In a growing and 1 world, a 2 is an efficient way to create
space for homes and offices. But so many of these modern 3 landmarks are not
what they seem. In the race to construct the tallest building, architects are using empty spires so
that the structures 4 much less efficient uses of space. The Burj Khalifa in
Dubai appears to be 828 metres tall, but the top 30% has no 5 .
The race for the tallest building has only really become an issue in the last 30 years. The Empire
State Building, at 381 metres high, spent more than four decades as the tallest building in the
world due to a 6 competition. In 1973, however, the World Trade Center
Towers in New York became the tallest building, followed by the Willis Tower in Chicago in 1974.
The building of skyscrapers since then has been rapid and constant. Asian countries in particular
have been creating many of these buildings, with the 452-metre Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur
and the 508-metre Taipei 101 building in Taiwan. Now, the Gulf States have taken over, with the
Burj Khalifa in Dubai currently the world’s tallest building, and the next champion is likely to be
in Saudi Arabia. The Jeddah Tower, which is scheduled to be completed in 2020, will be a

one kilometre high. How much of that will be usable space remains to
be seen.
