.
What are Unhealthy Foods?
Unhealthy foods can be described as foods that
have less nutritional value and are high in fat, sugar,
and calories. Such food may be high in protein but
your body needs a certain amount of protein – not
in excess.
Why are certain foods unhealthy?

Food becomes unhealthy due to


its preparation method. If there is a
high amount of sugar, fat, and
sodium in food, it’s not good for
your health.

What difference does it make between eating healthy and
unhealthy foods?
Energy
Healthy food helps in providing more
energy to your body so that you can work all
day long without feeling exhausted. (Fruits,
green leafy vegetables, sprouts, raw nuts,
honey, yogurt)
Unhealthy foods on the other hand is low
in energy and high in fat content.
Taste
Many people avoid eating healthy, nutritional food because they don’t find it tasteful.
On the other hand, unhealthy foods are available in various varieties and are tasty as
well.
User Consumption
Unhealthy foods are preferred by people compared to healthy foods.

Habits?
Mindless Eating
It was discovered that the larger the plate or bowl you eat
from, the more you unknowingly consume.

New studies shows that it is not only what you eat that
makes it bad, but also When you eat.

Snacking around the clock often with high calorie foods
Skipping Breakfast
When you skip meals, your metabolism
begins to slow.
Emotional Eating
Both positive and negative emotion can
