Principles and Elements of Design

Good outfit should have proportion, balance, harmony, emphasis, and rhythm to express art principles.
Principles of design are recipe to good work of art. It combines to create an authentic placement that will
produce a good design.
Objectives:
At the end of this topic you are expected to:
1. identify the principles and elements of design;
2. explain the implication of elements and principles of design; and
3. apply principles and elements of design in designing ladies’ skirt.

Chroma- A quality of color combining hue and saturation.


Shade- A darkened area in a drawing or painting.
Tactile- Relating to the sense of touch.

Principles of Design
1. Emphasis- attracts attention in a garment. This one area or part of the body which needs emphasis or
needs attract attention.
2. Balance- This is feeling of visual equality in shape, form, value, color, etc. It is is the feeling of rest and
equilibrium. Balance can be symmetrical or evenly balanced or asymmetrical or unevenly balanced in
creating balance in dress designing objects such as darts, sleeves, and pockets are placed
equidistantly from the center for formal balance.

3. Harmony/Unity- The pleasing combination of the elements of design such as lines, shapes, color, or
texture which compliments one another.
4. Proportion- Refers to the relationship between one part of the design to another part or t the whole
design. It is comparing size, shape, and quantities. There is proportion when small prints are use for
small body size. Proportion is also attained when using odd numbers such as three flowers or five
buttons.
5. Rhythm- Lead the eyes from one path to another. It is created through the following:
a. Repetition- repeating color, texture, line or form in a way that stimulates the eye and mind.
Example: Pleated Skirt
b. Gradation- a gradual increasing or decreasing in size (large to small), direction or color ( light to
dark) Example: use of monochromatic color
c. Radiation-a condition of moving in all directions from center. Example: Sunshine design
d. Transition-Change from one element to another. To create good transition, use varied sizes of
designs. Example: Flowers of different sizes on fabric.

Elements of Design
Design refers to the general arrangement of lines, colors, shapes, details, etc.
1.Line

The basic part of any design is formed by lines. The eye tends to follow the direction of the line in a
dress design or in the fabric of the dress. Lines may be horizontal, vertical, straight, curved, diagonal, radiating,
down-sweeping, up-sweeping, or angular, and they are capable of creating interesting illusions.
a. Horizontal- gives the impression of shorter and heavier.
b. Vertical – gives the impression of height.
2. Color
Refers to specific hues and have three properties which are chroma, intensity, and value.
Color wheel-is used to show chromatic scale in a circle using all colors made with primary, triad, and
complimentary pairs that can produce dull or neutral color.
Black and white can be added to produce tint shade and tones.
Value- can be used with colors as well as black and white
Intensity- is the dullness and brightness of color.
3. Texture
It is about surface quality with tactile or visual. It is the degree of roughness or smoothness.
4. Shape
The two-dimensional lines with no forms or thickness. Shapes are flat and can be grouped into two
categories, geometric and organic.
5. Form
This is a three-dimensional object having volume and thickness.

Kinds of Skirt

Objectives:
1. Share the importance of skirt suitability in different body types
2. Assess the kind of skirt suited for different body types.
3. Draw skirt design.

Flare- to spread out or extend beyond the perpendicular.


Slim- Small or narrow in proportion to length or height; thin.
Elongated- to lengthen
Plump- having full of round shape

Skirts can be worn in any occasions, whether you have to dress formally or simply chill out in casuals.
In choosing the kind of skirt which is appropriate and becoming, you need to consider your size and figure.
A-LINE SKIRT
This is basic skirt that form letter “A”. It is narrow from narrow to broader
while approaching to hem.

FLARED SKIRT
This is an A- line skirt only with extra flare at the hem. A flared skirt is
suitable for thin people as it gives sexy appearance.

FIT AND FLARE SKIRT


Kind of flared skirt but its flare starts from the hips. It gives emphasis on the hip
curve and hides the lack of thigh curve.

STRAIGHT SKIRT
This type of skirt falls from the hips. This is suitable for most ladies but it still varies
depending on length, body shape, and waistline.

PENCIL SKIRT
This skirt is broader on the hips and narrower on the hem, just above the knee,
and sometimes has a back slit. It is suitable for women with slim figure as it
accentuates the hips and buttocks.

TUBE SKIRT
This skirt is longer version of pencil skirt. It goes down below the knee. This
appropriate to those with slim and skinny figure.

MINISKIRT
This type of skirt can be very short and gives emphasis on a woman’s beautiful
pair of legs. It also suitable for short woman because it elongates the legs.

PLEATED SKIRT
The flare of this skirt is reduced by pleats and fits the waist. It looks nice on both
slim and little plump figure.

BALLOON SKIRT
This is Bia or semi bias one piece of skirt. It fits the waist and the flare starts from
the waist.

LAYERED SKIRT
This skirt has gather on waist. The whole skirt tiered into pieces to form a layer.
This style broadens the hips and makes the waist look narrower.
