Phrases
A phrase is a group of words in a sentence that does not have a
subject nor a verb.
A phrase cannot express a complete thought on its own because it
can either lack a subject and a verb.

Examples:
On the table - no subject and verb
Finished the task - no subject
Danie and his friends- no verb

Noun Phrase consists of a noun and other related words (usually


modifiers and determiners) which modify the noun. It functions like a
noun in a sentence.

Modifiers- is a word, phrase, or clause that modifies, gives


information or description about another word in the same

Concepts
Examples:
● Della had a weak heart
(The phrase a weak heart is considered a noun phrase, heart is
the noun and weak is a modifier)

● A little boy
(The phrase a little boy is considered a noun phrase, boy is the
noun and little is a modifier)

● The happy puppy


(The phrase the happy puppy is considered a noun phrase,
puppy is the noun and happy is a modifier)

Verb phrase is a combination of the main verb and its auxiliary


(helping verb) in a sentence. Some examples of helping verbs are
the following: am, is, are, be, has, have, do, does, may, might, must,
can, shall and will.
Examples:
● The shot did not scare Biryuk
( The phrase did not scare is a verb phrase, scare is the main verb
and did is the helping verb)

● She had waited for an hour.


( The phrase had waited is a verb phrase, waited is the main
verb and had is the helping verb that shows the tense of the verb)
past perfect tense

● She is running really fast


( The phrase is running is a verb phrase, running is the main verb
and is is the helping verb that shows the tense of the verb) present
tense

Task 1: Differentiate if the underlined words are noun phrases or a

verb phrase write NP on the lines provided if it is a noun phrase and

VP for a verb phrase.
