There are times when we do not
easily understand the ideas
presented to us. However, with the
help of examples and explanations,
things become clearer and we learn
something new.
The Filipino people are very fond of festivals and
celebrations.
This statement expresses a big idea which
presents a topic that still needs additional or
supporting information. It covers a broad aspect
or characteristic of the Filipinos that has to be
explained more with details so that the reader
can fully understand it. This is an example of a
GENERAL STATEMENT.
They provide explanations,
illustrations, descriptions and
evidences by citing examples
which prove that Filipino people
love or enjoy festivals. These are
called SPECIFIC STATEMENTS.
Read and analyze the given

1. Fruits provide the nutrients you need to be
healthy. Is this a general statement?
2. Mangoes are rich in Vitamins A, E, and C;
also, they are high in fiber and contain folate,
iron, and zinc. Is this a specific statement?
3. School buildings and facilities serve
different purposes. Is this a general
statement?
4. The library is a place where we can study and
borrow books. Is this a specific statement?
5. Most ethnic groups in the Philippines choose
to preserve their culture. Is this a specific
statement?
6. The Igorots, who live in the Cordillera region of
Luzon, kept their traditional religion and way of
life. Is this a general statement?

can destroy even the biggest buildings.
10. Natural disasters cause harm to
properties and even to humans.

There are many habits that we can
do in order to keep our body safe
from various diseases. Washing
our hands regularly keeps the
germs and bad bacteria from
spoiling the food that we eat.
Eating colorful fruits and leafy
greens boosts our immune system.
Exercising regularly strengthens our
bones and muscles. Doing these
activities frequently keeps our body
strong and healthy and away from
various kinds of diseases.

group of ideas and it needs
supporting statements in order to
fully understand it. General
Statements are commonly the topic
sentence of a paragraph. It tells us
what the passage is mostly about.
Specific Statements, on the
other hand, are the supporting
statements for the topic
sentence. It provides definite
information to support the topic
sentence.
Categorize the following
statements as to whether it is a
general statement or a specific
statement. Write it in its

1. Our province is known for its
coconut plantations and rice farms.
2. Lucban Longganisa is a pork
sausage originated in Lucban,
Quezon that has a distinctive taste
of garlic and oregano.
3. Buko pie, a Filipino-style coconut
pie made of fresh and creamy
coconut filling wrapped in flaky
crust, is a favorite pasalubong item
commonly bought from the
province of Laguna.
