01 Laboratory Exercise 1 (Platform OS)

This document provides instructions for a laboratory exercise on operating systems. Students are asked to gather details about the operating system on a device they have access to, including the brand, OS, version, RAM size, processor, and display quality. Students then answer questions about the performance and functionality of their device and the relationship between components like the processor and display. They are also asked to research another operating system, describing its architecture, developer, and what makes it unique. The goal is for students to understand the key functions of operating systems and analyze different OS concepts.

Laboratory Exercise
Introduction to Operating Systems (OS)
Objective(s):

At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to:

 Determine the key functions of operating systems; and

 Analyze the concept of some operating systems.

Instructions:

1. Select a computing device or gadget (i.e., smartphone, tablet, and laptop) that you currently have access
to. Then, retrieve the following details about the device (5 points):

Device Brand/Model: iPad (9th generation)

Operating System (OS): iPad OS 15

OS Version/Build: iPad 15.7

Size of the RAM: 64GB

Processor: Apple A13 Bionic

Display Quality: 2160 x 1620- pixel resolution

Note: The availability of the details may vary depending on the type of device. If some details are not available, leave the fields blank.

2. Answer the following items in 3 to 5 sentences only (5 items x 5 points):

a. Describe the performance of your device.
Answer:
In iPad 9th generation, its operating system allows the user to perform dual-screen
features so that the user can multi-task from one application/website with another.
Moreover, due to its highly installed processor, it performed well in terms of multi and
heavy activities such as playing online games that cannot support if the processor is
not compatible with it. Lastly, in terms of its features, all of them are easy-touch and
user-friendly by notifying the user about the specific action that can happen if he/she
presses a button.
b. In your opinion, does the operating system affect the overall performance of your device? Why or
why not?
Answer:
The operating system affects the overall performance of my device since my device
sometimes experiences bugs and errors. The operating system helps resolve every
specific error and bug on my device by updating the operating system version of it. In
addition, in my experience, the newest operating system version installed boosts the
performance of my device in terms of playing online games, using multi websites, and
many more.
c. Give five (5) installed applications that greatly affect the processing speed or performance of
your device.
Answer:
Since my device is new and it has an Apple A13 Bionic processor, it currently
functions greatly in terms of its performance. However, for a long-time uses of my
device, I think that the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Clash of Clans, GarageBand,
Keynote, and iMovie will affect negatively in the future processing speed of my
device. So far, the said five (5) applications are only the application that consumed
highest RAM in my device
d. In your perspective, is there a possible relationship between the processor and the display
quality of your device? Rationalize your answer.
Answer:
The processor is also known as CPU or Central Processing Unit which is responsible
for giving the computer the instructions and processing power it needs to perform its
function. However, the display quality only depends on the higher quality of pixels
installed in a device that is responsible for producing quality displays such as images,
videos, and photos. Based on the two statements, it clearly stated that there is no
relationship between the processor and display quality since they have an individual
function on a device and each function does not concern with another.
e. Operating System, RAM, or Processor. Which among the three would you upgrade first and
why?
Answer:
Since I only use my device for educational purposes, I will rather upgrade my device’s
RAM first to allow managing the operations of a typical user, including emailing,
working with Word documents, and online surfing. Additionally, it speeds up data
transfers from memory to other parts of the system. In other words, my device will
suddenly be much more productive since it has a quick CPU and an equally quick
means of communicating with the other parts.

3. Search for another example of an operating system (aside from the operating systems that are already included
in the handout) and examine its architecture and specifications. Then, answer the following items:
a. What is the name of the operating system? (2 points)
iOS or iPhone Operating System
b. What is the latest version of the operating system? (2 points)
iOS 16.0.2
c. Who developed the operating system? (3 points)
Apple Inc.
d. Cite your reference(s). (3 points)
iOS Info retrieves from https://history-computer.com/apple-ios-operating-system-
guide/
e. Describe the internal architecture of the operating system. (5 points)
The architecture of iOS is layered. The applications and the hardware are separated
by an intermediary layer, preventing direct communication between them. Basic
services are provided by the lowest levels of iOS, and the user interface and complex
visuals are provided by the upper layers.
f. What makes the operating system unique? Rationalize your answer. (5 points)
Answer:
Compared to other existing operating systems, iOS promotes good quality of security
and privacy since only Apple Inc. is allowed to develop a device using their operating
system; compared to the android OS and Windows OS which are allowing different
companies to use their operating system. In addition, the uniqueness of iOS is it has
an easy-to-use user-centered design and allows app developers to make apps that
can be downloaded through the iOS app store.
Grading Rubric:
Criteria Performance Indicator Points
Content Correct ideas, concepts, and/or examples were included. 3
Organization The presentation of ideas was generally organized. 2
TOTAL 5
Note: DO NOT COPY AND PASTE. Students who copy and paste their work from any website or their classmates will automatically receive a failing mark for this assessment task.
