BS Assignment4

1. This document provides 10 questions related to analyzing relationships between variables using business statistics methods. Questions involve calculating measures of central tendency, correlation, regression, and predicting values. 2. Questions ask students to analyze data sets involving test scores and sales, ages and time spent in parks, entrance exam scores and student GPAs, and more using statistical techniques like scatter plots, correlation coefficients, regression equations, and predicting values. 3. Students are asked to interpret results and explain relationships between variables based on their analyses.

BUSINESS STATISTICS ASSIGNMENT 4

1. The lengths of stay on the cancer floor of Sunnyside Hospital were organized into a
frequency distribution. The mean length of stay was 28 days, the median 25 days, and
the modal length 23 days. The SD was computed to be 4.2 days.
1. Is the distribution is positively skewed, or negatively skewed?
2. What is the coefficient of skewness? Interpret.
2. ABC departmental Store gives in-service training to its salesmen which is followed by
a test. It is considering whether it should terminate the services of any salesman who
does not do well in the test. The following table gives the test scores and sales made
by nine salesmen during a certain period:
Test Score : 14 19 24 21 26 22 15 20 19
Sales : 31 36 48 37 50 45 33 41 39
Calculate the coefficient of correlation between the test scores and the sales. Does it indicate
that the termination of services of low test scores is justified?

3. Calculate rank correlation coefficient for the following data of marks of 2 tests given
to candidates for a clerical job
Preliminary test: 92 89 97 86 83 77 63 53 50
Final test : 86 83 91 77 68 85 52 82 37

4. The rank of same students in maths and physics are as follows. The numbers within
the bracket denote the ranks of the students in maths and physics.
(1,1) (2,10) (3,3) (4,4) (5,5) (6,7) (7,2) (8,6) (9,8) (10,11)(11,15)
(12,9) (13,14) (14,12) (15,16) (16,13)

5. The Farmington City Council recently commissioned a study of park users in their
community. Data were collected on the age of each person surveyed and the amount
of hours he or she had spent in the park in the past month. The data collected were as
follows:
Time in Park (hours) Age
7.2 16
3.5 15
6.6 28
5.4 16
1.5 29
2.3 38
4.4 48
8.8 18
4.9 24
5.1 33
1.0 56
(a) Draw a scatter plot for these data and discuss what, if any, relationship appears to be
present between the two variables.
(b) Compute the correlation coefficient between age and the amount of time spent in the
park. Provide an explanation to the Farmington City Council explaining what the
correlation measures.
(c) Calculate the value of the coefficient of determination ( R2 is called as coefficient of
determination)
6. The following data relate to the age of husband and wife
H: 26 29 31 33 35 34 38 39 41 45
W: 22 26 27 31 28 19 29 36 35 46
Obtain 2 regression equation and determine a. the most likely age of husband for the age of
wife with 30 years b. the most likely age of wife for age of husband is 32 years.

7. A survey was conducted to study the relationship between expenditure on

accommodation (X) and expenditure on food and entertainment (Y) and the following
results were obtained:
Mean SD
Exp. On accommodation 173 63.15
Exp on food and entertainment 47.8 22.98
Correlation coefficient 0.57
Write down the equation of regression x on Y and estimate the expenditure on food and
entertainment if the expense on accommodation is Rs. 200.

8. The following data relates to the scores obtained by a salesman of a company in an

intelligence test and their weekly sales (in Rs.1000’s) :
Salesman : A B C D E F G H I
Test Score : 50 60 50 60 80 50 80 40 70
Weekly Sales : 30 60 40 50 60 30 70 50 60
(a) Obtain the regression equation of sales on intelligence test scores of the salesman.
(b) If the intelligence test score of a salesman is 65, what would be his expected
weekly sales?

9. Find the relationship between entrance exam scores and the student’s CGPA
Entrance Score ,X : 74 69 85 63 82 60 79 91
CGPA, Y : 2.6 2.2 3.4 2.3 3.1 2.1 3.2 3.8
a. What is the relationship between the two variables?
b. Fit a simple linear regression model to the data
c. If the entrance exam score is 80, predict the student’s CGPA

10. Define correlation and its types. Mention the methods of calculating correlation.
