III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activity
• Prayer
Good afternoon class, please stand up first for the opening (The chosen student will lead the prayer and the whole
prayer. class will stand to recite the prayer)
(The teacher will call a student to lead the opening prayer) - In the name of the father and of the son and of the
holy spirit.... AMEN.
• Classroom Arrangement
Before you take your sit, can you please put the dirt that
you see in your area and arrange properly your chairs. (Students will pick up the dirt and arrange the chairs)
After that you can take your sit.
• Greetings
Again, Good Afternoon Class! Good Afternoon Sir!
• Checking of Attendance
Is there absentees for today? None sir
Okay, that’s good
• Review
So before we jump on to our new topic for today, let’s
have a quick review about the lesson that we encountered
and discussed last meeting.

What was our topic last meeting? Our topic last meeting is about Prime numbers and
Composition numbers

Okay, so what is the difference between Prime numbers Prime numbers has 2 factors only, it is 1 and the
and Composition Numbers? number itself. While Composition Numbers has more
than 2 factors.

Very well said, in 1 to 10, can you name the prime and Example: Prime numbers – 2, 3, 5, 7
composition numbers (call a student). Composition Numbers – 4, 6, 8 , 9, 10
Very Good, that’s correct.

How about Divisibility Rules? What it is? (call a student) Rules that apply to a number to check whether the
given number is divisible by particular number or not.
Exactly, so anyone who can give at least one Divisibility The number is divisible by 2 if given number is even.
Rule? (Call a student)

Very Good, I hope you also know the other Divisibility

Rules.

B. Motivation
To begin our topic for today, I have here a word problem.
(The teacher will paste the word problem on the board).

So, can we please read the problem together? Yes sir

Okay, let’s read it together.

“ Alvin has 12 guavas and Elorde has 18 guavas. Each of

them will share the guavas to their friends. What is the (The students will read the word problem together)
greatest number of guavas each of their friends get, if Alvin
and Elorde will give the same number of guavas? “

Okay thank you,

So in your opinion or prediction, What is the greatest
number of guavas each of their friends get, if Alvin and (The students give their opinion or prediction)
Elorde will give the same number of guavas?

Thank you for your opinions and predictions.

Now, let’s find out if your opinions and predictions are
correct by the help of the 3 methods in finding GCF.

C. Lesson Proper
Let’s first know the meaning of GCF
(The teacher will paste the definition of GCF on the board)
GCF is stands for “Greatest Common Factor”.
Name of student can you please read the meaning of GCF?
The “Greatest Common Factor (GCF)” is the largest of the (The chosen student will read the meaning of GCF)
common factors of two or more numbers.

Okay thank you name of student.

In other words, it is the largest factor that the given
numbers both have.

Now, let’s solve the problem earlier by help of the

methods in finding the GCF. We have 3 methods, and the
first one is,
Listing Method
We just need to list all factors of the given numbers
(The teacher will paste the steps of the Listing Method and
call a student to read it) (The chosen student will read the steps of the Listing
• List all the factors of each given number, and Method)
• Find the common factors.
• Identify the GCF.

Thank you name of student.

Let’s try this to the given numbers in the problem we read
earlier, we have 12 and 18.
Before that, which of the two is a prime number and a They are both composite numbers
composite number?

Very good, So it means they both have more than two

factors.

Anyone can give the factors of 12? The factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12
Very good, how about the factors of 18? Anyone? The factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 18

Correct so now, what are the common factors of these two The common factors of 12 and 18 are 1, 2, 3 and 6
numbers? (call a student to answer)

Exactly, so now, (name of student) can you identify the The GCF of 12 and 18 is 6.
GCF of 12 and 18?
Nice, that’s absolutely correct (name of student)
So 6 is the greatest number of guavas that Alvin and Elorde
can give each of their friends.

Did you gets the listing method? Yes sir

Okay good, so now let’s proceed to second method.

Prime Factorization
It means to represent that given number as a product of
prime numbers, it also called “ Factor Trees “
(The teacher will paste the steps of the Prime Factorization
and call a student to read it)
• Factor out the number until the prime factor is
obtained, and (The chosen student will read the steps of the Prime
• Get the common prime factors of the given numbers. Factorization)
• Then, multiply it to get the GCF

Thank you name of student.

Let’s apply this to the given numbers in the problem we
read earlier, we have 12 and 18.

Who can give the prime factors of 12 and 18? The prime factors of 12 are : 2 × 2 × 3
Very good, so we have : The prime factors of 18 are : 2 × 3 × 3
12 18

2 6 2 9

2 3 3 3
That is,
12 = 2 × 2 × 3
18 = 2 × 3 × 3
As you can see, what are the common prime factors of 12 The common factors of 12 and 18 are 2 and 3.
and 18?
Correct,
Common prime factors : 2 × 3 = 6
Therefore , the GCF of 12 and 18 is 6. The result is same
from the listing method.
Did you understand the prime Factorization?

Okay, now we will use the Division Method

In other books it’s called “Continues Division or Ladder
Method“
(The teacher will paste the concept of the Division Method
and he will read it)
• We will continue dividing the given numbers by a
common prime numbers until the quotient are (The chosen student will read the steps of the Division
relatively prime. Method)
• And to get the GCF, we need to multiply the divisors.

Let’s try this to the given numbers in the problem we read

earlier. We have 12 and 18.

If you notice 12 and 18 are even numbers. Based on the

first Divisibility Rule if the number is even number, it is
automatically divisible by _? 2

Okay correct, it is both divisible by 2, therefore :

2 12 18
6 9
So, we got the quotients 6 and 9, what do you think is the 3
common prime number that is divisible by 6 and 9?
Okay, we have the 3.
2 12 18
3 6 9
2 3
As you can see, the quotients 2 and 3 are already relatively
prime numbers. So now, we need to multiply the divisors
to get the GCF.
Divisors : 2 × 3 = 6
Like from the first two methods, by division method the
GCF of 12 and 18 is 6.

Did you gets the Division Method? Yes sir

Very good.

So now, for additional information, there’s another way in

finding the GCF.
It’s called Euclidean Algorithm, it is applicable in finding
the GCF of big numbers.
(The teacher will paste and read the visual for the steps in
performing the method Euclidean Algorithm)

Step 1: Divide the bigger number by the smaller. If there is

no remainder then the divisor (smaller number) is the GCF.
If there is a remainder proceed to step 2. (The chosen student will read the steps of the Euclidean
Step 2: Divide the smaller number by the remainder. If Algorithm)
there is no remainder then the divisor is the GCF. If there is
a remainder, repeat the process.
(The teacher will example and a brief explanation about
Euclidean Algorithm)

So that’s is all about Euclidean Algorithm, and for now, I’m

letting you to find out if this method is applicable in three
or more numbers by doing some examples.

But for now, we will just focus in listing method, prime

factorization and division method. You need to master it.

It is clear? Yes sir

Okay good.
D. Enrichment
Group Activity : Find Me!
(The teacher will divide the class into 3 groups)

Direction : Find the GCF of 16, 24 and 32

Group 1 – use the Listing Method
Group 2 – use the Prime Factorization
Group 3 – use the Division Method

I will give you 5 minutes to do that, and after 5 minutes we

will check your works if you get the correct answers.
It’s is clear? Yes sir
Okay, you may now start. (The groups will do their task)
Answers :
Group 1 – Listing method
16 = 1, 2, 4, 8, 16
24 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24
32 = 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32
Common Factors 1, 2, 4, 8
GCF = 8

Group 2 – Prime Factorization

16 24 32

2 8 2 12 2 16

2 4 2 6 2 8

2 2 2 3 2 4
Common Prime Factors : 2 × 2 × 2 = 8
GCF = 8

Group 3 – Divisible Method

2 16 24 32
2 8 12 16
2 4 6 8
2 3 4
Divisors : 2 × 2 × 2 = 8
GCF : 8
(After five minutes, the whole class will check each group’s (Checking the work of each group)
work)

Very good, your answers are all correct.

Let’s give a round of applause to everyone for your job well (Everyone applauded)
done.
E. Abstraction
Okay, again what is GCF? The GCF is stands for “Greatest Common Factor” it is
the largest of the common factors of two or more
numbers.

And what is the 3 Methods in finding GCF, can you give one Listing Method, Prime Factorization and Division
(call a 3 students to give the 3 methods) Method
Okay very good,

So now my question is, why is it important that we have It’s important that we have knowledge about GCF
knowledge about GCF, and know how to find it? (call a because it will help our some real life problem, and it’s
student) probably helpful for our next lessons.

Good answer, it is really applicable in solving some real life

problem.

IV. Evaluation
Find the GCF of the following, using the three methods : Listing Method, Prime Factorization and Division
Method.
1. 36 and 42 2. 16 and 56

V. Assignment
Read and solve the problem and write your answers in your notebook.
