1. What is the significance of the proclamation of Philippine Independence in 1898?


5 pts.

- The Philippine Independence in 1898 plays a huge role in the Philippine History. It
symbolizes the freedom of the Filipinos from the hands of the Spaniards, one of the
colonizers that colonized the country for over 333 years. The proclamation of
independence of the Philippines in which Filipino revolutionary forces under the
supervision of General Emilio Aguinaldo have proclaimed the sovereignty and
independence of the Philippine Islands from the colonizer country, Spain after Spain was
defeated at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.

2. How was the transition of governance from the Spaniards to the Americans made
possible in the Philippines? 5 pts.

- After the Spanish-American War, the Spanish government then gave up the Philippines
to the United Sates in the 1898 Treaty of Paris that was signed on December 10, 1898
and became effective on April 11, 1899. The transition of governance from the Spaniards
to the Americans was made possible in the Philippines because unlike the Spaniards, the
Americans gave the idea of "the Philippines is for the Filipinos" courtesy of Gov. Taft which
provided the Filipinos the Philippine Bill of 1902 which gave the Filipinos the right to be
represented by two Filipino resident commissioners in the United State Congress, Free
education across the country, introducing new religion, Protestantism, and provided new
industries to different parts of the Philippines and also the Improvement in Transportation
and Communication.

3. What has transpired in the Malolos Congress, which brought about the
establishment of the First Philippine Republic? 5 pts.

The notable achievements of the Malolos Congress are (1) September 29, 1898 was the
day that ratified the declaration of the Philippine independence from the Spaniards on
June 12, 1898 and was held in Kawit Cavite. (2) The Philippines was allowed to borrow
PHP 20 million from banks for government expenses because the passage of a law, (3)
Established Universidad Literatura de Filipinas and also other schools across the country
(4) Drafting the Philippine Constitution and (5) Declaring war against the United States
happened on June 12, 1899. The constitution was drafted and after some revisions which
is mainly due to the Apolinario Mabini's objection, the final draft was presented to
Aguinaldo in which paved its way in becoming the First Philippine Republic.
4. Why is the Malolos Republic considered in history as the first Philippine Republic
and not as Biak na Bato Republic? 5 pts.

- The Malolos Congress have earned its place in Philippine history for only two
achievements: (1) the ratification of the declaration of independence on September 29,
1898 and (2) the framing of the Malolos Constitution in which was promulgated by
President Aguinaldo on September 29, 1898. It also has an elite background by producing
a supreme law distinguished for its democratic and pluralist ideals.

5. In your own words, describe the government under America in the Philippines
from Military to civilian government? (150 words only). 20 pts.

- The colonization of the United States have paved its way in helping the Philippines to
establish our own government. The United States Military Government ruled the country
since 1898 until 1902. The power was then passed to the civilian after the development
of the country. Various laws and missions were possible to provide opportunities to the
filipinos such as the Jones Law of 1916 and the OSROX Mission. The American
introduced free education to the country in which they have established school all
throughout the country to provide education to the Filipinos. Teachers who came from
the United States have arrived and was known as Thomasites. It was then that the
formation of the Philippine Government come to its place. One goal of the americans is
"to educate, to train in the science of self-government". Not too long, the first Philippine
Republic was formed.

6. In your own words, describe the Japanese government imposed in the


Philippines? (150 words only). 20 pts.

- On December 8, 1941 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and declared war against the United
States. The Japanese then attacked the Philippines hours after bombing the Pearl Harbor
and had Manila to be an Open City. The Japanese attacked all throughout the country that
lead to the end of the American Occupation. The Japanese Military forces declared martial
law in the Philippines which was widely imposed. The Japanese have established rules
and convincing the people that it was useless to resist the Japanese rule. The Puppet
Government, HUKBALAHAP (Hukbong Bayan Laban sa mga Hapon) was established.
The Bataan Death March was consisted about the U.S.-Filipino Army who was
surrendered by the leader, U.S. General Edward King Jr. due to starvation and disease.
A new republic was established having Jose P. Laurel as the president and Benigno
Aquino Sr. and Ramon Anancena as Vice-Presidents.
