Assignment I

This document contains a 10 question assignment on kinematic analysis of mechanisms for a Theory of Machines course. The questions cover topics like determining the degree of freedom of kinematic pairs and linkages, classifying four-bar linkages using Grashof's law, calculating velocities and accelerations of points in slider-crank and other linkages using instant center methods, and analyzing inversions of the slider-crank mechanism. Students are asked to determine velocities, accelerations, and perform kinematic analysis on various linkages and mechanisms.

Theory of Machines (MECH 2013)

B.Tech – Mechatronics – IV semester

Assignment I
Submission deadline: 25 February 2023
1. What do you mean by degree of freedom (DOF) of a kinematic pair? How pairs are
classified? Give examples. (10, CO1)
2. Determine the DOF for following chains and find whether they are mechanisms, structures
or superstructures: (10, CO1)

3. Define Grashof’s law. State how it is helpful in classifying the four link mechanisms into
different types. (10, CO1)
4. Figure shows some four link mechanisms in which the figures indicate the dimensions in
standard units of length. Determine the type of each mechanism with necessary explanation:
(10, CO1)
5. Discuss the inversions of slider-crank mechanism. Discuss two applications of these
inversions. (10, CO1)
6. In a four-link mechanism, the crank AB rotates at 36 rad/s. The lengths of the links are AB=
200mm, BC= 400mm, CD= 450mm and AD= 600mm. AD is fixed link. At the instant when
AB is at right angles to AD, determine the velocity of: (20, CO2)
i) The midpoint of link BC.
ii) A point on the link CD, 100mm from the pin connecting links CD and AD.
7. In the mechanism shown in figure below, O and A are fixed. CD = 200 mm, OA = 60 mm,
AC = 50 mm and OB (crank) = 150 mm. OAD = 90⁰. Determine the velocity of the slider D
for counterclockwise rotation of OB at 80 rpm. (20, CO2)

8. Figure shows a six-link mechanism. For the given configuration, determine the velocity of
the slider D by I-centre method if OA rotates at 120 rpm. (20, CO2)

9. A crank and rocker mechanism ABCD has the following dimensions: AB= 0.75m,
BC=1.25m, CD= 1m, AD= 1.5m and CF= 500mm. F is a point on the coupler link BC. AD
is the fixed link. F lies on BC produced. Crank AB has an angular velocity of 20.94 rad/s
counterclockwise and a deceleration of 280 rad/s2 at the instant <DAB = 60º. Find the: (20,
CO2)
i) Instantaneous linear acceleration of C and F.
ii) Instantaneous angular velocities and accelerations of links BC and CD.
10. A Whitworth quick-return mechanism has been shown in figure below. The dimensions of
the links are OP (crank) = 240 mm, OA = 150 mm, AR = 165 mm and RS = 430 mm. The
crank OP has an angular velocity of 2.5 rad/s and an angular deceleration of 2 rad/s2 at the
instant. Determine the: (20, CO2)
(i) Acceleration of the slider S
(ii) Angular acceleration of links AR and RS.
