A. Types Of Gerund
1. Simple Gerunds
The simple gerund is a simple form of the gerund which only uses

B. Gerund function
Gerund can be used as a subject in a sentence. Both Simple Gerund and Gerund Phrase can
both be placed in the subject of the sentence
Example:
Swimming makes me tall. (Swimming makes me tall.) Reading can improve our knowledge.
(Reading can increase knowledge.)
We can place the gerund in the position of the predicate noun in the sentence. And we can

⚫ His main interest is hunting. (His main interest is hunting.) My favorite sport is playing
football, (My favorite sport is playing football)
⚫ His job is making a beautiful handicraft. (Her job is to make a beautiful craft.)
• Her mother's hobby is cooking in the kitchen, (Her mother's hobby is cooking in the
kitchen.)

3. Gerund as the Direct Object
The third function we can place the gerund as a direct object in the sentence.
Example:
⚫ She stops working in the shop. (He quit working at the shop.)
In this function, the gerund can be placed as the object of a preposition. There are several
prepositions that can usually be followed by gerunds, namely at, of, for, in, on, before, after,
about, and to.
Example:
am tired of being your girlfriend. (I'm tired of being your girlfriend.) ⚫ Thank you so much
for coming. (Thank you very much for coming.)
We have to finish this task before going home. (We have to finish this task
before putting)
I look forward to meeting you soon. (I'm looking forward to meeting you soon.) I used to
listen to dangdut music. (I used to listen to music a lot
dangdut.)
