Assignment 5 Probability Distribution

This document contains 10 questions related to probability distributions and statistics: 1. It asks to calculate the lucky number for a coin flipping game played 200 times where getting 1, 2, 3, or 4 heads on 4 coins is scored. 2. It asks to calculate the probability of the share prices of two companies rising independently next week. 3. It provides a probability distribution and asks to calculate the expected value, standard deviation, and variance. 4. It provides the probability of defective bolts from a machine and asks to calculate the probability of getting exactly or less than 2 defective bolts from a sample of 10.

1.

You wish to play a game with your partner on Diwali with four coins getting 1 head, 2
heads, three heads or four heads. What should be your lucky number before starting the
game if 200 games are played?

2. A security analyst feels that the chances are 50% that the price of the shares of a
company would increase next week and 20% that price of the share of a company B
would rise. The two prices are expected to move independently of each other without any
relation with index. Find the probability that in the next week

a. Both prices will rise

b. Only one company’s share price will increase

c. Neither of the prices would increase

3. Find the expected value, standard deviation and variance of the following probability
distribution
x 10 15 20 25 30
P(x) 0.05 0.2 0.30 0.25 0.15
5
(Ans: Ex value 21, SD = 5.61, Variance = 31.5)
4. A factory finds that on an average 20 percent bolts are defective from one machine. I f 10
bolts are selected at random, find the probability that a) exactly two bolts are defective b)
less than two bolts are defective. ( Ans 0.3020, 0.3758)
5. Calculate the probabilities of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 heads on the toss of a set of five balanced
coins. Also obtain the mean and standard deviation of the distribution. ( Ans: 1/32. 5/32,
10/32, 10/32, 5/32/1/32, mean = 2.5, SD = 1.12)
6. Records show that on an average 4 complaints are registered with police post in an area
during 12 hours interval. Find the expected number of complaints filed in 24 hours period
ii) the probability that at the most two complaints will be filed in 24 hours interval. ( Ans
8, 0.0138)
7. A call centre with a large number of computer systems reports that, on an average, per
week 6 systems develop some problems that need to be attended by a service mechanic.
Calculate probability that during a given week at least 3 but not more than 7 systems will
have problems
8. Explain the assumption of Normal Probability Distribution. What happens if they do not
follow?
9. Flaws in a certain type of cloth processed in a cotton mill occur randomly with a mean of
one flaw per 8 square meters. Find the probability of no flaws in a piece of 20 metres by
2 metres. ( Ans 0.0337)
10. Explain the difference between binomial distribution and Poisson distribution. There is a
0.001 probability of a faulty call on a telephone line and 2000 calls are made everyday.
What is the probability of there being less three faulty calls on the line in a day. ( Ans
0.6765)
