1. INTRODUCTION : TERMINOLOGY & DEFINITION

A storm drain, storm sewer (US), stormwater drain (Australia and New
Zealand) or drainage well system (UK) or simply a drain or drain system is
designed to drain excess rain and ground water from paved streets, parking
lots, sidewalks, and roofs. Storm drains vary in design from small residential
dry wells to large municipal systems. They are fed by street gutters on most
motorways, freeways and other busy roads, as well as towns in areas which
experience heavy rainfall, flooding and coastal towns which experience
regular storms. Many storm drainage systems are designed to drain the
storm water, untreated, into rivers or streams.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ROAD DRAINAGE SYSTEM

GENERAL CONSIDERATION
1. THE EROSIVE/DESTRUCTIVE POWER OF FLOWING WATER INCREASES EXPONENTIALLY AS ITS
VELOCITY INCREASES. THEREFORE, WATER MUST NOT ALLOWED TO DEVELOP SUFFICIENT
VOLUME OR VELOCITY SO AS TO CAUSE RAPIDLY DAMAGE A ROAD PAVEMENT AND
FORMATION, EXCESSIVE WEAR ALONG DRAINS OR ALONG EXPOSED RUNNING SURFACES,
CUTS OR FILLS.

2. CONTROLLING STORM WATER RUN-OFF AND GROUNDWATER IS A FUNDAMENTAL PART OF


MAINTAINING AN ACCESSIBLE ROAD, MINIMISING MAINTENANCE COSTS, AND MANAGING
EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL.

3. THE PRESENCE OF EXCESS WATER OR MOISTURE WITHIN THE ROADWAY WILL ADVERSELY
AFFECT THE ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS WITH WHICH IT WAS
CONSTRUCTED. CUT SLOPE OR EMBANKMENT FILL FAILURES, ROAD SURFACE EROSION,
AND WEAKENED SUBGRADES FOLLOWED BY A MASS FAILURE ARE ALL PRODUCTS OF
INADEQUATE OR POORLY DESIGNED DRAINAGE.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
MAIN CRITERIA FOR DESIGNING ROAD DRAINAGE SYSTEM :
A ROAD DRAINAGE SYSTEM MUST SATISFY CERTAIN MAIN CRITERIA IF IT IS TO
BE EFFECTIVE THROUGHOUT ITS DESIGN LIFE :

 THE ROAD DRAINAGE SYSTEM CANNOT BE DESIGNED TO SUIT WORST


CONDITIONS THAT MIGHT OCCUR ON EXTREMELY RARE OCCASIONS
BECAUSE IT IS TOO COSTLY TO DO SO.

 IT MUST ALLOW FOR A MINIMUM OF DISTURBANCE OF THE NATURAL


DRAINAGE PATERN.

 IT MUST DRAIN SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE WATER AWAY FROM THE


ROADWAY AND DISSIPATE IT IN A WAY THAT PREVENTS EXCESSIVE
COLLECTION OF WATER IN UNSTABLE AREAS AND SUBSEQUENT
DOWNSTREAM EROSION.

THE DESIGN OF DRAINAGE STRUCTURES IS BASED ON THE


HYDROLOGICAL AND HYDRAULIC ANALYSIS - THE FORMER DEALS
WITH THE OCCURRENCE AND FORM OF WATER IN THE NATURAL
ENVIRONMENT (PRECIPITATION, STREAM FLOW, SOIL MOISTURE, ETC.)
WHILE THE LATTER DEALS WITH THE ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF
FLUIDS IN MOTION.
HYDROLOGICAL ANALYSIS

DISCHARGE ESTIMATION FOR WATERWAY STRUCTURES


HYDROLOGICAL ANALYSIS FOR ESTIMATING RUN-OFF :
 HYDROLOGICAL ANALYSIS IS THE FIRST IMPORTANT STEP IN THE
DESIGN OF ROAD DRAINAGE STRUCTURES. SUCH AN ANALYSIS IS
NECESSARY TO DETERMINE THE FLOW RATE, RUNOFF OR
DISCHARGE THAT THE DRAINAGE FACILITY WILL BE REQUIRED TO
TAKE. THE DESIGN DISCHARGE IS A “HYDRAULIC LOAD”
ANALOGOUS TO THE LOAD IN A STRUCTURAL DESIGN.

 WATERWAY STRUCTURE IS SIZED ACCORDING TO THE PROBABILITY


OF OCCURRENCE OF AN EXPECTED PEAK DISCHARGE DURING THE
DESIGN LIFE OF THE STRUCTURE. THIS, OF COURSE, IS RELATED TO
THE INTENSITY AND DURATION OF RAINFALL EVENTS OCCURRING
NOT ONLY IN THE DIRECT VICINITY OF THE STRUCTURE, BUT ALSO
UPSTREAM OF THE STRUCTURE.

 IN ADDITION TO CONSIDERING INTENSITY AND DURATION OF A PEAK


RAINFALL EVENT, THE FREQUENCY, OR HOW OFTEN THE DESIGN
MAXIMUM MAY BE EXPECTED TO OCCUR, IS ALSO A
CONSIDERATION AND IS MOST OFTEN BASED ON THE LIFE OF THE
ROAD, TRAFFIC, AND CONSEQUENCES OF FAILURE.

1.24 PRECAST BOX CULVERTS
1.24.1 Culvert Type
Precast reinforced concrete box culverts shall preferably be obtained from the SCIB Concrete
Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. or approved equivalent. The precast box culverts type shall use
Standard Size Box Culverts with Dry Weather Flow with details of all dimensions to comply
with the details shown on the Drawings.

The Standard Size Box Culverts shall be designed to cater for backfill superimposed dead
load not exceeding 4 m depth (inclusive of pavement) plus 45 units of HB vehicle live loads.

1.24.2 Bedding Material


Precast box culverts shall be bedded on concrete bedding with the dimensions shown on the
Drawings. The concrete bedding shall be of grade 25/20. The bedding shall be laid on a layer
of 50mm thick lean concrete of grade 15/20.

1.24.3 Installation Of Precast Box Culverts


In addition to the third paragraph of Sub-Section 3.9.4 of SSRW, 1:3 cement mortar which
shall conform to the requirements of Sub-Section 3.5.2.2, shall be spread on top surface of the
bedding in order to level and smooth the surface condition just before laying the precast box
culverts.

1.24.4 Stacking Of Box Culvert Inverts And Lids


Box culvert inverts shall preferably be stacked uniformly on level ground. Lids shall be
supported with timber bearers at the both ends and centre.

1.25 PRECAST PIPE CULVERTS
1.25.1 Culvert Type
Precast reinforced concrete pipe culverts conform to the requirements of M.S. 881 and shall
preferably be obtained from the SCIB Concrete Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. or approved
equivalent. The precast pipe culverts used in this Contract shall be Spun pipe culvert with
minimum of Z Class (AS1342 - 1973) or equivalent with H Class (BS5911 - 1981) of 1200 mm
and 1800 mm size (nominal internal diameter) with details of all dimensions to comply with the
details shown on the Drawings.

1.25.2 Bedding Material


Precast pipe culverts shall be bedded on bedding (type A) with the dimensions shown on the
Drawings. The bedding type A shall be concrete of grade 25/20, and the bedding shall be laid
on a layer of 50 mm thick lean concrete of grade 15/20.

1.25.3 Installation Of Precast Pipe Culverts


Installation of precast pipe culverts shall be in accordance with the provisions of Sub-Section
3.9.4 of the SSRW.

1.25.4 Butt Ended Pipe Culverts with Cast In-Situ Concrete Collars
Cast in-situ concrete collars shall be grade 25/20 concrete and shall be suitably reinforced all
in accordance with Section 9 of the SSRW. The collar dimensions shall comply with the details
shown on the Drawings. The method of construction shall follow that described in Sub-Section
3.8.4.2 of the SSRW for butt ended pipe culverts except for the exclusion of precast concrete
collars.

1.26 PILING WORKS
1.26.1 General
Piles shall be of R.C. Square Piles for R.C. cast in-situ box culverts, R.C. pipe culverts, R.C.
crossing and R.C. open drains as specified on the Drawings.

All the R.C. square piles shall be driven until the length or set specified by the S.O. has been
achieved, whichever come first. If the pile achieves the specified set before reaching the
contract length or if the pile reaches the contract length without achieving the specified set, the
Contractor shall refer the matter immediately to the S.O. and shall carry out any further driving
required by the S.O. until the specified set is finally obtained.

1.26.2 R.C. Square Piles


The works comprises the supply of all labour, materials, plant, equipment, etc. necessary for
the installation of 200 mm x 200 mm R.C. Square Piles Class M for proposed R.C. cast in-situ
box culverts and R.C. pipe culverts, and 150 mm x 150 mm R.C. Square Piles Class RCS1 for
proposed 1.2 m wide R.C. crossing, 1.5 m and 2.0 m wide R.C. open drains.

The whole of the works and materials are to be in accordance with the MS 1314 Part 3 : 2004
- Precast Concrete Piles : Part 3 : Precast Reinforced Concrete Square Piles (RC Piles) –
Class M, Class J and Class S; and MS 1314 Part 6 : 2004 - Precast Concrete Piles : Part 6 :
Small Reinforced Concrete Square Piles – Small Piles Class RCS-1 and Class RCS-2.

The Contractor shall install 1 no. of 200 mm x 200 mm R.C. test pile at each location of R.C.
box culverts and R.C. pipe culverts, all as specified by the S.O.. Furthermore all the test piles
shall be used as working piles.

The QUALITY CONTROL for Road Drainage Works is drawn up to ensure that the
material used and the work carried out are in accordance with the specification
and to establish good and acceptable practice.
