Statement from Sisters of Charity of St.

Augustine

We are informing people who have been approved for support from our Victims’ Assistance Fund,
established to help individuals who have told us they were abused at the former Parmadale Children’s
Village of St. Vincent de Paul.

In this initial round, we are providing support to 19 people, with some receiving financial support to
address particular needs that they identified and others, at their request, having a contribution made to
a charity of their choice.

We have listened carefully to each story and it has been a heartbreaking experience for our
Congregation which for so many years through the good work of so many Sisters has helped change and
improve people’s lives. That work will continue but when confronted with these stories, we also realize
that members of our Congregation strayed from our core mission and individuals were negatively
impacted by the abuse that they experienced. We recognized that we had to act and that we could not
repeat the mistakes of hoping the stories would go away or attributing the problems to just a few
among the many.

Our review process of each application included an independent investigator and a review of Parmadale
records, and all findings were shared with our Fund Review Board, which made the recommendations
for support.

While we have completed our work with the first phase of this process, we will continue to accept
applications for the second and final phase of this process this year. Here are important dates for our
second application period:

• Application completed and submitted by 9/30/23.

• Fund Review Board will conduct initial reviews of applications by 10/15/23.
• The Congregation will respond to applicants not requiring additional investigation by 10/31/23.
• Applicants requiring additional investigation will receive a Congregation response by 12/21/23.

It is our fervent hope that this support can help in the healing process.

While we will continue to protect the privacy of the people who have come to us with their stories, we
thank them again for their courage. They have helped deepen our own understandings of the long-term
effects of abuse and sexual misconduct. We are more committed than ever to keep working for the
healing of victims and the prevention of future abuse.
