Tutorial Problem: Open System (Steady Flow)

1. An ideal gas expands in an adiabatic turbine from 1200 K, 600 kPa to 700 K. Determine the turbine inlet
volume flow rate of the gas, in m3/s, required to produce turbine work output at the rate of 200 kW. The
average values of the specific heats for this gas over the temperature range are cp =1.13 kJ/kg.K and cv =0.83
kJ/kg.K., R =0.30 kJ/kg.K. [0.212m3/s]

2. Air enters the compressor of a gas-turbine plant at ambient conditions of 100 kPa and 250C with a low
velocity and exits at 1 MPa and 3470C with a velocity of 90 m/s. The compressor is cooled at a rate of 1500
kJ/min, and the power input to the compressor is 250 kW. Determine the mass flow rate of air through the
compressor. [0.6867kg/s]

3. A hair dryer is basically a duct in which a few layers of electric resistors

are placed. A small fan pulls the air in and forces it through the resistors
where it is heated. Air enters a 1200-W hair dryer at 100 kPa and 220C and
leaves at 470C. The cross-sectional area of the hair dryer at the exit is 60
cm2. Neglecting the power consumed by the fan and the heat losses through
the walls of the hair dryer, determine (a) the volume flow rate of air at the inlet and (b) the velocity of the
air at the exit. [0.0404m3/s, 7.31m/s]

4. Two streams of the same ideal gas having different mass flow rates and
temperatures are mixed in a steady flow adiabatic mixing device.
Assuming constant specific heats, find the simplest expression for the mixture temperature written in the
form, T = f  m1 , m2 ,T ,T 
3  1 2
 m3 m3 

5. In a gas turbine installation air is heated inside heat exchanger by 7500C from 270C at a velocity of 50 m/s.
Hot air then enters into gas turbine with the same velocity of 50 m/s and leaves at 6000C. Air leaving turbine
enters a nozzle at 60 m/s velocity and leaves nozzle at temperature of 5000C. For unit mass flow rate of air
determine the following, assuming adiabatic expansion in turbine and nozzle, calculate (a)heat transfer to
air in heat exchanger, (b)power output from the turbine, (c)velocity at exit of nozzle.
[726.62kW,150.2kW,452.3m/s]

6. 5m x 6m x 8m room is to be heated by an electric resistance heater placed in a

short duct in the room. Initially, the room is at 150C and the local atmospheric
pressure is 98kPa. The room is losing heat steadily to the outside at a rate of
200kJ/min. A 200w fan circulates the air steadily through the duct and the electric
heater at an average mass flow rate of 50kg/min. The duct can be assumed to be adiabatic and there is no
air leaking in or out of the room. If it takes 15min for the room air to reach an average temperature of 250C
find (a) the power rating of the electric heater (b) the temperature rise that the air experiences each time it
passes through the heater. [0.83kW, 1.230C]

7. A thin-walled double-pipe counter-flow heat exchanger is used to cool oil

(cp =2.20 kJ/kg.°C) from 150 to 40°C at a rate of 2 kg/s by water (cp =4.18
kJ/kg.°C) that enters at 22°C at a rate of 1.5 kg/s. Determine the rate of heat
transfer in the heat exchanger and the exit temperature of water.[484kW,99.20C]

8. Carbon dioxide gas enters a throttling valve at 5 MPa and 100°C and leaves at 100 kPa. Determine the
temperature change during this process if CO2 is assumed to be (a) an ideal gas and (b) a real gas. [0, 34.10]
