8 Most In-Demand Programming Languages for

2023: Results from Last 14-Month Job Listings
Analysis
DevJobsScanner analyzed over 12 million developer job requirements in the past 14
months (from October 2021 to November 2022) and selected job opportunities that
explicitly required programming languages to identify the eight most popular
programming languages for 2022.

Overview:

181 2
Here is a break down of each of the top eight languages in demand on the market are:

1. Javascript/Typescript
JavaScript has been popular since its creation. Currently, JavaScript remains the most
in-demand programming language on the entire market; the arrival of TypeScript may
also contribute to the achievement of this milestone. TypeScript’s popularity has risen
in recent years. Many new JavaScript frameworks are entirely written in TypeScript,
such as Angular or NestJS.

From October 2021 to November 2022 (14 months), DevJobsScanner identified 801,000
job opportunities, representing about 31% of jobs with explicit programming language
requirements.

Jobs found: 801K (approx. 31%)

Keywords: javascript, typescript, react, angular, vue, node.

2. Python
In 2022, Python will be the second most in-demand programming language.
DevJobsScanner states that its versatility, from scripting to running servers to data
analysis, has been key in achieving this milestone. Additionally, Python has the largest
community of any programming language.

In these 14 months, researchers identified 51.5K job opportunities, representing 20%.

Jobs found: 515K (approx. 20%)

Keywords: python, django, flask.

3. Java
Java is the third most in-demand programming language, having been popular since its
creation in 1995. While its popularity has declined somewhat in the past few years with
the emergence of more modern languages such as Kotlin, it remains among the top
three. Currently, many well-known companies are using frameworks such as Spring,
which also helps to maintain Java’s position.

Jobs found: 443K (approx. 17%)

Keywords: java, spring.

4. C#
C# is a general-purpose, multi-paradigm, object-oriented programming language
created to address some of the weaknesses of C++. As a general-purpose language, C#
has a wide range of use cases. The most common use for C# is in the .NET framework. It
is also heavily used for scripting in the Unity game engine framework. The .NET
framework and Unity are popular in top companies.
Jobs found: 305K (approx. 12%)

Keywords: c#, .net.

5. PHP
PHP, which was created 27 years ago, is still the fifth most in-demand programming
language. In these 14 months, researchers identified 226K related job opportunities,
representing about 10%.

Jobs found: 226K (~9%)

Keywords: php, laravel, wordpress.

6. c++
C has been around for 50 years since its first release and C++ for 37 years since its
creation, originally named “C with Classes”. Over this long time window, C/C++ has
maintained its popularity through periodic updates and improvements to the language.
Modern C++ includes object-oriented, generic, and other features and has widespread
use in industries. C++ can be found in many places, such as video games, servers,
databases, and even space probes.
Jobs found: 213K (~8%)

Keywords: c, c++.

7. Ruby
Ruby ranks seventh with 12.5K jobs (about 5% of total job demand). Its most popular
use is in combination with the web framework Ruby on Rails. Although there are not
many people ranked in the top seven, Ruby is currently used in some large technology
companies such as Twitter, Crunchbase, or Github.

Jobs found: 125K (approx. 5%)

Keyword: Ruby

8. Go
Go is a young language created by Google 12 years ago. Google designed Go to
improve programming efficiency in the era of multi-core, networked machines, and
large codebases. As shown in the chart below, Go’s popularity is slowly growing, and
DevJobsScanner predicts that the language may enter the top five by 2023. Uber,
Twitch, and other companies are using Go.
Jobs found: 53K (approx. 2%)

Keyword: go

Summary
DevJobsScanner notes that it is clear that Javascript and Typescript do dominate the
market for developer employment. In jobs with explicit programming language
requirements, Javascript and Typescript make up 31%, meaning nearly a third of jobs
require Javascript or Typescript.

Python and Java are the second and third most in-demand programming languages in
2022, providing a large number of job opportunities. It is worth noting, however, that
Java is closing the gap with Python. In the survey, the number of Java jobs exceeded
Python within a few months.

Therefore, those who consider Java an outdated programming language may need to
rethink their language. C#, C/C++, and PHP are also notable languages because they
have a sustained upward trend.

For example, in October 2021, PHP demand was only around 5% of total demand, but by
November 2022, this figure had almost doubled to around 10%.
