CHAPTER III

CHAPTER III
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, RECOMMENDATION

Summary

Practice teaching is undeniably the most challenging part of the college

life of education students because it requires a lot of courage, dedication, and
responsibility that a practice teacher must fulfill. When reflecting on this semester
of student teaching, there have been so many challenges and so much lessons
that the practice teacher has learned. She has been pushed beyond her comfort
zone, and she has grown as a teacher immensely.

During her student teaching experience, she spent a lot of time preparing

each daily lesson plan. She worked hard to research different ways to present
the lesson effectively. She looked for activities that her students would enjoy, and
she made sure that she had all of the materials and other things that she needed
before the class starts. Even though, there were still things that went failed.
Technology would fail. Students would complete activities quicker than planned.
Or students would require much more time and explanation than expected.

As such, she realized that she needed to be prepared as much as

possible, but, more importantly, she needed to prepare to be more flexible and
accurate at the same time. You will never know what’s going to come up or what
will catch the students’ attention. When creating lessons, remember that you
need to be prepared for changes and on some instant difficulties. Figure out
alternative activities in order to help your day go as smoothly as possible and
allow your students to gain much from the lessons.

The student teacher also found that student teaching was the perfect time
to think outside of the box and try different things. If they didn’t work, they didn’t
work. At least, she did try them in a safe environment. And in the process, she
got to work on vital skills for teaching, such as classroom management. Luckily,
she had an awesome cooperating teacher who set her free to try and explore
new things. Of course, it was always helpful to have her cooperating teacher

reviewed her lesson plans and advised her on things that she could do to
improve her ideas to ensure that they were viable in the classroom.

She learned from his cooperating teacher that confidence is crucial for a
great student teaching experience. Students need to see that their teacher knows what
she is talking about. They need a teacher that demands respect. When she first started
as a student teacher, she was awkward and unsure of herself. She wasn’t sure what her
cooperating teacher would think, and she is worried about how her students would
perceive her who didn’t look old enough to teach in the first place.

As she fell into her groove and gained more confidence as a teacher, she
found that her students not only respected her but felt more comfortable talking
to her, too. Confidence meant she could be herself while still demanding respect
from her students and colleagues.

In addition to that, as the semester is winding down, she has been truly
experiencing one of the best parts of teaching, the relationships that are formed.
She became so sad when she left her students, and she was reminded of why
she loved this experience so much. As teachers, we spend the majority of the
day with our students. While they may drive us crazy many days, it is inevitable
that there will be relationships formed and connections made that leave lasting
impressions. She will miss her students and the adventures that they brought to
her each day.

She has learned the value of making these connections from day one. Her
relationships with her students have been building each day, and it’s amazing to
see how far they’ve come. She also learned how intentionally forming these
relationships plays such an important role in the environment and community of
the classroom. Because she was able to form these connections, getting to know
her students on an individual level, she was able to see more success, more
engagement, and more collaboration in her classroom. She has built mutual
respect and rapport within her classroom, and she saw the benefit of these
relationships in several ways. First, she had students simply told him how a great
teacher she was and how they wanted her to stay. This was so incredible to
hear, and she was so touched by this comment. Also, she saw students opening
up to her and instinctively coming to her with their comments and questions. She

Page | 52
loved watching these grow with her relationships formed. They truly considered
her as their teacher and trusted her and her abilities enough to come to her
rather than to her cooperating teacher.

Generally, she knew that these were developed from her relationships
with them and the openness that she tried to instill from the very beginning.

Conclusion

To conclude this narrative report on this practice teaching, the author can
say that the significance of this experience is for her to fathom how challenging it
is. Stress is inexorable for being a knowledge provider. However, this still shows
that EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER. She will both feel the pleasure and
pain of your work. She will also learn that putting your skills into applications is
far more precious than learning all the theories in school.

From this experience as well, she learned a lot of things about the school
and the amount of work that teachers need to do in order to have a successful
class. She learned that teachers need to ensure that students learned the
concepts very well. Her second teaching experience taught her a lot about
herself and what it means to be a teacher. For example, she knew that coming
up with the lessons and instructional materials were not easy, so she’s glad that
she was able to have this experience to prepare her for it in the future. She also
learned that she must fall in love with her chosen career in order to enjoy it and
to have fulfillment after she finished a certain task.

Furthermore, she has learned how important it is to accept that everybody

is not a perfect teacher, and neither are the cooperating teachers. Everybody has
things to learn, and her student teaching experience has taught her how to learn
from her mistakes. She learned a lot of things from her cooperating teacher and
from the students almost every day, and being open to this, it allowed her to
grow, adapt, and think. Having these experiences is the true life of a teacher!

With being honest about her mistakes and imperfections, she was able to
form stronger connections with the students. This is another takeaway from the
semester. She has always valued forming strong relationships with her students

Page | 53
in order to create the best learning environment for them, but she was able to
truly see the value of this throughout the semester. Being the first placement
where he was able to be with the students every day of the week, she was able
to see the growth of her relationships with them from day to day over the course
of the semester. She was honestly intimidated working with older, gifted students
coming in, but she worked hard to break down their walls and get to know them
as individuals. She loved getting to know each of her students’ likes, dislike,
strengths, and weaknesses. She believes that this has helped her better to teach
them and has made her classroom a happier place to learn.

Finally, she realized that teaching is a challenge and a joy.  It is also a

lifelong process of reflecting and making necessary adjustments.  To be a good
teacher, you have to love teaching.  She loves the uniqueness of each day and
every child. She is very excited about the opportunity to be a part of the lives of
students as they grow intellectually, socially, and physically.  It is a great joy and
privilege to impact the lives of children in these ways.

Therefore, student teaching was a great experience. It has ups and

downs, but she became a better teacher by working to make the most of her
experience and looking for opportunities to learn. Generally, she really enjoyed
her student teaching experience despite all of its hardships and challenges. She
found himself in very low points but also in very high points throughout the
semester, but she can clearly see how she has grown as a teacher, and she
feels as though she can confidently walk into whatever classroom she will be
teaching in the next years.

Recommendation

The practice teacher wants to recommend her narrative report to the

future student teachers to serve as their guide while they are having their voyage
in their practice teaching. She believes that her experiences and the things that
were taught to her by her cooperating teacher written in this narrative report
might help them in their journey. Every step of the way has been difficult for her

Page | 54
trying to leave her comfort zone, but through proper guidance, each step became
lighter and easier.

The best advice she can give to his co-future educators is to be fearless
as student teachers. Don’t be afraid to handle different types of students. Don’t
be afraid to ask your cooperating teacher for feedback and suggestions. When
observing you in action, he or she will notice things that you hadn’t noticed
before. Maybe you use too many fillers, look at the floor too often, or stand in one
place the entire time. Your cooperating teacher can point out these things to you,
so you can make the necessary changes to improve. But more than just asking
for feedback, you need to have a good attitude about the information that you
receive. The author found that when she was teachable and willing to listen to
criticism, she saw greater improvements.

Finally, don’t lose hope and don’t let the hardships and struggles ruin your
passion in teaching. Always remember that there is no easy profession. Take it
as a challenge and be firm enough to surpass all the problems you might
encounter. Of course, always praise and thank God for His gracefulness. Pray for
the strength, knowledge, wisdom, and courage to face all the circumstances in
life with a smile on your face. Let God be the Director of your life. Have
confidence, believe in yourself, and make the most out of it!
