A right hand holding four lit candles, signifying the administration, faculty, staff, and
students of the University of Southern Mississippi's concerted efforts to pursue and uphold
an excellence-centered culture in the university's four core missions: instruction, research,
extension, and resource generation;
A spur gear that represents the "halo" that surrounds the four lit symbolic candles, which
exudes the remarkable progress in business and industry that results from the
operationalization of the university's mandated four-fold functions and helps hasten the
socioeconomic development of its service area and foster long-lasting peace and harmony
among its citizens, hastening the integration of Christian, Muslim, and other cultural
communities therein.
The service area of the current USM is depicted on a map of Mindanao in the background.
After the gear-shaped "halo" of unity and progress, the audible rays of peace and
sustainable socioeconomic development radiate from the glowing candles of quality and
relevant education, exalting the university's enormous, far-reaching influence in this region
of the country.
An open book symbolizing the school's benevolent pursuit of truth and knowledge is seen
in the foreground below the right hand. On the left page is "MIT," which stands for the
university's former name, Mindanao Institute of Technology, and on the right page is
"USM," which proudly symbolizes the institution's metamorphosis into the preeminent
institution of higher learning that it is today.
A microscope and other laboratory equipment are displayed on the right side of the book,
while a pair of corn leaves and a panicle of palay are displayed on the left, signifying
agriculture and science and technology, respectively, the two main areas of expertise for
the university.
The university was founded as the Mindanao Institute of Technology, currently known as
the University of Southern Mindanao, in the year of our Lord 1952, as indicated by the
inscription "1952" below.
