Addition Subtraction and Multiplication of Matrices

The lesson plan is for an 11th grade mathematics class on matrices. It provides specific objectives for students to learn how to perform addition, subtraction, scalar multiplication, and multiplication on matrices. It then gives examples and explanations of how to perform each of these operations on matrices, including adding, subtracting, multiplying matrices by scalars or constants, and multiplying two matrices together. It concludes with sample problems for students to practice performing these operations on given matrices.

Lesson Plan (Lesson 2)

Grade: 11
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Matrices
Specific Objectives: At the end of this lesson students should be able to:-

1. Perform addition, subtraction, scalar multiplication and multiplication on given Matrices.

Adding matrices

To add two matrices, just add the numbers in the matching positions:

The two matrices must be the same size, i.e. the rows must match in size, and the columns must
match in size.

0 0
NB. The identify matrix for addition is ( )
0 0

Subtracting matrices

To subtract two matrices, just subtract the numbers in the matching positions:

Note: subtracting is actually defined as the addition of a negative matrix: A + (-B)

Multiply by a Constant

You can multiply a matrix by some value:

We call the constant a scalar, so officially this is called "scalar multiplication".

Multiplying two Matrices

It is important to note that two matrices can be multiplied if:

 The number of columns of the 1st matrix must equal the number of rows of the 2nd
matrix.

To multiply two matrices together, multiply each row of the first matrix by each column of the
second matrix.

It is important to note that ST ≠ TS and S 2 = S × S
