PH141, General Physics I (2023 Spring)

l Subject Code/Name: PH141, General Physics I (three credits/semester)

l Main Textbook:
Essential University Physics by Richard Wolfson (Pearson Addison Wesley, 4th ed.)

l Auxiliary Textbook:
Physics (7th ed.) by Giancoli (Pearson): previous textbook for Basic Physics course
University Physics (14th ed.) by Young & Freedman (Addison-Wesley)
Physics for Scientists and Engineers (4th ed.) by Randall D. Knight (Addison-Wesley)

l Composition of this Lecture:

- Regular lecture by a professor in an on-site classroom or a real-time online class (Zoom) depending on
the COVID situation – mandatory for all students:
3 hours per week. It is held in English.
- Recitation class by teaching assistants (TAs), onsite or online depending on the COVID situation –
mandatory for all students:
Every Tuesday either PM 7:00 ~ PM 8:00 or PM 9:00 ~ PM 10:00. (English or Korean)
- Quizzes – mandatory for all students: Tuesday PM 8:15 ~ PM 8:45 every two weeks

l Evaluation Criteria: (the followings may change)

- Midterm & Final exam.: 35 % each
- Recitation class: 20 % (Quiz 15% +Recitation class attendance 5%)
- Attendance: 10 %
* Students absent more than 1/3 of total class attendance are entitled to F grade.
- Evaluation in a letter grade (A~F) only with on-site midterm and final exams. Otherwise, evaluation in
S/U grade with a take-home exam. It depends on the COVID situation.

l Summary of Lecture:
- Physics is the fundamental science, governing the entire universe only with few basic principles. In this
class, we will learn about those basic principles using calculus-based techniques, to help students build
the analytical and quantitative skills and confidence needed to apply physics in problem-solving for
science and engineering. During the course, you will see the relevance and excitement of the physics
you're studying with wide-ranging and contemporary applications in science, technology, and everyday
life.
- In the 1st semester, the topics covered will be Mechanics, Oscillations, Waves, Fluids, and
Thermodynamics. (In the 2nd semester, general physics II, you will learn about Electromagnetism,
Optics, and Modern physics including relativity, quantum mechanics, and current issues in physics)
