Target
Hello Young Scientists!

Energy is present everywhere. It is needed by organisms like us, and

machines to work. Light from the sun is the major source of energy in our solar
system because without it, Earth would have no life. Energy is the ability or power
to do work. Work and energy are closely related. When work is done to an object,
energy transferred to that object. It can be transformed from one form to another
to become useful.
This module was designed to help you explain how energy is transformed
from one form to another. The activities and exercises are arranged to follow the
standard sequence of a lesson.

After going through this module, you are expected to attain this learning
competency:
• Demonstrate how sound, heat, light and electricity can be transformed
(S6FE-IIId-f-2)

Learning Objectives:

• Identify and describe the different types and forms of energy

Energy can be classified into two general types: kinetic and potential energy.
Potential energy is energy that is stored in an object at rest. Kinetic energy is energy
in motion.

Energy exists in many different forms. Examples of these are: chemical,

mechanical, electrical, thermal, sound, radiant, nuclear, and wind energy. Each form
can be converted or changed into another form.

Chemical energy is the type of energy stored in atoms or molecules. Chemical

reactions can either absorb or release chemical energy.

Mechanical energy is the energy possessed by an object due to its motion or

its stored energy of position. Mechanical energy can be either kinetic or potential.

Electrical energy is the energy carried by moving electrons in an electric

conductor. It is one of the most common and useful forms of energy. Example –
Lightning. Other forms of energy are also converted to electrical energy.

Thermal energy is a form of energy present in an object due to the movement

of molecules. This form of energy is also called heat energy.

Sound energy is the energy produced by vibrating object. Sound waves carry
vibrations through solid, liquid, and gas, which results in the transfer of energy
collected in the vibrations.

Radiant or light energy is a form of energy that can travel through an empty
space and can be transferred to another body.

Nuclear energy is the energy present in the nucleus of an atom. Energy is

released when atoms undergo nuclear fusion or nuclear fission.

Wind energy or wind power is the use of wind to provide mechanical power
through wind turbines to turn electric generators for electrical power.

Discover

In the previous lesson, you have learned the different types and forms of
energy. What are they? Can you still identify and describe them?

In this lesson, you will be learning the uses of the different forms of energy.
All forms of energy have many uses. Various forms of energy are used to generate
electricity and are used in appliances, transportation, communication, medicine,
industries, navigation, and geology. We use energy for our own convenience and to
make life easier.

Mechanical energy can be produced by things like gears, engines, locomotives,

pulling trains, cannon balls flying through the air or other mechanical devices.
Mechanical energy enables a body to do work. Mechanical energy makes work easier
and faster, makes things move and can generate electricity.

Chemical energy is stored energy. However, this energy becomes useful when
released through chemical reaction. During combustion, chemical energy is released
and changes to different forms of energy. Chemical energy is used as fuel, sustains
life, used to generate electricity and produces sound and light.

Radiant energy travels through an empty space. It can be transferred through

conduction, convection, and radiation. The sun is the major source of radiant energy.
Without the sun, there could be no life on Earth. Radiant energy has a lot of uses. It
is used for food making, for heating up Earth, gives light and color to the
surroundings, for drying and heating, for cooking, used in medicine (X-ray, scanning
machines and laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) and
also used as a source of electricity.

Communication uses sound energy. To relay meanings of words requires the

use of sound. We learn things in our environment and what goes on around us
through communication devices that use sound like the telephone, radio and others.
Sound energy is used in geology (locating oil and mineral reservoirs underground),
navigation (ultrasonic waves, SONAR-Sound Navigation Ranging, submarines, sonar
devices) and in medicine (ultrasound).

Cooking food by conduction, convection, and radiation is using thermal

energy. By conduction, the energy of the hot iron pan can cook the food placed on it.
Food placed in boiling water is being cooked by convection. Lechon is cooked by
radiation. Thermal energy is also used to warm the surroundings and generates
electricity.

What is life without electricity? We need electricity in doing work. Have you
experienced brown outs or power outages? What are the activities that you cannot
do without electricity? What happens to industries without electricity? Electricity has
many uses. It is used in transportation (Light Rail Transit (LRT), Metro Rail Transit
(MRT), and electric cars), makes appliances work to make life comfortable and
convenient, used in different industries (machines, cranes and tools), in
communication (televisions, radios, fax machines, computers, and telephones), and
in medicine (X-ray machine, Magnetic Resonance Imaging Machine (MRI), and
electrocardiograph).

LESSON 3: Transformation of
Energy

Jumpstart

Write your inference to this question in your activity sheet.

How is electricity generated in geothermal power plants?

Discover

In the previous lesson, you have learned the uses of the different forms of
energy. Can you still recall them?

In this lesson, you will be learning how transformation of energy occurred.

The world population relies heavily on energy of all forms. Energy appears in different
forms: heat, light, sound, and electricity. It can flow from one place to another and
can be transformed from one from to another. Every day of your life, you experience
multiple energy transformations. For everything, energy transformation is always
involved.

Energy transformation starts when radiant energy strikes the earth’s surface.
Some of this energy is transformed by photosynthesis into chemical energy stored in
the carbohydrate molecules in the plant. When humans or animals eat plants, the
chemical energy in the plant is transferred and becomes chemical energy in the
human or animal’s body.

As animals perform body processes like digestion, respiration, and circulation,

their processes are powered by the chemical energy stored in their body, which is
then transformed into mechanical energy. The same thing happens when work is
being done. The energy that will power dancing, running, jumping, and other bodily
activities comes from the transformation of chemical energy into mechanical energy.
As chemical energy is transformed to mechanical energy and mechanical energy
powers various body activities, heat is released, which is another form of energy.
Examples of Energy Transformation

Energy transformation also occurs in some objects that we use. When you
lighted a lamp or a candle, the chemical energy of the lamp or candle is changed into
light energy, and at the same time, heat is produced.

It is also similar to your toy car. Your toy car works because of the battery in
it. As you turn on your toy car, the chemical energy causes the machines to move.
This chemical energy is changed into mechanical energy.

When you pluck the strings of the guitar, the strings vibrate, and sound is
produced. The mechanical energy possessed by the vibrating strings is changed to
sound energy when you strum the guitar.

When you switch on the flashlight, the chemical energy stored in batteries is
converted into light and heat. Most of the energy is converted to light. Only small
percentage of the original energy in the battery is converted into heat.

Changing One Energy Form into another Energy Forms

Energy can exist in several forms and may change from one form to another.

Many appliances you use every day change electrical energy into other forms.
When you use toaster, it changes electric energy into thermal energy. The wires in a
toaster are poor conductors. They do not let the current flow easily through them.
Instead, the electrons in the current hit the atoms in the wire. The bumping of
electrons raises the thermal energy of the atoms, causing the wire to become red and
hot. The light energy toasts the bread.

Electric motors change electrical energy into mechanical energy. Electric

motors run many appliances at home. Washing machines, blenders, egg beaters, and
electric fans are run by electric motors. When the appliance is turned on, the
electrical motor changes electrical energy into mechanical energy. Can you give other
examples of transformation of energy in some appliances?

Potential energy could be converted into different forms of energy. For

example, when firecrackers explode, the chemical potential energy of firecrackers is
transformed into light, heat, and kinetic energy. In a nuclear power plant, nuclei in
atoms are transformed into more useful forms of energy. The potential energy stored
in a nucleus of an atom is transformed into electrical energy.

In a steam engine, the chemical energy of the coal first changes into the heat
energy which makes the train to move.
