Additional guidelines for APA headings

1. Double-space all text, including the headings.

2. Use the same font for headings and body text (e.g., Times New Roman 12pt.).
3. Don't label headings with numbers or letters.
4. Don't add extra “enters” above or below heading

5. An APA format sample essay consists of a title page, abstract, actual

essay, references and appendices with each section separated by a
page break. Each page of the essay consists of a running head and
page number. An APA essay must be typed in 12-point Times New
Roman font.

6. The title page in an APA essay consists of the title, author’s name and
institution. It should be at the centre of the page and should not be
italicized, underlined or bolded. The title page also consists of an author
note which identifies the department of the author and institution
affiliation along with any changes to it. For students writing
dissertations, theses and class papers, including the author note is not
mandatory.

7. Abstract must briefly summarize the essay using 150 to 200 words. The
word “Abstract” in the title must be centre aligned. The content of the
abstract must be left aligned with no indentation of the first line.

8. The actual content of the essay must start with title of the essay. It
must be centre aligned and not bolded. The content of the essay should
be left aligned. The different sections of the essay must be clearly
distinguished using headings and sub-headings. The first line of each
paragraph must be indented by 0.5″ from the left margin.
9. The references and appendices must be on separate pages and should
have their title centre aligned. Referencing, both in-text and in reference
list, must strictly to adhere to the rules of APA citation style.

19. If you’re writing academically, chances are you’ve been tasked

with writing a paper that follows APA style. Although there’s a learning
curve involved with adhering to APA style, it’s possible to learn the
basics so you can turn in your assignments.
20. What Is APA Style?
21. APA is the official academic style of the American Psychological
Association. This style was created in 1929 when a group of
professionals worked together to devise a set of style rules for scientific
writing as a means of making these documents easier to read and
understand.
22. If an assignment indicates APA style, you will need to adhere to
these style rules. These guidelines ensure that your document is
consistent and uniform with elements such as punctuation, headings
and subheadings, abbreviations, numbers, tables and figures and
citations.
23. Main Sections of a Document
24. APA style dictates the format of the main sections of a document.
25. The title page includes a running head, the author’s name and the
school.

27. The abstract is a succinct summary of the document. APA style

dictates that abstracts be no more than 250 words, although some
instructors give leeway regarding the length.
28. The main body of the document is the text of the essay or report.
Some reports are divided into separate sections.
29. Your reference section follows the body. It includes a list of
references you cited in your document.
30. How to Reference APA Style
31. In-text citations appear within the text, identifying any information
you cite. APA format for in-text citations includes the author’s name and
the date of the publication.
32. The reference page always begins on a new page with the title
“References” centered at the top. Include all entries in alphabetical
order, and each entry’s first line begins at the left margin, and additional
lines are indented. Place titles of newspapers, magazines, journals and
books in italics, and double-space the reference section.

35. Double-check that all of your sources appear as both in-text

citations and in the reference section.
36. Use an APA Sample Paper
37. An APA style example can be helpful if you’re learning this style
and trying to apply it to a writing assignment. Many schools and
universities maintain resource web pages with APA samples to show
students how to follow this style.

40. If you’re struggling with creating APA citations and references,

use a citation machine to check your work. You simply fill in the citation
and click a button, and the tool tells you if you made any errors.
41. Consider hiring an academic editor to check your work after you
finish writing. The editor can find and correct errors to make sure your
document adheres to APA.

The text begins here. Notice that the page numbers are centered in the footer at the bottom of each
page (except for the half-title page—no page number is displayed on the half-title page). Pages prior to
the half-title page use lowercase Roman numerals (i.e., i, ii, iii). Starting with the first page of Chapter 1,
use Arabic numerals (i.e., 2, 3, 4); the first page of Chapter 1 displays the page number 2 and the pages
following are numbered in sequence through the reference material to the end of the document.
Proceed with each additional page of text with continuous page numbering. The page number should be
centered 3/4” from the bottom of the page on all pages (this is the default setting; no adjustments are
needed). Page margins should be as follows: Left – 1” Right – 1” Top – 1” except the first page of each
chapter, which is 2” and the half-title page, which is 4’’ Bottom – 1” All written material (text, tables,
graphs, and illustrative materials) must fit within these margins. Headings should not fall on the bottom
of a page. To avoid headings falling at the bottom of a page, select the heading and the paragraph that
follows and apply the “keep lines together” and “keep with next” paragraph settings. Whenever
possible, have tables, figures, and graphs fall on a single page. When needed, apply “keep lines
together” and “keep with next” settings to achieve this goal. Consider moving long tables that span
multiple pages into an appendix. Footnotes (if any) should appear at the bottom of the page in which
they are used and placed in the footer of the page. Please follow current APA edition style guidelines.
