Who is a scientist ?

A scientist is a person who conducts scientific


research to advance knowledge in an area of
interest. Scientists are motivated to work in
several ways. Many have a desire to understand
why the world is as we see it and how it came to be .
What is Science?

Science is the subject which includes the study


of various experiments performed by a
scientist with all observations and records
included.

Important Events

● Errol York St Aubyn Morrison was born on 21 September 1945.

● In 1982, he pioneered the formation of the Diabetes Association of


the Caribbean, which now has 26 member countries

● president from 1985 to 1987

● its vice president from 1989 to 1991.

● In 1991 he launched the University Diabetes Outreach Project which


now coordinates the activities of the university in relation to diabetes,
organising an annual international conference which attracts
500-1,000 participants from the world over, and which is conducted
by a combined faculty from the Caribbean, Europe, USA, Africa and
Canada
● A research he spanned was from 1979-1999 and yielded over 20
doctoral graduates supervised by him.

● Chair of the IDF North America & the Caribbean Region (1996-2002);
● Pro Vice Chancellor(Graduate Studies), University of the West
Indies(1999-2007);
● President of the University of Technology,Jamaica (2007-2015).
Discoveries

● Endocrinologist and Biochemist who has changed the face of diabetes


in Jamaica, the Caribbean and the world. Professor Morrison's work is
centred around the investigation of medicinal plants used in the
treatment of diabetes mellitus.

● He launched the university diabetes outreach program.

● He played a key role in partnership between the international Diabetes


Federation and PAN American Health Organization.(PAHO/WHO).

● He applied the St.Vincent declaration intervention model to the americans


in the form of the declaring to the americans on diabetes.(DOTA).

● As a biochemist, he has conducted extensive research on indigenous


medicinal plants as potential therapeutic agents Hypertension.
RESULTS

● For this he was awarded the Queen's gold medal to the


British Commonwealth for distinguished service to diabetes
mellitus locally and internationally (2006); and also the
Hellmut Mehnert UNESCO/International Diabetes
Federation(IDF) prize(2011).

● Renown for his philanthropy, research and medical services


he was awarded the Gold Musgrave medal (1998) and was
honoured by the government of Jamaica with the
conferment of the Order of Jamaica(2001).

● He has written over 200 peer reviewed scientific


publications, 20 books and technical reports.

Dr E. Morrison has created a healthy pathway for the critical


health conditions hypertension and diabetes.
