Module 5 Assignment

The document summarizes 3 research articles. [1] The first article examined how aspiring principals used data to develop school improvement plans during their fieldwork. It found they were able to identify problems and create targeted plans to address issues. [2] The second article studied the effects of an 8-week mindfulness program for high school students. It found the program significantly reduced students' perceived stress levels. [3] The third article analyzed Ohio's school improvement grants and their impact on achievement and administration. It concluded the grants improved achievement but it was unclear if gains would be sustained long-term.

Module 5 Assignment

The first article titled, “How Aspiring Principals Applied Course-Based Learning to

Develop School Improvement Plans”, is an examination of school improvement plans from

aspiring principals in their field work. The study analyzed 77 school improvement plans. This

study aimed to observe what aspiring principals were taught in their field experience. Recently,

there has been criticism for principal preparation programs. Many people believe these programs

were “disconnected from practice” (Grogan and Andrews, 2002; Hess and Kelly, 2007; Levine,

2005) Researchers believe that aspiring principals should be engaged in “essential and genuine

school-based field experiences” (Darling-Hammond et al., 2007). The aspiring principals in this

study were all master’s degree students beginning their year-long collaborative improvement

project. The aspiring principals were told to create a school improvement team and examine

schoolwide data. The research shows that the aspiring principals were able to identify problems

to help recognize specific problems in their schools. These aspiring principals were then able to

create plans to address these problems. The aspiring principals used their knowledge from their

courses to identify and address the issues in their SIP. I can use this in my future educational

leadership practice when discussing SIPs. I will aim to use the schoolwide data to help identify

targeted students, the methods used for targeting students, the student outcomes, the strategies

used to achieve those student outcomes, and measures to track progress. (Bickmore, Roberts, &

Gonzales 2020)

The second article titled, “The Effects of an 8-Week Virtual Mindfulness Intervention in

High School Aged Urban Youth”, discussed a study on the effects of a mindfulness intervention

program. There were 8 weekly sessions given to 11th and 12th graders. There was a pre and post-

intervention survey given to the students in order to measure any changes in their stress levels.

“Mindfulness is the ability to be aware of everything in one’s experience including all five

senses, thoughts, and emotions.” (Galan 2021) High school students are often unaware of these

feelings which may lead to increases in their perception of pain, stress, etc. Research indicates

that there is a myriad of benefits associated with mindful meditation in the adult population.

After surveying 24 students, the researcher found that 50% of the post-intervention scores all

showed an average lowering of perceived stress. The results show an overall decrease in stress. I

can use this in my future educational leadership practice when thinking of new ways to engage

students and decrease stress levels. I currently work in one of the top districts where stress is at

an all-time high for high-school students. I would opt to use a mindfulness program and weave it

in throughout the day to bring down stress levels.

The third article titled, “School Improvement Grants in Ohio: Effects on Student

Achievement and School Administration”, analyzed the effect of Ohio’s school improvement

grant program on student achievement and school administration. The Federal School

Improvement Grant program allocated $7 billion over the course of 10 years to produce “rapid

and lasting improvements in the quality of low-performing schools” (Carlson & Lavertu 2022)

There has not been much research done on the effectiveness of SIG. The researchers aimed to

understand whether Ohio’s school turnaround efforts created the intended results. The results

show that SIG eligibility did have a large positive effect on student achievement. The results also

indicate that “Ohio’s SIG program provides little indication as to whether these initial quality

improvements will be maintained over the long haul” (Carlson & Lavertu 2022) I can use this in

my future educational leadership practice when discussing school improvement plans or

turnaround plans. I would use the data from the successful Ohio schools and try to replicate their

strategies. I could also use this information if I were in a less successful district that may receive

federal grant money. It would be important to note the findings of this previous study.
