Title: The effectiveness of using the ELSA application in Improving pronunciation in gr

ade 10 students of SMA N 2 Mandor

INTRODUCTION

Pronunciation is one of the most important basic techniques in developing listening and speak
ing skills. This is due to the impact it has, where the incorrect pronunciation of words can giv
e a negative meaning/impression, which can lead to misunderstandings and ineffective comm
unication. (Samad & Aminullah, 2019). Pronunciation affects the first impression that will b
e captured by the interlocutor, where from here the interlocutor can assess our English skills.
Based on other aspects, information is obtained if one of the aspects affecting the pronunciati
on is not correct, namely the use of the mother tongue which they have practiced since childh
ood. According to Sholeh and Muhaji (2015) stated that most students' pronunciation in Ind
onesia is still influenced by their mother tongue. Thus, students find it difficult to speak Engli
sh. The above is also experienced by SMA NEGERI 02 Mandor students, especially in grade
10 students where this is influenced by the area where they live where students come from va
rious ethnic groups which are dominated by Dayak, Malay and Javanese tribes who have diff
erent dialects. This affects their English in speaking where a dialect is characteristic of them.
But some students are quite proficient in English.

Therefore, the researcher conducted interviews to determine what causes students' difficulties
in pronouncing correctly. From the interviews conducted, it was concluded that there was a la
ck of time for students to listen to native speakers and students rarely listened to English. As
a result, students are not used to how native English speakers say words. Technology has bec
ome an extraordinary development in this modern era, especially in the industrial sector. Ther
efore, in improving the quality of human resources to welcome the industrial era 4.0, the IT w
orld needs to be introduced starting from basic education to higher education. (Sidabutar, 20
21)

So it is natural to use technology to support students' self-study by utilizing various media so

urces, the use of technology can help students practice their pronunciation. One of the media
sources that can be utilized in this era is the use of applications that are easily accessed using
mobile phones or computers. On the internet there are many applications that can be used to h
elp students' pronunciation, one of the applications used by researchers is the "ELSA Speak a
pplication" Elsa is an application that can be used to develop students' speaking skills, especia
lly in the pronunciation aspect. The ELSA Speak application is a medium that can support ed
ucation in the 4.0 era. (Samad & Ismail, 2020)

In this millennial era, almost everyone has a cell phone to access the internet as well as stude
nts of SMA NEGERI 02 MANDOR. On average, existing students already have mobile phon
es, so the use of the ELSA application to help improve student pronunciation is directed by re
searchers so that students can easily understand the application. Therefore, from this study th
e researcher has two research questions. Namely :

1. What are the impact of using ELSA application as learning media in improving pronu
nciation skills.
2. How does effectiveness ELSA application can help students in improving pronunciati
on skills.

This research is expected to answer research questions. This is important to do considering th

e results will affect the practice of learning pronunciation.
LITERATURE REVIEW
English is a tool of human communication when it comes to talking to people of different cou
ntries in the world. There are many ways of learning to enhance the ability to speak English b
y increasing the number of vocabulary, expression of English, learning grammar, up to practi
ce it. Another factor that can support the arrival of the message well is how to pronounce eac
h word of English correctly. (Ahmad,2019) In learning English, pronouncation is one of the
most important basic skills in developing oral, listening and speaking language skills. Pronun
ciation is one of the most important skills in English language teaching. Pronunciation is not
only as the part of English subject in the class, but it can also influence student’s speaking per
formance. (Rismawati et al.,2021)
In the era of the industrial revolution 4.0, technology has become an extraordinary developme
nt, especially in the industrial sector.
In improving the quality of human resources to welcome the industrial era 4.0 then the world
of IT needs to be introduced from basic education to higher education.( Sidabutar,2021)
Therefore, education in the 4.0 era naturally supports students to learn independently by utiliz
ing various media sources. One of the media sources that can be utilized in this era is the use
of applications that are easily accessed using mobile phones or computers. According to Jogi
yanto (1999:12), the application is used in acomputer, instructions (instructions) or statement
s (statements) are prepared in such a way that the computer can process the input to be output.

Elsa is an application that can be used to develop students' speaking skills, especially in the pr
onunciation aspect. ELSA Speak application is one of the media that can support era 4.0 educ
ation. ( Samad &Ismail,2020). In this case, the ELSA application is used as a medium. Med
ium got defined as an intermediary or introduction to the occurrence of communicationfrom s
ender to receiver. (Heinich, 2002).
The various impacts of using the ELSA application as a learning medium are:
1. Students can do learning easily and efficiently.
2. Students can find learning material easily and according to the wishes of students.
3. Students can keep up with rapidly developing technological developments.
In the previous study, the researcher discussed the application of ELSA as a supporting medi
um in developing students' pronunciation abilities. (Samad &Ismail,2020)
Researchers are more focused on developing applications in students' pronouncation skills. I
n contrast to the research that will be conducted by researchers, where researchers focus more
on the effectiveness of using the ELSA application in developing students' pronunciation skill
s. It aims to answer research question how effective is the use of the ELSA application in dev
eloping pronunciation skills in students. This research is expected to have theoretical and pra
ctical significance. Theoretically, this has a valuable impact on teachers related to the media u
sed in teaching and learning process. From this study, researchers expect research conducted
can help students in the process learn through the ELSA application so that it can improve stu
dents' pronunciation ability. Besides that students are expected to learn independent. For rese
archers, this research is expected a good way to help students improve their speaking skills, e
specially in the pronunciation aspect.

METHODOLOGY
Research Design
This study uses a quantitative method with an experimental design. According to Sugiono (20
17: 74) Experimental research is a study in which the researcher deliberately produces an eve
nt, simply the researcher makes a pre-experimental with one group pre-test and post-test desi
gn. The pre-test was given before treatment, so the results found were more accurate because
there was a comparison between before and after.
Following are the details of this research design:
01 : Pre-test value (before being given treatment)
02 : Post-test score (after being given treatment)
X : Medication

Population
The population of this research is the student of SMA N 2 MANDOR. Meanwhile the sam
ple is the 10th grade student with total 30 students was selected using random sampling techni
que. The consideration is that the students were programming the pronunciation subject at th
at time.

Research instrument
This study uses several research instruments, namely observation, tests and documentation. In
the first stage the researcher made observations, after this stage the researcher entered the test
stage to obtain data on student’s abilities before giving treatment. After that the researcher ent
ered the stage of giving treatment to students. After finishing the researcher entered the secon
d testing phase to obtain data on student’s abilities after being given treatment. During the res
earch process, researchers also took some documentation as evidence of the research conduct
ed. After all stages are completed, the researcher will draw conclusions from the research that
has been done.
