Introduction “I DO”  cards

● Explain the context to students.

● Take students to the playground and divide students into eight

teams.

Main teaching points:

Activities “WE DO” – Teacher/student interaction and/or students working
together

Distribute the following number of balls to the teams.

Play a game with instructions as follows.

• Team 1 gives 15 balls to team 2.

• Team 3 gives no ball to team 4.

• Team 5 and team 6 add their balls together.

• Team 7 and team 8 add their balls together.

• Team 6 takes 2 balls from team 5.

• Team 8 takes 6 balls from team 7.

Questions

• How many balls are left with team 1 after it gives 15 balls to team 2?
• How many balls are left with team 3?

• How many balls does team 4 have after the game is played?

• Does the number of balls that team 5 and team 6 have together equal the
number of

balls that team 7 and team 8 have together?

• Can team 6 take 2 balls from team 5?

• Can team 8 take 6 balls from team 7?

Make sure to draw a comparison and reflect upon the difference in addition
and

subtraction with respect to the same kind of property.

Introduction “I DO”  (0-9, 10, 20......90)

Teach students how to add 2-digit numbers using the following activities.

Main teaching points:

Activities “WE DO” – Teacher/student interaction and/or students working
together

Distribute number cards to students in pairs.

Write a number on the board, say, 34.

Ask students to make the number using the cards they have.

e.g. for 34, students show cards of 30 and 4.

Share with students that when we break a number like this,

we say that we are splitting the number.

Discuss multiple ways of splitting using different strategies.

Activities “YOU DO” – Challenging/meaningful independent tasks

Level 1,2 : Individual work (TB P.10)

Level 3: Teacher will assist the students to do the work (p. 10)

Assessment Method:

Observation while students are on task

Give students blocks individually or in pairs. Introduce a story context: Saman White board
had 23 blocks and Afroza had 21 blocks. How many blocks they had altogether? Marker

Main teaching points:

Activities “WE DO” – Teacher/student interaction and/or students working
together

Ask students to split both the numbers and take out the required number of 10s
and 1s blocks.

Guide students to first add the blocks of tens and then

ones blocks and then add the tens and ones together to find the answer.

Continue by giving more story contexts of different kinds or extending the same
context.

Give them a Problem Solving andApplication Students will solve problems

related to addition of 2-digit numbers using different strategies ,in Mathematics
class and real life contexts. Process Skill 21+23
