effectively in order to convey a message?
In the poem, ”Away Melancholy”, by Stevie Smith set in a sad, and beautiful world, the
persona suffers through severe sadness, causing them to question the world around them.
The poet seeks to banish melancholy from the minds of its readers. To convey this message,
Smith uses imagery of nature, human’s morality and contrasting images between animals
and humans.
The visuals of nature’s beauty in the second stanza makes the persona question their
sadness’s existence. The images of the 4 elements “rivers”, “trees”, “wind” and “fire”
combined with the ‘g’ sounds to create a sense of continuity in the mind of the reader. This
urges them to enjoy the sight rather than indulging in their sadness. It also helps the reader
to understand how petty their melancholy is compared to the running ecosystem of nature.
Causing them to get rid of their sadness that is tormenting them.
The images of human’s morality helps the readers understand the world around them. The
poet describes how humans, when dying still, “heave up an eye above/ cries, Love, love”. This
highlights an important feature of the world, that even in their darkest time, humans would
not want to hurt somebody else. It shows the unbreakable commitment to love seen on earth,
through the serious emotional strength in humanity. Even Though, the world around them
might look empty, though human’s capacity for the belief of love should wash melancholy
clear. Giving the reader more strength to banish melancholy.
