History

Clark C. Abt is credited for coining

the term "serious games" in the
1970s, defined as games that have
an "explicit and carefully thought-
out educational purpose and are
not intended to be played primarily
for amusement." Abt also
recognized that this "does not mean
that serious games are not, or
should not be, entertaining."
1....What are serious games?
Initially, serious games

where considered to
be games with a purpose. The basic idea
behind serious games is to hide important
and time-consuming tasks behind a gaming
veil. Serious gaming is used in various areas
such as education, healthcare, marketing
and other businesses and industries.

3...Where are serious games used?

Education:
This is one of the most well-
known applications of serious
games, also known as
educational games.

/ 03
Healthcare:

Games are also used in

rehabilitation by translating
exercises to actions in the
game. Another use in
healthcare is to train medical
procedures in a simulated
environment.

/ 04
Sustainability projects:
make people engaged for sustainability project or change their behaviour.

Example: Water Battle

Training and consultancy:
Games like America's Army are training
simulations that are used in the training and
recruitment of soldiers. The games try to represent
warfare as realistically as possible in order to
familiarize users with the dangers, strategies,
weapons, tactics and vehicles.

/ 07
Simulation or serious game: which
one do you choose?

A simulator can be very expensive to

purchase.
Often a simulation can only be played at a
fixed location.
Limited mobility makes it less accessible.
A simulation is less motivating than a
serious game.

/ 08
CONDITIONS WE HAVE TO APPLY

A safe space to experiment:

Higher engagement and immersion

Positive emotions
improve learning

/ 09
What are the advantages of serious
games?

transfer knowledge;
teach skills
create awareness
change behaviour;
increase motivation.
Disadvantages of serious games:

The translation of the learning goal into a

metaphor and a fun and interesting story
becomes a challenge in an attempt to
reproduce real situations.
Because a serious game is often a
simplified representation to make the
game more accessible and fun, the level of
realism is often compromised.

/ 09
“It’s just a game. People don’t take games
seriously”

“Serious games are less effective than traditional

methods”.

“Games are addictive”

/ 10
The power of serious games is that they are
entertaining, engaging and immersive. Serious
games combine learning strategies, knowledge
and structures, and game elements to teach
specific skills, knowledge and attitudes.
