1. What are the punishments received by the people of Calamba, particularly the Rizal family, when the
Dominicans won in the hacienda case? Explain in 5 sentences only. (10 points)
When the Spanish Supreme Court ruled out in favor of the Dominicans, the tenants of Calamba were ordered to
leave their houses within twelve (12) days and evacuate their belongings or they would face harsher punishments.
The ruling paved way for the Dominican friars to own certain lands in Calamba and make the tenants pay a particular
amount of money for the lands they had occupied. However, due to their insistence to stay on the lands, Governor-
General Valeriano Weyler sent fifty (50) soldiers to evict those poor tenants where they burned and destroyed the
houses. On the other hand, Rizal’s family was also not spared from the eviction and as a result, the governor-general
also deployed troops to storm the Rizal residence and arrest José Rizal’s loved ones. Consequently, he flew abroad
for his own safety. (Palafox 2012)
Second European Sojourn (1887-1892)
2. In bullet form, enumerate five (5) writings/publications of Rizal during his second sojourn in Europe wherein
his radical ideas can be read. Provide a description for each work in 2 sentences only. (10 points)
El Filibusterismo: Also known as “The Subversive” when translated in English or “The Reign of Greed” as its
alternative English title, this second novel of Rizal highlights Spanish oppression across the Philippines. It
portrays how the corrupt Spanish elite—which consisted of government officials, friars, and powerful
enemies—amassed the riches of the Filipino people and abused them in their own homeland.
Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas por el Dr. Antonio de Morga, obrapublicada en Méjico el Año de 1609,
nuevamentesecada a luz y anotada por José Rizal: Simply known as “The Events in the Philippine Islands”,
Dr. Antonio de Morga displays the early Philippine history during the pre-Spanish colonial period and the
early years of Spanish occupation of the Philippine islands (Kuhonta 2014). During Rizal’s sojourn in
London in 1888, he studied de Morga’s work and decided to make an annotated version of the book for the
purpose of better understanding regarding grammar and context about the Philippines during his [Rizal’s]
time.
Sobre la Indolencia de los Filipinos: Also known as “On the Indolence of the Filipinos,” Rizal authored this
socio-political essay as one of his articles to be published in La Solidaridad, a newspaper established by the
likes of him, in five (5) successive issues, during his stay in Madrid in 1890 (Tapawan 2017). This essay
explains how the laziness of Filipinos is not inherent by nature but is deeply rooted from several societal
causes or problems such as Spanish abuse and discrimination.
Filipinas Dentro de Cien Años: Also known as “The Philippines a Century Hence,” Rizal also drafted this
socio-political essay as his entry in La Solidaridad in four (4) issues during his Madrid sojourn. Here, the
essay aims to forecast the country’s future within a century or a hundred years and remind, as well as
expose, the Spanish government of their oppression towards the Filipino people (Benavides 2022).
A La Defensa: Simply known as “To the Defense,” Rizal authored this article while he was in Brussels in
1889 (Veraflor 2016). In this essay, Rizal counterclaims an anti-Filipino writing and argues that the Spanish
friars have considerable influence in the archipelago’s political, social, and economic affairs.
