Survey

The 5th lab involves performing Real Time Kinematic (RTK) surveys with a professional GNSS receiver to obtain trajectory data. RTK provides positioning accuracy at the centimeter level. Students will collect RTK data along two trajectories, T1 and T2, both clockwise and counter-clockwise. They will also collect trajectory data using smartphone apps to later compare with the RTK data. The goals are to gain experience with RTK surveys and analyze the accuracy of smartphone position data compared to the RTK positions.

5th LAB: On field measurements – RTK SURVEY

AA 2022/2023 – Positioning and Location Based Services

Marianna Alghisi, Ludovico Biagi
The focus of the practice is to perform on-field Real Time Kinematic survey with a professional GNSS
receiver (Stonex S900A). RTK consists in a continuous acquisition of points by the GNSS receiver at
a given rate (@1Hz), in order to obtain the trajectory.
The accuracy of RTK survey with a professional receiver is typically at the centimeter level. this
technology processes:
- Code and phase observations collected by the antenna from the in line of sight satellites.
- Phase corrections obtained from the nearest permanent station via internet connection.
The presence of obstacles, such as buildings or vegetation, affects the quality of the positioning.
In this laboratory we will test two different trajectories (T1, T2):

The final goal of the lab is to compare the RTK trajectory obtained with the professional instrument
with the one that we can obtain with our smartphone with Matlab mobile application, that allows
to create a dataset containing the positions of the receiver with a certain rate over an unique
session.
Important. Install on a smartphone an app that can track, store and export the coordinates of
recorded positions. There are a lot of app that can perform this task (for Android, iOS and
Windows) and you can choose your preferred one. Our suggestion is to use Matlab app. At least
one app per group.

Naming convention for RTK results files:

20221115_gX_sY (RTK)

Where X = group number and Y = 1, 2, 3, 4 (session number)

Each group will have a receiver and will work the sessions in the following order:

Group 1, 3, 5
RTK on T1 clockwise (S1)
RTK on T1 counter clockwise (S2)
RTK on T2 clockwise (S3)
RTK on T2 counter clockwise (S4)
Group 2, 4
RTK on T2 clockwise (S3)
RTK on T2 counter clockwise (S4)
RTK on T1 clockwise (S1)
RTK on T1 counter clockwise (S2)

Guidelines for each one session

To measure the kinematic trajectory:

- switch on the receiver
- set the correct configuration on the receiver for kinematic trajectory (listen to Marianna
Alghisi / Ludovico Biagi explanation
- wait in the starting point to fix the initial ambiguity
- measure the assigned trajectory
- when arrived at the end turn off the receiver

Please use also a smartphone app that can track, store and export the coordinates of our position.
There are a lot of app that can perform this task (for Android, iOS and Windows) and you can
choose your preferred one. Our suggestion is to use Matlab app.
Data analysis part (to be completed)

Workflow:
- Import RTK and mobile phone trajectories
- Plot the measurements
- Write a script to estimate the errors of the smartphones trajectories with respect to the RTK.
For each smartphone point find the nearest RTK point (Euclidean distance).
- Produce plots of errors for each smartphone dataset, and print the statistics (mean, max,
min, STD).
