ABSTRACT
Welding process can be performed on similar or dissimilar metal.Welding of dissimilar metals
involves different types of metals with distinct chemical composition. In this paper welding of
similar and dissimilar metal joints of gas and tungsten inert gas(tig) welding are studied and
their mechanical properties are evaluated.Recently joining of dissimilar materials are of great
interest because of their wide spread applications in engineering structural materials.Problem
of formation of inter-metallic compound may arise which affect the weld quality. In joining
dissimilar materials having closer melting points, gas welding is the best choice however where
meliting point difference is high ,sound welding can’t performed by gas welding. In this case tig
welding is suitable. It was observed that weld-bonded joint by gas welding exhibit higher
tensile strength and hardness propertiesthan tig welding. The difference in chemical
composition further affects the weldability and mechanical properties of the joints.
INTRODUCTION
Until the end of the 19th century, the sole welding method was forge
welding, that blacksmiths had used for millennia fuse iron and steel by
heating and blowing. Arc welding and oxyfuel welding were among the
primary processes to develop late within the century, and electric
resistance welding followed shortly after. Welding technology advanced
quickly in the early 20th century because the world wars drove the
demand for reliable and cheap joining ways. Following the wars, many
fashionable welding techniques were developed, as well as manual ways
like SMAW, is one in every of the most standard welding ways, likewise
as semi- automatic and automatic processes like GMAW, SAW, FCAW
and ESW.
WELDING
Welding is a fabrication process where by two or more parts are fused together by means of
heat, pressure or both forming a join as the parts cool.Welding is usually used on metals and
thermoplastics but can also be used in wood. The completed welded joint may be referred to
as a weldment.Thr parts that are joined knows as a parent material. The material is added to
help form the join is called filler or consumable.Fillers are usually chosen to be similar in
composition to the parent material, thus forming a homogenous weld.
TYPES OF WELDING PROCESS:

➢ Oxy-fuel Welding
➢ Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Smaw)
➢ Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (Gtaw)
➢ Gas Metal Arc Welding (Gmaw)
➢ Flux-cored Arc Welding (Fcaw)
➢ Submerged Arc Welding (Saw)
➢ Electroslag Welding (Esw)
➢ Electric Resistance Welding (Erw)
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF WELD JOINT
All the joints are withstanding the applied pressure as the analysed stress
values are less than the yield stress of steel. The tee joints has produced more
stress than other joints,so if the load on the welded joint is more, the tee joint
fails first than other joint.
FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR
DISSIMILAR METAL WELDING
➢ Solubility
➢ Inter Metallic Compounds
➢ Weldability
➢ Thermal Expansion
➢ Melting Rates
➢ Corrosion
➢ End Service Conditions
METHODOLOGY
• In similar metal welding, mild steel-mild steel and copper-copper joints
were accomplished by gas welding. However, mild steel- copper joint is
also develop by gas welding. In gas welding heat is required to melt the
surfaces of metal which is supplied by a high temperature flame obtained by
a mixture of acetylene (C2H2) and oxygen gas. A flame is used to melt the
metals at the joint, along with a filler rod to provide some extra material to
fill the gap. The high intensity of the arc melts the work piece metal
forming a small molten metal pool. Filler metal in the form of a rod is
added manually to the front end of the weld pool. Cu-cu joint is also
developed by the same process. For al-cu joint various alloy like zirconium,
thorium, lanthanum etc., Are alloyed with tungsten to improve arc stability,
better current carrying capacity, resistance to contamination etc..,
ADVANTAGES
➢ Welding establishes strong, durable, and permanent joint links.
➢ It is a simple process that results in a great finish.
➢ The technique, when used with filler material, produces a stronger
weld than the base material.
➢ It can be performed at any place
➢ It is an economical and affordable process
➢ It is used in various sectors like construction, automobile, and many
more industries.
APPLICATIONS
➢ Shipbuilding
➢ Automotive industries
➢ Construction industries
➢ Mechanical industries
➢ Used for most types of sheet metal welding
➢ Fabrication of pressure vessels and steel structures
➢ Automotive industry and home improvement industry
➢ Aerospace and aircraft construction
➢ Automotive industry
➢ Auto body repairs
