Read ME!!!
Here we are – the first half problem set of the first chapter! This problem set is designed to
give you practice on basic statistical measures questions. I hope that this problem set gives
you a sense of what fundamental statistics is and helps solidify your understanding of the
field of statistics.
Before you start this problem set, please do the following:

a) Review Lecture Notes, “Chapter 1,” for more information about introduction to statis-
tics.

As always, please feel free to drop by office hours or email or call if you have any questions.
I am happy to help out. Good luck, and have fun!!!

Important Notice
You are to solve all problems. These problems will be graded out of 5. Solutions that rea-
sonably attempt to solve all of the problems, even if the attempts are incorrect, will receive
a point.

Solutions that reasonably attempt some but not all of the problems will receive a point.

Solutions that do not reasonably attempt any of the problems – or solutions that are sub-
mitted after the deadline – will receive a 0 points.

Solutions that highly related to one another or have high level of similarities between two
or more students will receive -5 points . PLEASE DESIST FROM COPYING ONE
ANOTHER ∶ −(

Essentially, if you’ve made a good, honest effort to solve all of the problems and you submit
on time, you should receive full points even if your solutions contain errors.

Please make the best effort you can when solving these problems. I want the feedback
we give you on your solutions to be as useful as possible, so the more time and effort you
put into them, the better I’ll be able to comment on your solutions.

Problem 1

Records are measured from life span of 100 car engines from two car company sources.
The information yields the following frequency histograms. The numbers above the
rectangle are the years of the car engines.

Each sample has the same mean, 10. You will receive no credit for simply identifying
the correct; you must provide an explanation.

a) What is the most precise correct statement that you can make about the nu-
merical value of the median of the data from source 2? Do not explain your
answer. Hint: Here is a correct statement: The median is between 0 and 20.
This statement is not precise enough to receive any credit.

b) What type of data is in data source 1 and 2 ?

c) What can you say about the shapes of source 1 and 2 follow? You may explain
your answer using statistical measures

Problem 2

The mean and median of Hundyai is 𝑛 = 3 observations both equal 10. The mean and
median of Kia’s 𝑛 = 5 observations both equal 18.

a) Tata merges Hyundai and Kia’s data into one collection of 𝑛 = 8 observations. Is
it possible to calculate the mean of Tata’s data? If you think not, just say that.
If you think it can, calculate Tata’s mean.

b) Demonstrate, by an explicit example, that there is not enough information to
