Lab Report

The document summarizes an experiment on classes of chemical reactions. It describes several chemical reactions performed, including the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by iron (III) chloride. Based on the reactivities of gold, hydrogen, zinc, and tin in single replacement reactions, the elements are ordered from least reactive to most reactive as: gold < hydrogen < tin < zinc. Precipitates formed are identified as silver chloride. Redox reactions are identified as those where oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously, with one reactant acting as a reducing agent and another as an oxidizing agent.

Experiment No. 1
Classes of Chemical Reactions

Name: Zoe Aiane Formoso Section:PT 1-4 Class No.

Group No.6 Date Submitted: 11/02/2023

1. What type of product was formed in A.2 based on the color of the litmus paper?

Based on the experiment conducted Magnesium is a silvery white metal that utilizes atmospheric oxygen to form
magnesium oxide. Magnesium oxide changes the coulorr of the red litmus paper to blue, hence showing that
magnesium oxide is basic in nature. The formation of magnesium oxide directly combines the two elements magnesium
and oxygen, yet magnesium oxide is entirely different from the reactants magnesium aand oxygen. In conclusion the
change made was a chemical change.

2. What is the role of FeCl3 in the decomposition of H2O2?

FeCl3 is the main catalyst in the decomposition of H2O2 because it did not break down within it’s the reaction
itself.

3. The following single replacement reactions are performed with their results below. Determine
the relative activities of the two elements involved in each reaction. Then arrange the following
elements: gold, hydrogen, zinc, and tin in order of increasing activity.

Sn + HCl ➔ H2 + SnCl2

Au + Sn(NO3)2 ➔ No reaction

Au + HCl ➔ No reaction

Zn + Sn(NO3)2 ➔ Zn(NO3)2 + Sn

Answer: gold <hydrogen <tin <zinc

4. Use your answers in the previous question to write the products for the reactions below.
Write “No Reaction” when applicable.

Sn + Zn(NO3)2 ➔ No reaction

Zn + Au(NO3)3 ➔ Zn(No3) + Sn

5. Which of the products in Part D are the precipitates? Write their formula below:

Answer: Formula: Ag + Cl AgCl

6. How will you identify if a chemical reaction is a redox reaction?

A redox reaction occurs when oxidation and rreduction take place ni the same reaction. This happens when one subject
acts as the reducing agent and another subject is oxidizing it resulting in reduction.
