LESSON Expressing Values

1

EXPECTATIONS

You will express one value as fraction of another given their ratio and vice versa

Specifically, this module will help you to:

• recall writing ratio in fraction form and colon form;

• write the correct ratio in a given situation; and
• find the lowest terms of a given ratio.

Pre-test

Read the questions carefully. Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1. Which ratio is different from the others?

5
A. 5 to 4 B. 5:4 C. 4:5 D. 4

2. In a clinic there are 3 male and 5 female patients. The ratio of female to male is
____.
A. 3 to 5 B. 5:3 C. 8 to 3 D. 5:8
3. In the word MATHEMATICIAN, the ratio of consonants to vowels is ____.
13
A. 6:7 B. 7:6 C. 7:13 D. 6

4. A pet owner has 4 male and 8 female dogs. The ratio 4:8 compares ____.
A. male to female dogs C. female to male dogs
B. female to all dogs D. male to all dogs
5. In the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; what is the ratio of odd numbers to even numbers?
2
A. 3 B. 3:2 C. 5:2 D.5:3

3
Mathematics 6

Looking Back to Your Lesson

A ratio shows the relative sizes of two or more values.

Ratios can be shown in different ways:
• using the _:_ to separate quantities (colon form)

• using the to separate one value from the total (fraction form)

Since ratios can be written in fraction form, let’s try to recall about fractions. A
fraction is in its lowest terms when the numerator and denominator have no common
factors other than 1. We attain this by dividing the numerator and denominator by its
Greatest Common Factor (GCF).

Examples:
𝟑 𝟏 𝟓 𝟏 𝟐 𝟏
= = =
𝟔 𝟐 𝟏𝟓 𝟑 𝟖 𝟒

Review: Give the lowest terms.

4 6 4
1. 8 2. 18 3. 16

Brief Introduction:
Ratios are useful tools for comparing things
1:2
mathematically and in real life, so it is important to know what
1 to 2
they mean and how to use them. Let us know more about them 𝟏
by reading and understanding this module. Plus! There are 𝟐
exciting challenges you will be able to experience.

Study the word problem below.

Luke has 30 marbles, 18 of which are gray and

12 are black.
Questions:
1. What is the ratio of gray marbles to black
marbles?
2. What is the ratio of black marbles to blue
marbles?
3. What is the ratio of gray marbles to the
total number of marbles?
4. What is the ratio of black marbles to the
total number of marbles?
4
Mathematics 6
The ratio of gray marbles to black marbles is 18 to 12.
The ratio of black marbles to gray marbles is 12 to 18.
The ratio of gray marbles to the total number of marbles is 18 to 30.
The ratio of black marbles to the total number of marbles is 12 to 30.

What are the other ways of expressing the ratio of two numbers?
Look at this:
18
18 to 12 can be expressed as 18:12 in colon form or in fraction form.
12

12
12 to 18 can be expressed as 12:18 in colon form or 18 in fraction form.

18
18 to 30 can be expressed as 18:30 in colon form or 30 in fraction form.

12
12 to 30 can be expressed as 12:30 in colon form or 30 in fraction form.

We can express ratio of two numbers in colon form (:) or fraction form.
Ratios (in colon form or in fraction form) are always written in lowest terms.
Thus, we need to reduce the ratio in lowest terms whenever possible.

Look at the table below:

Colon Form Fraction Form Lowest Terms

18:12 18 3
12 2
12:18 12 2
18 3
18:30 18 3
30 5
12:30 12 2
30 5

yellow plastic?
3. What is the ratio of biscuits wrapped in yellow plastic to the total numbers of
biscuits?
4. What is the ratio of biscuits wrapped in orange plastic to the total numbers of

Activity # 2

A. Read the statement and write the ratio in colon form.

For a fruit cocktail, I need 35 fruits. I will cut the following fruits
into small pieces: 10 apples, 5 papayas, 5 pineapples and the rest are
cherries.

1. The ratio of apples to papayas is ____.

2. The ratio of pineapples to cherries is _____.
3. The ratio of papayas to pineapples is ____.

letter stickers, 9 symbol stickers and the rest are
emoji stickers.

1. The ratio of number stickers to symbol stickers is ____.

7
Mathematics 6

Activity # 3

Give the ratio of the following using the pictures at the left column.
Then, create your own example of things using the same ratio.

1. triangles to circles
2. circles to triangles
3. triangles to total number of shapes
4. circles to the total number of shapes
5. apples to bananas
6. bananas to apples
7. apples to total number of fruits
8. bananas to total number of fruits

Remember

We can express ratio of two numbers in colon form using _:_ or fraction
form.
The order of the items in a ratio is very important and must be respected;
whichever word came first in the ratio (when expressed in words), its number
must come first in the ratio.
