MATH1821: Mathematical methods for actuarial science I

December 11, 2014 9:30a.m. - 12:00noon

Only approved calculators as announced by the Examinations Secretary can be used

in this examination. It is candidates' responsibility to ensure that their calcula-
tor operates satisfactorily, and candidates must record the name and type of the
calculator used on the front page of the examination script.

Answer ALL SIX questions

Note: You should always give precise and adequate explanations to support your
conclusions. Clarity of presentation of your argument counts. So think carefully
before you write.

P.1 of 3
1. Let A= (~ ~l J 2
) and 0 # b E ~3 .
(a) Show that A is invertible.

(b) If S: ~ 3 --+ ~ 3 is defined by S(x) =bx (Ax), determine whether Sis

(i) injective and (ii) surjective.

(c) If b = (0 1 l)T, find the angle between Ab and b. (6 marks)

2. Determine the value of c so that the function below is continuous at x = 0:

(
x )1/x if x # 0,
f(x) = ce -x
{ if x = 0.
(4 marks)

3. A remote control helicopter with camera is rising vertically above a straight

highway at a constant speed lOm/ s when a car is running towards it with a
constant speed 12m/s. Suppose that the helicopter is 60m above the ground
when the car passes beneath it. Determine how fast the distance between
them is increa8ing after 4s. (4 marks)

4. Evaluate the following integrals.

rn/4 6
(a) Jo tan x dx.

3x2 +7x+l3 d
(b) J (x - 2)(x2 + 2x + 5) x. (12 marks)

5. Solve the following differential equations or initial value problems.

(a) y' = xex2 +y

(b) y' + ytanx =cos x, y(O) = 3.
(c) y" - 3y' - 4 = xe-x. (12 marks)

6. Let f(x) = lncosx, -7r/2 < x < 7r/2.

(a) Find the degree two Taylor polynomial of f at x = 0. Hence give an

approximation of f (7r / 4). Please leave your answer in terms of 7r if
appropriate.

P.2 of 3
(b) Use Newton's method tosolvex-1=J(x),0<x<1, with initial guess
x 1 = 0. Correct your answer to 4 decimal places.

(c) Usethetrapezoidalrulewithn = 4toapproximatetheintegral 1' J(x) dx

and give an upper bound to the error committed. Correct your answer
to 4 decimal places. (12 marks)
