1. What is OBE?
OBE stands for outcome-based education. An educational system that focuses and
organizes to what is essential for all students to know, value, and be able to do to achieve the
desired level of competence at the end of their learning experiences. To make sure that
learning ultimately happens, OBE started from picturing out what is important for students
to be able to do, organizing curriculum appropriate for instruction and thereafter assess the
students’ performance. It is designed to fit education with actual employment and students
are competitive not only for local employment but as well as for global employment.
2. Give the 4 basic principles of OBE (by Spady)?
The four (4) basic principles of OBE, by Spady, are:
a. Clarity of focus
b. Designing down
c. High expectations
d. Expanded Opportunities
3. Why shift to OBE?
Nowadays, technologies are one of the emerging trends and had a tremendous impact
on the education. This impact requires education to shift and OBE goes well with it by
planning, implementing and assessing of curriculum that fits best to the students/learners.
Educational institutions going with the trend remains on top of these changes will mean
growth and success for higher learning moving forward. Moreover, understanding of these
trends can help create more effective learning environments which is beneficial to both the
institution and the students/learners. Hence, it is essential to shift from traditional education
to OBE or outcome-based education
4. How to adopt OBE?
To adopt OBE, the proper authority who is implementing educational memorandums
and the like must be committed in developing competency based learning standards in
compliance with existing international standards that is applicable to achieve quality and enable
a more effective integration of the intellectual disciplines, ethics and values that are associated
with liberal education.
