Problem Set For Acceleration

1) The acceleration of a motorcycle going from 0 to 70 mph in 5 seconds is 14 mph/s. 2) The Honda Accord traveling at a constant velocity of 50 km/h for 20 seconds does not have a constant acceleration, since its speed is not changing. 3) Both individuals accelerating from 0 to their final speeds in the same amount of time have the same acceleration, despite different final speeds.

ACCELERATION PROBLEMS

What is the acceleration of a motorcycle moving on a straight path when the speed goes from 0
to 70 miles per hour in 5 seconds ?

What is the acceleration of a Honda Accord with a constant velocity of 50 km/h for 20

seconds? Does the car have a constant acceleration?

If the Honda has a constant velocity, this means that the speed is constant and the car is going
on a straight path.
Because the speed is constant, the car is not accelerating.
The driver probably put the car on cruise control with a speed of 50 km/h for 20 seconds.
So a = 0.
There is a world of difference between constant acceleration and constant velocity.
Constant acceleration means that the speed is changing. However, it is changing by the same
amount.
For example from 10 km/h to 20 km/h, then from 20 km/h to 30 km/h, etc.
The change in speed is always 10 km/h, so this is a constant acceleration.
Constant velocity on the other hand means that the speed is not changing!
Since the speed is not changing at all, the car does not have constant acceleration.

You can speed up from 0 to 25 feet/s in 25 seconds and your brother can speed up from 0 to 6
feet/s in 6 seconds. Who is faster?

Each second, your speed can increase by 1 foot/second.

If it is hard to see, you can always use the acceleration formula
Your acceleration =
25 feet/s 25 s

Your acceleration = 1 foot/s2

Your brother's acceleration =
6 feet/s 6 s

Your brother's acceleration = 1 foot/s2

Therefore, neither you nor your brother is faster.

A car starts from a stoplight and is traveling with a velocity of 10 m/sec east in 20 seconds.  What
is the acceleration of the car?
1. First we identify the information that we are given in the problem:
vf - 10 m/sec
vo - 0 m/sec
time - 20 seconds
2. Then we insert the given information into the acceleration formula:
a = (vf - vo)/t
a = (10 m/sec - 0 m/sec)/20 sec
3. Solving the problem gives an acceleration value of 0.5 m/sec 2.

A ball rolls down a ramp for 15 seconds.  If the initial velocity of the ball was 0.8 m/sec and the
final velocity was 7 m/sec, what was the acceleration of the ball ? 0.413 m/s²

A meteoroid changed velocity from 1.0 km/s to 1.8 km/s in 0.03 seconds. What is the
acceleration of the meteoroid? 26.7 km/ s²
A ball is rolled at a velocity of 12 m/sec.  After 36 seconds, it comes to a stop.  What is the
acceleration of the ball? -0.33 m/s²

A race car accelerates from 10m/s to 30m/s in a time interval 2s. Determine its acceleration.

-For 10s, the velocity of a car that travels with a constant acceleration, changes
from 10m/s to 30m/s. How far does the car travel?

-A cyclist accelerates from 0 m/s to 8 m/s in 3 seconds. What is his acceleration ? Is this
acceleration higher than that of a car which accelerates from 0 to 30 m/s in 8 seconds?
-If a Ferrari, with an initial velocity of 10 m/s, accelerates at a rate of 50 m/s 2 for 3 seconds, what
will its final velocity be?

SPEED AND VELOCITY

How long will your trip take (in hours) if you travel 350 km at an average speed of 80 km/hr?

How far (in meters) will you travel in 3 minutes running at a rate of 6 m/s?
